a) It's a heck of a lot more socially acceptable. There are plenty of stores in Tokyo (and elsewhere in Japan) entirely devoted to cosplay costumes and accessories. Along with the Japanese work ethic, this all leads to very high-quality costumes, wigs, etc.
b) Japanese people aren't fat... the vast majority, at least.

Second the female squall really creeps me out for some reason. At least I think that was a female. It was the picture where you first see someone dressed like squall, the second one is a dude.
