- Chainheart2, on 01/18/2009, -0/+191The corridor looks like something we'll see within 5 years in gaming.. I hope
- vincentml, on 01/19/2009, -1/+143Wouldn't it be awesome if this guy launched his (well-deserved) career via a Digg post?
Dugg for that prospect. - amauldin71, on 01/18/2009, -5/+133If you thought that was impressive, wait until you see the porn reel he hasn't posted yet.
- tza999, on 01/18/2009, -0/+125LOVE the robot making friends.. the happy 'HURRAY' when it throws up its arms in delight when the tower turns the light on is truly touching. In a robot sort of way.
- inactive, on 01/19/2009, -0/+90i love vimeo. crystal clear HD
- skoles, on 01/18/2009, -0/+87"Perpetuum Mobile" by Penguin Cafe
- doublefelix, on 01/17/2009, -4/+84He used: "3 main software packages for making the work, XSI for Modelling, Photoshop for texturing and 3D studio Max for rendering."
- spepin, on 01/18/2009, -1/+72Wow. This is gorgeous. The music complimented it so well. I also love his quick breakdown of it all at the end.
- n0t0kayipr0mis3, on 01/18/2009, -0/+64That's some serious skill.
- s4g4n, on 01/18/2009, -0/+61The jeep is insanely detailed from top to bottom.
- Vipersfate, on 01/18/2009, -1/+59The hallway at the end was really amazing. Looks completely real.
- TheRstar, on 01/18/2009, -1/+53What is the background music called?
- tendonut, on 01/19/2009, -2/+46Sounds like a commercial telling me to invest in Fannie Mae.
Not saying it as an insult, but this is the kind of music bank commercials use. - RussLieber, on 01/19/2009, -0/+42he probably does
- tidu, on 01/18/2009, -4/+45He did a fantastic job!!! It's amazing that this kind of thing can be rendered on (well, high-end) personal computers these days
- HotGore, on 01/18/2009, -1/+38That is pretty impressive.
- Thoku, on 01/18/2009, -1/+37Wow, beautiful. If this doesn't get on the digg reel I'll eat my hat.
- swantonamobay, on 01/19/2009, -0/+33That was the best thing I've seen on digg in months.
- RawMeat3000, on 01/19/2009, -0/+31It doesn't take a high end computer to render this kind of stuff. All you need is time.
- RadInfinitum, on 01/19/2009, -1/+25The same music, it's real high-brow porn. (...oxymoron?)
- jmcneilly, on 01/18/2009, -0/+24Oh Yeah!? What music is he going to use on that?
- Tyrghast, on 01/19/2009, -0/+23The closest we've come in looks is Crysis, and it's generally accepted as a diamond encrusted pile of ***** as games go.
When it comes to CGI videos Blizzard reigns supreme, but they use an entire office's worth of people working tirelessly for months to produce only a few minutes of footage. This reel was done by one guy. I say 'bravo' Peter Roe, you did an excellent job. - RadInfinitum, on 01/19/2009, -0/+23If it doesn't, I demand to see a video of the hat eating taking place posted on digg, and then hopefully making the following digg reel.
If that video doesn't make it to the next digg reel, I shall eat my pants. - inactive, on 01/19/2009, -0/+212.
Look at the difference between 1998 gaming, and now.
No doubt, we will have photo-realistic games in 3 years. - kaoitik, on 01/18/2009, -1/+21It's better than anything you can do.
- quomen, on 01/19/2009, -2/+22That's what she said.
- zimsters, on 01/18/2009, -4/+22are animators finding it real tough to find a job these days? seems digg is suddenly the new grounds for video showreels of animators strutting their stuff!
- inactive, on 01/19/2009, -0/+18"In a robot sort of way. "
lol - RadInfinitum, on 01/19/2009, -0/+16Personally, I blame Penguin Cafe and the like for the downfall of the economy.
- inactive, on 01/19/2009, -2/+17"All of the following work is my own."
Not the music.
Great animation, though. - retral, on 01/18/2009, -0/+14I wish I could do stuff like that.. :(
- RadInfinitum, on 01/19/2009, -2/+16MAY HE BE SMITTEN BY THE FORCES THAT BE.
- algaeturd, on 01/19/2009, -0/+14I'm sorry but that thing was incredible. To someone who has never used 3D software or whatever it was, looks like some seriously complicated and realistic work.
- PRlME, on 01/19/2009, -0/+14more like cgi nerd but stfu any how.
- spartarising, on 01/19/2009, -0/+13@buddypriefert
Its called Turok, and its terrible. - onux16, on 01/19/2009, -0/+13I saw the hallway scene and immediately thought how awesome it would be if that style and atmosphere were incorporated into an interactive experience (gaming or otherwise) Wouldn't you agree?
- chocobomog, on 01/19/2009, -1/+13It ebbs and flows, I know of over 15 recent animation graduates who got their first jobs this past month at various big studios while at the same time Disney fired a few of their animators who had been there for over 20 years. The general idea is that if you have the skills you will get the jobs. Those 20 year vets of Disney were quickly snatched up at other studios. Some studios are having big hiring pushes to finish their spring/summer animated films, while others are laying off (or more specifically "not renewing contracts") after finishing their fall/Christmas films and not having anything else ready to animate in the pipeline.
That being said, every recent animation I've seen on digg has been subpar, including this one, and the creators would not be hired as an animator. This is strictly in an animation sense though which is where the confusion comes from. If a studio is going to hire an animator, they don't care about the lighting/modeling/rendering etc the student did in their shot. I go through hundreds of animation reels every quarter and the serious ones that get the great jobs have only animation on them and rarely any of the extra non-animation "fluff" seen here. Although, those same reels wouldn't look good to non-animators (like on digg) because they would be missing the visual flourishes the us animators tend to call "fluff".
This person definitely has talent, but there is not enough in his animation to show his talent in that field, it is very rudimentary. My guess is this reel is more for visual effects and not animation, at which point it is out of my expertise to deduce his hiring potential in that field. - 8BitGaming, on 01/19/2009, -0/+11Reminds me of City 17.

http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=121 - Foliot, on 01/18/2009, -0/+10Holy *****, that is a somewhat obscure question. And yes, I have been there many times, and yes it does look like the Deltaport... But I think that shot could resemble a lot of different cargo ports from afar.
- ElTomacco, on 01/19/2009, -1/+10because we will evolve to subsist solely on well rendered animation?
- morebanter, on 01/18/2009, -1/+10simply amazing what we can create today using computers
- polypropglop, on 01/18/2009, -1/+10Damn, I wanted that jeep to transform ^.^
- explodingtree, on 01/19/2009, -0/+9Who's hungry? I made spaghetti!
- swengw, on 01/18/2009, -1/+10When that robot came out of the water...holy *****..
- Anim8ir, on 01/19/2009, -0/+8He was smart putting his best stuff first. That's standard in the industry.
- Ender008, on 01/19/2009, -1/+9If it doesn't, I demand to see a video of the pants eating taking place posted on digg, and then hopefully making the following digg reel.
If that video doesn't make it to the next digg reel, I shall eat my shoes. - brianez21, on 01/19/2009, -0/+8Hey... Half-Life came out in 1998 :)
- MakanGuru, on 01/19/2009, -0/+8I hope someone like ILK or Pixar took note of his work and give him a call. I personally thought his "Friendly Wave" was not only just an amazing piece of technical artistry, but a great little short story as well.
