- Artea, on 08/20/2008, -27/+89It's that time yet again!
http://www.*****.com/ - twodollars, on 08/20/2008, -4/+38***** this thread, im going to the Bahamas.
- jaybol, on 08/20/2008, -8/+42from a comment by http://digg.com/users/fudged71 on another xkcd submission (this merits a cut and paste so everyone can see it):
teleportation? lets talk about levitation! They clearly swap places, hovering above those chairs! :P
I really enjoyed this one, being both a Trek fan, and someone who has studied the implications of quantum teleportation, and the physics behind it. The situation described int he panel reminds me of Garrett Lisi ("the SURFER physicist!") and all the hype that went into his theory of everything, or rather the hype about everything OTHER than the science involved, and more about the details of his 'peculiar' social life. In fact, his theory by itself was quite magnificent!
Because my submission has a snowball's chance in hell of reaching the front page using shouts and the "incredible" recommendation engine (or being a jackass with several accounts), I have little choice but to link to it here. I can assure you that it is related to xkcd, not xkcd, and also something that you have most likely never seen before. It is relevant to xkcd, so I hope that I will not get flamed for "spam," but this is really a last resort sort of thing, since not enough people interested would be able to see it for it to become popular, otherwise. I hate spam as much as any of you. *winces* sorry. http://digg.com/comics_animation/Explaining_Greatn ... - buddyw, on 08/20/2008, -3/+24http://www.*****.com
This should save everyone some time. - DeathJux, on 08/20/2008, -4/+21I laughed until I saw the feed... they haven't all been *****, but today's certainly wasn't very good.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -2/+16One of the first times I have disagreed. This one was hilarious.
I guess they just didn't get the references behind it... - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -3/+15I'll help you out, but there are a bunch of references, so it is a bit complicated. An experiment was done with quantum teleportation, and the reporter is excited until the scientist tells him that it's not like Star Trek teleportation, and that the phrase "quantum teleportation" is misleading, since no real teleportation is involved. But there is real teleportation, bu he didn't mention it because they were talking about "quantum teleportation". That is the short version.
The alt-text is in reference to a REALLY creepy and old russian video (according to a guy in the xkcd forum), which is apparently real: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSrIkUXwsNk (Do not watch this if you are squirmish about animal cruelty, or DOG ZOMBIES, or if you haven't watched Mars Attacks and got at least a decent chuckle). - NeoCortex, on 08/20/2008, -2/+14Being a physicist, I actually find this pretty funny. I've had the exact same gripe about media reports on some science experiments.
- spammishking, on 08/20/2008, -0/+11My bad, now that I examine it closer I see the humor. You're trying too hard
- transmothra, on 08/20/2008, -3/+13Quantum teleportation means, in a seriously tiny nutshell, that a particle X can be recreated in another place. So if Kirk got into a quantum teleporter, he himself would not appear at the other end, only an exact copy, duplicated down to the state of individual particles. Theoretically, the copy could even be thinking the same thoughts as the original. But it's not the original that makes the journey, just a copy. And it can't actually be done with anything large at this point.
Not to mention that the particles to be duplicated must ALSO exist at the destination site, ready for assembly. (Note: not RE-assembly, just regular old assembly.)
Regular Star Trek transporters are no better than magic, because they do not exist at all in the real world we live in. In those, the original is teleported to its destination, not a fake.
Hence, the disappointment, and the irony at the end. - db0255, on 08/20/2008, -7/+17OK, so I appreciate that this gets to the front page all the time because now whenever I read xkcd and don't get it (i.e. all the time), I can just come here and read a comment that explains it.
So anyone care to help? - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+9@Jesse If I brought this specific comic panel up to a random person on the street, they WOULD NOT understand it. More than anything, I would say xkcd is centered mainly around wikipedia life. If you don't understand a reference, you look it up, grok it, look back at the comic, and laugh. A lot of the topics that are covered in xkcd are so advanced beyond the level of the comprehension of the average person, that it takes a long time to explain it to somebody who just "doesn't get it." You boost your scientific comprehension with a bunch of the panels.
also, great job trolling. It is something that I understand, speaking as the king of ***** france. If you don't find xkcd funny, then you are probably a terrible physicist AND science write. To each their ***** own, I guess. - exscape, on 08/20/2008, -1/+9Agree, best one in a while. Perhaps because I too am tired of all the new articles stating "ZOMG QUANTUM TELEPORTATION!" with no new facts.
- amibatman, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8BURN!!!!!!!!
- jaybol, on 08/20/2008, -8/+14can you do that another time? i don't like being buried.
- ryansimbalist, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7Yes, their called Digg users.
- hwy9nightkid, on 08/20/2008, -2/+7That's why I ***** loved the movie "The Prestige"
- tech42er, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5But for the last few months, every single strip has been dugg.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4It's ok. We forgive you.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+4Stop complaining, OK.
Or use http://crowdnews.eu instead. OK! - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+4that's strange... I looked at your username... and....
LOL. Sorry, i'm just not that surprised - diggymow, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3I think for myself, but thanks anyway.
