- Vorin, on 01/29/2008, -3/+312Four out of five geeks agree; xkcd puns are at least five times as effective as your next leading brand.
- Hayaemsay, on 01/29/2008, -9/+164I'd never find the latest XKCD if it wasn't for Digg...
- CAPITALLETTERS, on 01/29/2008, -14/+127Epoch win!
- Tiak, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1065th geek accidentally divided by zero when attempting to compare pun effectiveness.
- Akaji, on 01/29/2008, -1/+87Time, on UNIX systems, is based on the number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970. While, technically, you could write a program to use negative time values, you wouldn't expect that to be necessary, so you program it in such a way that utilizes positive values only (such as defining datatypes with 'unsigned' before it; this allows the upper bound to be twice as high).
- JohnA, on 01/29/2008, -9/+91Lord, the best XKCD ever. And anyone over the age of 38 is a n00b.
- c0ldfusi0n, on 01/29/2008, -1/+78I actually came here to be able to share my laughter with people who'd understand the joke. Seriously no one I know would get that. That makes me sad inside. But that aside, that's a ***** good one.
- Aharoni, on 01/29/2008, -16/+90I didn't get it and a part of me is glad about it.
- Tiak, on 01/29/2008, -1/+59The url is just so damn hard to remember!
- fuzzmeister, on 01/29/2008, -0/+49I beg to differ:
http://xkcd.com/149/ - Hamsterpotpies, on 01/29/2008, -3/+50Ah, the joy of unix time stamps.
- Thuktun, on 01/29/2008, -1/+48Hint: the part about the code crashing wasn't the funny part.
- opensourcemaven, on 01/29/2008, -3/+49This beats my "Camping is in-tents" shirt hands down.
- kss42, on 01/29/2008, -0/+45This comic is about a different kind of epoch. In geology, an epoch is a unit of time between a period and an age. In computing, it refers to the reference time or "time zero" from which a computer counts off the seconds. The Unix epoch is midnight UTC on Jan. 1, 1970, meaning Unix machines measure time as the number of seconds elapsed since that moment. Stickman One's code is crashing when given negative (pre-epoch) times, and Stickman Two is pointing out Stickman One's programming inadequacies with a clever pun.
- ReidFleming, on 01/29/2008, -1/+43S'OK. Ignorance is not idiocy. UNIX Time is also sometimes called 'Epoch Time':
From the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_time
"The Unix epoch is the time 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970. There is a problem with this definition, in that UTC did not exist in its current form until 1972; this issue is discussed below. For brevity, the remainder of this section will use ISO 8601 date format, in which the Unix epoch is 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z.
As a Solaris sucker, I have to deal with it all the time (I also suck for dealing with AIX and PsOS). - superal1394, on 01/29/2008, -3/+43the other part that you totally missed is 'epic' and 'epoch' sound very similar, and mocks the new internet meme of 'epic fail'
- bobcrotch, on 01/29/2008, -2/+31Ahh the joy of 85% of people who comment on Digg not understanding that but still giving you the thumbs up!
- NaziHatinChimp, on 01/29/2008, -0/+26Thank you for explaining this informatively and not going "your a n00b lolz".
- FadieZ, on 01/29/2008, -3/+29I still didn't get it.
- kss42, on 01/29/2008, -9/+35your a n00b lolz

- coit, on 01/29/2008, -0/+24I'm over 40 and I know more obsolete programming languages than you'll ever learn....
- sgtbutterscotch, on 01/29/2008, -0/+21I think he was being sarcastic.
- ripple123, on 01/29/2008, -0/+21yeah i think its something like exxkayseedee.com
- capiCrimm, on 01/29/2008, -1/+22Oh Shi --
- Vorin, on 01/29/2008, -0/+21i'd be hesitant to say best; there are many, many great ones...
but yes, with so many noobs out there, most have to be over 38. - NaziHatinChimp, on 01/29/2008, -9/+29I didn't get that. Flame away.
- bobcrotch, on 01/29/2008, -7/+27This is the part where I say "Go outside virgin" and get buried.
- Vorin, on 01/29/2008, -2/+22http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Xkcd
- Aupajo, on 01/29/2008, -0/+20Have a gold star.
- afidler, on 01/29/2008, -5/+25it's "xkcd," not "XKCD."
- TheChunt, on 01/29/2008, -0/+191. There's an ad in the damn corner of said "ad-free" mirror.
B. Where the frig are the ads on XKCD? - moxillaq, on 01/29/2008, -7/+25Because this is a link to an XKCD comic, it is inevitable that this will make the front page. I love XKCD, but it does get a little ridiculous.
- MadDoggie, on 01/29/2008, -1/+18Timesaver tip #48: Don't open the link, just look at the thumbnail!
- Haplo, on 01/29/2008, -0/+16I am almost 41 and I've little doubt that I would pwn you. I even signed up 9 days before you to digg, so go figure ;-)
- pastaq, on 01/29/2008, -1/+17+ [ ]
:) - salvadorwii, on 01/29/2008, -5/+21reminds me of 2038 bug
- Vorin, on 01/29/2008, -0/+15Plus, the fact that it's possible doesn't mean that the character's code couldn't have a bug in it. It does - hence the name of the comic.
That's the joy of programming - knowing that what you're trying to accomplish is possible, but having to overcome the obstacles that are in the way in order to make it successful. - 1awesomeguy, on 08/19/2008, -1/+16Buried for being a jerk. No offense against you personally, by the way.
- MrGency, on 01/29/2008, -0/+13Isn't there a mistake in the comic? Yeah, Unix counts time starting from 1970, but it uses a 32-bit signed integer to do so. Thus it can deal with times between 1902 and 2038, rather than from 1970 to 2106 if the integer were unsigned. I guess it could just be the stick guy's programming that's doing it.
- ripple123, on 01/29/2008, -0/+13That is such a stunning revelation.
- blademanx, on 01/29/2008, -1/+13Ahhh, the pun, it BURNS...
- Sornos, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12I'm a geek and I agree.
- thecheatah, on 01/29/2008, -0/+11Good thing the geeks ran in different processes, else we would have had 0 out 5!
- Gravix, on 01/29/2008, -4/+15Listen, I love XKCD too, but I dont need to see it on Digg whenever a new one comes out.
They come out on a schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
Its not that hard guys. - cyberpear, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10The original doesn't have ads, and additionally, xkcd can handle the digg effect.
- billbillbilly, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem
- Harbinger67, on 01/29/2008, -7/+16God XKCD can be pretentious as hell at times.
- Holosoth, on 01/29/2008, -2/+10go back to 4chan
