- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -2/+26very nice article :)
- jcorn1, on 01/25/2009, -0/+20Until I looked at these, I didn't realize how many had animated openings, even though the show itself featured actors, not cartoon characters. Sure brought back memories!
- AmyVernon, on 01/25/2009, -0/+13This was like a trip down memory lane. I'm old (fortunately, I saw most of these in re-runs, not first run, however.)
- digitalArtform, on 01/25/2009, -0/+11Now they can barely spare 7 seconds for a little intro bumper. The rest of the time they sell to advertisers. Time is money.
The shows are shorter than they used to be, also. Same reason. - bytor4232, on 01/25/2009, -1/+11Your missing out. Bewitched is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. Elizabeth Montgomery, may she rest in peace, is one of the most beautiful women who ever graced the small or big screen. I watched Bewitched every day in syndication growing up, and still watch it today when its on. It really holds up, still as witty and original as anything before or after.
I Dream of Jeanie was pretty good too, but Bewitched blew it out of the water IMHO. Also check out All in the Family and Sanford and Son if you get a sec too. Great social commentary. - JakeBC, on 01/25/2009, -0/+9I miss when TV shows had catchy theme songs.
- bytor4232, on 01/25/2009, -0/+8Great list. Bewitched was one of my favorite shows growing up, and I still enjoy watching it today. Elizabeth Montgomery was an awesome actress, may she rest in peace.
- boogieordie, on 01/25/2009, -0/+7I love I Dream of Jeannie. It wasn't until the second season (1966) that they used that opening (animation, in color, with the correct theme song), but when they got it right they stuck with it.
They mention that the Bewitched opening was enough to stand on it's own as a show, I Dream of Jeannie had a spinoff animated series in 1975. - realpolitik, on 01/25/2009, -0/+5Best animated opening titles on TV right now (and probably ever):

Yeah, yeah, I know it's an article about tv themes but I have to say if one can't apply it to something so mundane, would they be able to apply it to something more important?
Information, and history, belong to US. - stenhard, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4Watch the second version of the "Wild Wild West" intro...something different happens.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3unWr_b2Ew
They missed that in the article, by the way. - eufonia, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3Great article!
Right now there are people out there (mainly in films) who enjoyed the animated intros (Tarantino/Rodriguez/Rockwell/Anders' Four Rooms intro with music from Combustible Edison; The Incredibles intro (well, an animated intro on an animated film); the not-so-cool Pink Panther new film (the originals were übercool)) to name some. - farfromhere, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3It's comments like these that make me wish humanity would spontaneously combust.
- y0urcl0ne, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3I got lost halfway through your first "sentence".
- GreatSunJester, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Without watching either video (going from memory) -- you refer to James West changing from punching the woman who was going to stab him during the kiss, to having her swoon away from him?
redaction, it's not just for politics anymore! Han shot first. - KaiUno, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2I rather liked Fran Drescher. That thing with her voice... part of the act.
- jadambrinson, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Anyone else read it as "The Golden Age of Animated TV Opening Titties?"
Yeah, I know it doesn't make sense. - sanman, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Have you ever heard Fran Drescher on TV interviews? She sounds the same as her onscreen character.
- secrity, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1If you have cable TV, TV Land shows many of these shows.
- qwertydvorak, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Barbara Eden was the hottest and even held up well over the years:
her at 53: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/77 ...
her at 70: http://www.pollstaronline.com/CIC2004/images/Award ... - Gleemonex, on 01/25/2009, -1/+2The only 'Golden Age of' list The Nanny is going on is the Golden Age of Shows with lead actors whose voice doubles as a hyper-sonic bird repellent.
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -1/+2*as a result of his generic comment, checks out callmeminty's activity in his profile*
cancer. - Spacejack, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1The Incredibles END credits were completely badass. And it was an awesome way to do it because the context for the illustrations was already there. The Nanny deserves mention, for the titles and nothing else... and there were a lot more from the late sixties like Please Don't Eat the Daisies. Original I Love Lucy had cartoon credits too which are back on the TV Land reruns.
It was a good way to have a billboard or a screen or something where they could show an image of that week's sponsor, in the early recorded TV shows. - Toneloak, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Wow they don't make em like they used to.
- themastersb, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1These are all before my time. Still interesting though
- y0urcl0ne, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
- GreatSunJester, on 01/27/2009, -0/+1Hmm... since I never got to see them in order (and not in a long time) you have me wondering now. I always thought punch was first, then swoon, but your color/B&W would definitely put an order to it. Blows my theory of political correctness run amok away!
- diskit, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1oooh, what about the openings to movies... mainly form the 80s.
- sanman, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1I wouldn't say Elizabeth Montgomery of Bewitched was prettier than Barbara Eden of Jeannie. She was good-looking, no doubt. But Jeannie was prettier, and conveyed more innocence.
- apothekari, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Brevity=Wit.
- davidlow, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Sounds like the same singers from Giligan's Island.
- stenhard, on 01/27/2009, -0/+1What's interesting is that the punch version is later than the swoon, at least as far as I understand. Punch in color vs. swoon in B&W supports this. I wonder who they saw as being their audience that they felt the need to make that change.
- Meocross, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Its idiots like you that caused the era of Cartoons to die in america. at least japan is not half as stupid as you are.
- SreyaNotfilc, on 01/27/2009, -0/+1LOL, I remember watching the Bewitched opening on Nick at Nite when I was a kid. I thought "oh cool a new cartoon!", so I sat through the opening. To my disapointment, right after the theme song ended I was treated to a black and white live action show.
As I've gotten older, I came to like Bewitched, but couldn't stand it as a little kid since it wasn't animated and was often shown in black and white. - dragon76, on 01/27/2009, -0/+1Bewitched>Jeanie because they were always having cocktails at home. Classy.
- Gleemonex, on 01/25/2009, -1/+1Very Disappointing that this one was missing from the list:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1G-TsdNWGg
(also starring Imogene Coca as Shag) - modiggs, on 01/26/2009, -0/+0Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie are on everyday on WGN if you have that. (It's a Chicago network but carried by many cable companies.)
I think thawkth is right, it's not that you're too young, it's that you can't be bothered. - dxprog, on 01/26/2009, -1/+1I'd consider that more motion graphics than animation. All it was was some rotoscoping and After Effects fanciness (which, arguably, wasn't that fancy).
- kitsua, on 01/26/2009, -1/+1*slow clap*
- jakash, on 01/25/2009, -5/+2I'm too young to know any of these...
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -6/+0Missing this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-099EZMKyw - syntaxgs, on 01/25/2009, -12/+1having animating titles just opens the door to cartoon violence,I,E,depicting very bad physical abuse
There,s a reason you don,t have them to,day,,,,aside from the porno that is dragging society down at least they recognize that violence on televicion is a dieing trends