- tech42er, on 08/20/2008, -1/+4That's the theory, of course. The actual "quantum teleportation" experiments that are currently being done (and that xkcd is referencing) involve only a particle or two.
- tech42er, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3The experiments were legit, but I believe the footage is faked/propaganda. Damn Interesting has more information: http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=930
- assbeard, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3The episode where Will Riker's copy (thomas riker) was found on that moon almost implies that this is exactly what happens in the star trek type of teleportation.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -3/+5The internet, Brian.
I can find ANYTHING on the internet.
Brian. - h4mx0r, on 08/20/2008, -2/+4would the clones theoretically continue to think the same way beyond the same thought?
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -3/+5no. The paths of their existances are effectively different from then on. The initial starting point is the same, but even BEING in a different place is going to make you "think different"
heh. apple. - BruceBogtrotter, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3But....vacuum cleaners rock!
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3newsfully is correct.
spelling is not a "matter of opinion." Stop burying him - saxmanlarry, on 08/21/2008, -0/+2As a physics student who specializes in quantum implications, I need to chime in. There is a lot of misinformation here. As presented in the (incredibly funny) comic, quantum teleportation is a terrible name. It is merely a statistical influence between space-like separated particles. It is not at all the teleportation of matter or energy, but rather a superluminal transmission of quantum information. At no point is something here, then there. Simply, their states are correlated. If interested, skim these articles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_inequality
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epr_paradox
While not Star Trek style teleportation, if you take the time to understand what these articles are saying, it will shake your world and understanding of reality beyond anything you've ever known.
The implications of Bell-type correlations force the universe to be non-local, and once you can understand how significant this is, you'll only want to keep reading. Suggestions for some accessible works:
Herbert -- "Quantum Reality"
Albert -- "Quantum Mechanics and Experience"
JS Bell's "Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics" is by far the best text on the subject, but it is relatively rare, expensive, and not best for the beginner/nonscientist. Many of his papers, however, are fantastically accessible, so it is something for the curious to read.
In addition, I've written quite a few papers on the topics designed to provide accessible introductions to the topics. Ask questions. In this vein, you'll find that the physics community is ignoring real questions about this stuff. They've stopped thinking long ago in favor of a strict empiricism. Only a few researchers remain asking the real fundamental questions. - johnnyboy239, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3I actually liked this one
- gochuupsuh, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1Your explanation didn't help at all.
- ZenKai, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1@exscape :
It's pretty safe to assume ANYTHING that starts with "ZOMG" is gonna bite. - buddyw, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1PJD: My effort limit for a recursive url joke is $15 and 15 min.
- johnnyboy239, on 08/20/2008, -2/+3actually, quantum teleportation does not yet entail what you are talking about. Quantum teleportation is merely the statement that an atom can disappear somewhere and reappear somewhere else.
it's really just stating the obvious implications of quantum physics and the uncertainty theory.
I'm fairly sure they've already done quantum teleportations but far too lazy to go find the source at the moment. - newsfully, on 08/20/2008, -5/+6Noone is not a ***** word
- dontlookleft, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1that's because people have some growing need to be the first to have something dugg under their name. honestly, i NEVER look at who dugg an article. i honestly dont care, as long as i'm getting the interesting articles posted continuously.
- twodollars, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1I miss Perry Bible Fellowship :-(
- Zyrix, on 08/20/2008, -1/+2***** you, two of my friends died trying to grow a brain!
- atonalpanic, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1"Balance the Equation" - Some episode of outer limits
I feel sorry for the guy being quantum "teleported", from his standpoint all they are doing is killing him. Ain't that a bitch. - Enigmocracy, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1...
- tweedius, on 08/20/2008, -2/+3Ok, that actually looks cool and until I highlighted it, I actually wondered how you did it.
- mufffin, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1yeah, you're trying too hard, tom.
- dontlookleft, on 08/20/2008, -2/+3I love all the negative diggs for having an opinion on the comic. *claps* But I think the wrong comic strips from that site get dugg. The ones that do get dugg usually aren't that funny.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+2@Jesse I enjoyed your comment, and am going to promptly print it, frame it, and put it inside my spaceship
- diggmaddy, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1http://www.*****.com/rss.xml
Anyone over here knows when was the last time this website showed NO? - funkytaco, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1The reporter was disappointed by the new scientific "whatever" was, like, y'know not that teleportation thingy, so he was like "pffft you bore me 'n stuff reporter guy, I'm like all science and you're all hollywood! i'ma do my nails" and he "fun! teleports" because he has a teleporter thingy that can do the "boring teleporter thingy" and the "fun teleporter thingy" and the knob is on the fun one so he disappears like in movies and how the reporter thought quantum teleportation worked.
How's that? - Jesse, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1"If you don't find XKCD funny you're probably a terrible physicist AND science writer(sp?)."
Holy ***** that's funny. I'm putting that quote on the wall in my office. That perfectly sums up why people think they enjoy XKCD: *sniff sniff* I can be smart too guys! I laughed too, see?!?! *sniff* - PleaseJustDie, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1It needs to have some archive, what If I want to see if last monday's was ***** or last friday's cause I missed it and don't want to waste my time reading it if it was *****?
