- LowROI, on 11/11/2009, -24/+644I don't think he's really trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes. Hot chick/ugly guy has been a sitcom staple for decades (The Flintstones, The Drew Carey show, The King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond etc). Love it or hate it, Family Guy (I can't speak for The Cleaveland show because I've never seen it) is only a of parody of American sitcoms of the 20th century. The plots may be nonsensical and at times just plain retarded, but the basic framework is just the standard sitcom, sans laugh track.
American dad, while still comprised of the same cookie cutter family, really is a different show. Its point driven plot is contingent, and its scope of humor really is directed at the current state of affairs in America, and not the "manatee formula" that seems to have taken over Family Guy. - sigmaman2, on 11/11/2009, -21/+398BRING BACK FUTURAMA!!!

- brettmjohnson, on 11/12/2009, -8/+266You have to consider the series of events:
Seth creates wildly funny show named Family Guy, and sells it to Fox.
Fox runs it for a couple of seasons and cancels it, because Fox corporate policy mandates canceling well liked, funny shows.
Seth clones Family Guy, creating American Dad, and sells it to Fox.
Fox doesn't notice that it is basically the same show, because the executives don't actually watch the ***** they program.
Fox notices that Family Guy is doing really well in syndication and DVDs, so decides to resurrect the show.
Seth says, "I already resurrected the show. You just didn't notice." Fox says "We want Family Guy, dammit!"
Seth brings back a re-animated walking corpse of Family Guy. Meg failed to re-animate properly, so Seth just propped her up in the corner, thinking Fox wouldn't notice. He occasionally throws food at her to see if it will stick and to encourage rats to chew on her corpse.
Fox loves the new brain-dead Family Guy. Seth can't believe it. They didn't get the joke.
Fox wants to expand Family Guy and asks for a spin-off. McFarland says "You're kidding me right?" Fox says "No."
Seth takes the lamest character from Family Guy and makes a newer, lamer Family Guy that takes more ink to color the cells.
McFarland wonders if Fox will even noticed that he stopped showing up at the office 6 months ago, and has trained his dog to type new scripts on his Blackberry.
Seth submits a new show concept to Fox. It stars a fat comic that has spent 18 months in a Vegas hotel room, snorting coke off the breasts of a stripper, while his alcoholic dog writes screenplays. - Tddupre, on 11/11/2009, -8/+263dugg for "manatee formula"

- rudyrudiger84, on 11/11/2009, -14/+184The bottom line is that there is no excuse for the Cleveland Show to exist.
- wampalord, on 11/11/2009, -18/+129American Dad is actually quite good, which is surprising given the drastic downturn Family Guy has taken

- rocknog, on 11/11/2009, -2/+55This is rare on digg, I know, but I still enjoy both Family Guy and American Dad. But here's how I see things these days. To me, it seems like American Dad has become the show Seth really focuses on, as there's always a coherent plot, and the best jokes are directly connected to that plot. On the other end of the spectrum, it seems that Family Guy has become more of a sketch comedy show, where Seth presents the jokes that he thought were good but couldn't find a way to tie them into any bigger story.

- Gizza, on 11/12/2009, -1/+47I didn't like American Dad at the start. But it seems to be that as Family Guy gets worse American Dad gets better. I've enjoyed American Dad more than Family Guy for a while now.
- chriswastaken, on 11/11/2009, -6/+49Don't worry, no one has seen The Cleveland Show.

- Hardataq, on 11/12/2009, -1/+41You think THAT'S bad?
- DestroyedAUS, on 11/11/2009, -2/+39Seth Macfarlane wouldn't be 'getting away with this' if people weren't watching it. In any case, while FG and AD use similar styles, they are a pretty good example of 2 different roads you can take with said styles. If you are going to rip on a show, rip on CSI or L&O, who clearly just rehash teams and locations and label it a different department or city to make more money. Bottom line: I'd rather watch the stuff Seth makes over 99.9% of television, so it must have something going for it... Or the industry is just *****, either way.

- MorpheousMarty, on 11/12/2009, -0/+25Just a nit to pick, but Family Guy was resurrected before American Dad came on the air. The time-line went:
Family Guy Airs, gets canceled, sells more DVD's that anyone could imagine, gets back on the air, American Dad airs finally Cleveland spins off. Anyhow, just a small detail, the rest of your analysis is pretty spot on. - kimbomitt, on 11/12/2009, -2/+27For some reason reminds me of this:

Seth McFarlane isn't the only animator to ever do the same thing over and over. - sgxyay, on 11/12/2009, -1/+25His rap segment in the last episode was pretty kickass.
- datagod, on 11/12/2009, -5/+26I thought it would be stupid, but I actually like it. I watch because it makes me laugh.
- limbride, on 11/12/2009, -1/+22I have to say I found the rescent Family Guy episode, The Road to The Multiverse, to be hilarious.
- AraleNorimaki, on 11/12/2009, -1/+22Animation is built on plagiarism! If it weren't for someone plagiarizing The Honeymooners, we wouldn't have The Flintstones. If someone hadn't ripped off Sergeant Bilko, there'd be no Top Cat. Huckleberry Hound, Chief Wiggum, Yogi Bear? Hah! Andy Griffith, Edward G. Robinson, Art Carney."
—Roger Myers,
