- Peerstfreek, on 12/29/2008, -1/+11It should have just been 50 Calvin and Hobbes strips.
- jjremy, on 12/29/2008, -0/+5Did you seriously just say that Calvin & Hobbes is not well drawn?
Bill Watterson's sparse line use and use of space are just beautiful. He's a brush-and-ink god in my books. And his watercolours! He's one of my biggest artistic inspirations. - skotski, on 12/29/2008, -1/+4Boondocks?
- Davethe3rd, on 12/29/2008, -2/+4Megatokyo is Asian? Not that it's not beautiful, but that strip is a) a Webcomic and b) American.
Garfield? That strip hasn't been funny in the history of ever.
FAIL. - TheCooler72, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2Did you even bother to look at the others?
I agree that Calvin & Hobbes is one of the best I know of, but it's far from the only game in town. - hbyrne, on 12/29/2008, -2/+4Some amazingly diverse work there, but uniformly high-quality.
- ElChapusero, on 12/29/2008, -2/+3Pretty awful and incomplete list.
- myshl0ng, on 12/29/2008, -2/+3I bet B^U is pissed.
- RobotKeaton, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2I genuinely went through this list at least 5 times, because I thought it was completely impossible for anyone to make a list of best comic strips and forget The Peanuts. Buried.
- WhoDoneIt, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2Am I the only one that rarely ever laughs at comic strips? I have a father-in-law that constantly sends scanned strips to me, frustrating me to no end. Almost all seem like they are trying way to hard.
- Sonixunite, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2Wait... sense when were webcomics not comics?
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1a nice variety to look at.
- Davethe3rd, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1Not saying it's not, but there is a separate category for webcomics and like I said, Megatokyo is American.
- epynephrin, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2Did the list ignore completely Graphic Novels--I may be confusing myself by reading many of those in Trade Paperback format. If so, then where is the Alan Moore--V for Vendetta is an incredible novel, and some have said Watchmen is one of the greatest books written in the last century.
- twinklyJesus, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2Very few of the examples offered were "beautifully drawn". Most seem to be there because they are popular. Calvin & Hobbes, Dilbert and many aren't artistically well drawn. For example, the comic strip "Prince Valiant" was drawn by many artists, including, I believe, Frank Frazetta. Milo Manera is an example as well. The X-men and several of the graphic novels cited are also good examples. However, most of the comics in newspapers are crap and seldom (aside from Douglas Adams) are they funny.
If we're just listing popular or long running or just widespread, then where are Blondie, Family Circle, Hagar and Peanuts. (although I could have overlooked them) I didn't see them. - ExocetComLtd, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Nothing by Jean Giraud (aka Mobeus, author/illiustrator of Blueberry, Arzach, and conceptual designer for many famous sci-fi films), Will Eisner, Art Spiegelmen, Jack Kirby, Seigel and Schuster even!
Really just looks like a list of high name-recognition titles compiled by someone's who is very largely uninformed about comics. Even from a design perspective the author fails to note that many of these popular IPs have been drawn by dozens of different artists over the years. And especially galling for a site based around design is the inclusion of Garfield. I cannot think of a single comic IP that has sold out so badly and for nearly 15-20 years has had little to no creative input from Jim Davis whatsoever. - talonstriker, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2No love for Pearls Before Swine or Doonesbury?
- practicalize, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Seriously. There is *nothing* artistic about Dilbert...why slot 1?
- Davethe3rd, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1The show is beautiful, the comic not so much...
- inactive, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2Dugg for this link:
http://progressiveboink.com/archive/calvinhobbes.h ... - talonstriker, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2Are any of them actually "funny?" The only webcomic I've seen being remotely funny is xkcd (sometimes).
- valimar77, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2Interesting and informative, despite some disagreement.
- seneyr, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2I agree with you. Could be an accident that MT is located right above the Webcomic section where it ought to be.
- yunalala, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1I can understand putting Naruto and Bleach in there, but for the love of god, do not use fanart of those series as a reference!
- latexsolarbeef, on 12/29/2008, -3/+3That Dutch comic Gummbah is ***** weeeeird
- twinklyJesus, on 12/29/2008, -2/+2Look up Prince valiant comic strip, Milo Manera, anything Frazetta or bernie Wrightson. Calvin & Hobbes is crudely drawn and very 2-d looking. (which is fine, just making a distinction) Calvin & Hobbes' forte is content, not artistic. Artistically, it's no better than Family Circus.
- yoinksta, on 12/29/2008, -1/+1No Ware, Crumb, Clowes, Burns, Panter, or Hernandes Bros, but Dilbert!?
An Epic failure of list creation. - FredFredrickson, on 12/29/2008, -2/+2Penny Arcade?
