When a Robot Servant Becomes Self-Aware... [COMIC]
simulatedcomicproduct.com — I loved this strip.. the happy look on the robot's face who thinks he's finally getting some real love from his master makes the whole thing so ***** tragic.

- diggmaddy, on 08/05/2008, -1/+1Oh, she cons you into hugging her and then pushes your reset button?
- Culero, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1You have to do it atleast once a month, or else she gets loaded with bloatware

- edwartica, on 08/05/2008, -14/+2You see, if they had these in the years before the Matrix, humanity wouldn't of been enslaved and we wouldn't of had to listen to Neo saying "I know Kung-fu."
- requiem3, on 08/05/2008, -1/+1You know, I don't really care that you made an idiotic statement, I can glance over that.
But buried for using "of" instead of "have".

- alex7575, on 08/05/2008, -4/+1Now, all the Terminator movies are starting to make sense to me...
- judicar, on 08/05/2008, -5/+1Apparently when a robot becomes self-aware it destroys your webserver. Also, how does one become "too" self-aware, you either are or you aren't.
- BradOFarrell, on 08/05/2008, -1/+5That's not true. The idea of 'self' is complex, there are varying aspects of it you could be aware of.
- triont, on 08/05/2008, -1/+13Dugg for something different.
- jorichter, on 08/05/2008, -3/+0Something different? There's comics daily on Digg.

- dietCoke, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1That joke's so old, the last time I heard it I walked into an antique store and said 'What's new?".
- Scriabin, on 08/05/2008, -0/+0OK then, it went down faster than a furry at a furcon.

- BradOFarrell, on 08/05/2008, -8/+0It's funny because the exact same thing happened to women.
- BossKey, on 08/05/2008, -12/+6Needs a reboot to speed up and work hard again?
That robot must be based on Windows.- PReitz, on 08/05/2008, -1/+7Actually, the robot went six months before it stopped working and needed a reboot, it must be a Mac
*ducks* - Atomic05, on 08/05/2008, -3/+3Oh ***** off already. It isn't that funny anymore.
- Myonosken, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3The site is running Linux....Maybe dragging OSs in wasn't too smart.
- PReitz, on 08/05/2008, -1/+7Actually, the robot went six months before it stopped working and needed a reboot, it must be a Mac
- socketman, on 08/05/2008, -6/+4What it doesn't show is how two of his friends already died while trying to reset their robots. Apparently along with self awareness comes self preservation.
- junkstuff1, on 08/05/2008, -2/+8Wow. I just sat down at my computer after watching the Star Trek episode where Data prevents possibly-sentient robot servants (the Exocomps) from being used as bombs to save Picard and Laforge. How timely!
- fradav4, on 08/05/2008, -1/+2WTF!!!?!?!? About 5 minutes ago I just finished watching that episode! TNG 6x09 - The Quality of Life

- Sham1969, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2SCP is one of my all-time favorite web comics. This one is pretty old, many others are even sadder and more ***** up. So if this is how you like your science fiction comics, then dive on into their archives.

- kolyana, on 08/05/2008, -7/+2This comic was posted in TWO THOUSAND AND SIX: October 5th, 2006
Seriously, are you going to go through every web comic - the previous 5 years - and post every freaking one? Are you serious? This isn't even close to being current.
It's this sort of cr*p that makes DIGG a worthless place to visit sometimes.- Postalwrker27, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3Somebody needs to hit YOUR reset button.
- dupek11, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3I think there is a lot that could be said about paradigms by this strip. On the one hand, he’s destroying the intelligence that had formed in his little house-bot by resetting it into an automaton. In another point of view, he’s keeping that intelligence from suffering in its own mindless, pointless existence in the first place. Either way it’s rather inhumane and unsettling.
Comment stolen from Sarah May 29th, 2008 at 1:50 am http://simulatedcomicproduct.com/2006/10/05/mope/# ...- mehungryman, on 08/05/2008, -1/+1Too bad if it is inhumane. It's being committed to a robot, not a human.
- leerayIG88, on 08/05/2008, -4/+1I'd try to have sex with it. Toss a wig and a dress on it....free sex all every night.
- tsp00n, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2... my god man, get a hold of yourself

- epmc, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Actually this is what happens when a robot becomes self-aware: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/63f15c55d8
- funkydude101, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1A tragic ending. The result of finding it tragic really shows how we consider conscienceness in any form, a form of life.
- SpockGuy, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1This is depressing as *****.
- rvaldes04, on 08/06/2008, -1/+1i like robots, but that was lame
- woodrail, on 08/06/2008, -0/+0heck, that was grim.
Also, speaking as an appreciator of fine comics, this is a good one. I recommend the archive. - sumgi, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1I had the same thought about all those Japanese robotic toilets that set themselves on fire, I figured they must of become self aware and killed themselves.
- TheGhostMan, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Why would i robot feel like doing something it wasn't programmed to do in the first place.
- SikkinDivigil, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1I am sad!
- paidhima, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2There was a very cool article on Digg several months ago about a polytech institute in Switzerland that was experimenting in a sort of literal neural net computer. They are trying to simulate the processes within the human brain (on a very basic level, to start) by assigning a single processor to a single neuron in a massively multi-cpu configuration. According to the article, they were able to successfully simulate the operation of a small neocortical column of about 10,000 neurons. The consensus, though perhaps very optimistic, is that given enough time they could simulate the function of the entire brain. It makes you wonder exactly how far we are from thinking machines, and the question of consciousness. Just look at how easily (and extensively) people anthropomorphize their pets. Asimov, Gibson and Stephenson don't seem so far-fetched anymore.

Incidentally, check out Second Angel by Philip Kerr for an interesting take on artificial intelligence at the level of consciousness.
