- BTallack, on 11/21/2008, -38/+359Am I the only one who does not understand why Americans are so scared of so called "socialism"?
- beartamer, on 11/21/2008, -36/+323A typical US phobia of the 'socialism' is just a byproduct of the Cold war
- reallytempting2, on 11/21/2008, -21/+162Feels a bit like this.
- AllHereTruth, on 11/21/2008, -17/+152no. and i live here.
Theres a difference between 'True Socialism' and allowing the Government to care for its citizens.
Provide a descent education.
Provide a police force. Firemen. Hospitals. Aid for College. Aid for housing.
AND
Healthcare. - Ninjapope, on 11/21/2008, -2/+118"Provide a descent education."

ENGLISH *****, DO YOU SPEAK IT - fuxxx, on 11/21/2008, -4/+50Teaching your citizens to be afraid of socialism is the best excuse for not providing decent public education, public health and other services.
- ceredron, on 11/21/2008, -0/+44"historically socialist societies"
I don't think you know what that entails, otherwise you'd be pointing at every European nation, the United States, Canada, and The Asian trifecta (Korea, Japan, China). I think you need to understand what socialism is, and not just know what people call it offhand, because socialism is inherent in most "capitalist" states' agendas. - algaeturd, on 11/21/2008, -18/+61Rich people only hate it when poor people get some assistance. At that point, it's irresponsible. Poor people are losers, drug addicts, they're going to use the money on booze, drugs and to go out and get pregnant so they can perpetuate the welfare state.
But, super rich ***** LOVE to give themselves free money and they'll gladly take it (if not rob you for it.) Capitalism for the poor, socialism for the rich. Rich people have their hands out harder and farther than any of the poor people I know. These ***** take private jets to go begging...the poor people I know walk to the end of the street and hold a ***** cardboard sign
What's the difference between the two? A cardboard sign vs. a private jet. America is ***** up factor five. - fhsieh, on 11/21/2008, -33/+71The people who are rich during this economic downturn (or who will soon be considered rich if/when it gets worse) are the people who made sound investments and responsible financial decisions. Unfortunately higher taxes for them means they are being penalized for doing the right thing.
If you want to make bad financial decisions, you should be free to do so, but you should expect to suffer the consequences (although the government is partially responsible for promoting reckless lending/spending in the first place). At no point should government step in to intervene. Once you allow the government to intevene (under the banner/rhetoric of "saving the economy", "saving special interests", "preserving freedom"), you are actually supporting planned intervention, not freedom.
It's not outright socialism, but it goes against our principles of freedom and individual enterprise. Our current government and the general public are just too uneducated to realize it. - courbple, on 11/21/2008, -0/+36"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist." -Dom Helder Camara.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -3/+38Sure not everyone can make sound investments, that's fine and those people will never be that wealthy.
What about the people who just work for a living and expect to be able to live a modest life? The problem is that it's getting increasingly harder to do so as the gap between classes grows. - AllHereTruth, on 11/21/2008, -2/+35Yep. Think thats the point.
- dig1x, on 11/21/2008, -5/+38Redistribution of wealth from the poor to the rich is retarded. I agree.
- AllHereTruth, on 11/21/2008, -6/+37"You can tell me" For sure? really?
Do you know what its like living without healthcare. Do you know what its like to get sick and have no money for a doctors visit.
Do you know the fear of losing you job, the fear that your family would get sick, and you would have no way to pay for medical treatment except for the ER.
How about walking away from the ER with a bill of 10grand. Can you TELL ME THAT?
no. you cant. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -6/+36Whats funny to me is that we already have "socialist" programs in place such as our school system or social security. We've been socialist for a long time by the standards these retards use to determine that something is "socialist".
Im definitely not for having the government run everything, but education and healthcare are 2 things that anyone that lives in our country should not have to worry about paying for. Our tax dollars are already paying for a whoooole lot of ***** we dont need, i just cant comprehend why people are so against our tax dollars paying for something we ALL need. - thealsir, on 11/21/2008, -4/+34It started with the Red Scare in the late 40s/early 50s. There was a lot of propaganda demonizing not only communism but socialism at that time. There's still undulations of that in American society.
Before the 40s/50s most Americans really didn't give a damn about it. In fact I think the communist party in the US was rather strong before then. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -3/+33O_O
you're freaking me out here with that usage of logics - I do believe the Digg TOU limits the use of logic, or at least one would think. - Murdats, on 11/21/2008, -5/+34probably something to do with why they think liberal is a dirty word, think that gun control and public healthcare can never work, think that roundabouts are stupid and so on.
- lerker, on 11/21/2008, -8/+36That is a complete non-sequitur. A progressive income tax system, whereby higher portions of income are taxed at increasing marginal rates, has nothing to do with government bailouts. The two concepts are entirely unrelated.
- Azerael, on 11/21/2008, -1/+28Every nation falls eventually. If they didn't, the USA wouldn't even have come into existence. Like life, society evolves. People just need to learn to deal with it, and make the best of society while it lasts, instead of trying to make that society exist forever at the expense of the wellbeing of the people.
- draculthemad, on 11/21/2008, -6/+3240% of Americans think they are part of the top 5%.
A large part of the GOP party base evidently thinks that raising taxes on the very top income tax bracket means them. Even if they are collecting a paycheck on a weekly basis instead of employing hundreds of people.
It doesn't make sense why they are afraid of socialism.
Especially since most of our closest allies ARE socialists by most standards. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -3/+29C O_O MBO BREAKER

- jehan60188, on 11/21/2008, -8/+30yah, and when the rich ***** up, they demand a $700 billion bailout.
but it's ok, it's not their fault that they set up predatory lending schemes that were bound for failure! - fattehboi, on 11/21/2008, -3/+25! ? . " " ; :
PUNCTUATION *****.
DO YOU USE IT? - cheeseplease, on 11/21/2008, -2/+23Here in Holland the rich pay ~50%.
- AmaDaden, on 11/21/2008, -2/+23That's all very true but you are not taking in to account the loop holes and other tricks that they use. They use their power and influence to push the amount they pay down even further. To the point where they pay a smaller percentage then others. For example Warren Buffet recently complained about how he has a lower tax rate then his secretary and cleaning lady.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/money/tax/article ...
In the end we need a balance. It's not fair to pay a higher rate because you make more but at the same time it's not fair to have to pay the same rate and barely be able to make enough to live. - palehorse864, on 11/21/2008, -7/+27Why so cialist?
- mellowgreen, on 11/21/2008, -13/+33Pretty much sums it up.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -5/+25It's not THE monopoly guy, it's a caricature of a stereotype of a wealthy industrialist circa early 1900s, which is the same stereotype the monopoly guy is based on.
- UltraMegaFilms, on 11/21/2008, -4/+24Taxes are not a penalty, they are the cost of making money in our economy. If you don't like to pay taxes when you make money in OUR economy, then ***** right off.
- AaronCo, on 11/21/2008, -1/+19Sue your accountant, if you were legally adopted he should've claimed each of you as a dependent. With 14 kids his tax bracket would be much lower.
- AzureRise, on 11/21/2008, -5/+23The lack of intellect is part of the joke therefore making it intellectual.
- AllHereTruth, on 11/21/2008, -6/+24Right...so your point is? Wait is THAT your point.
Really? - AllHereTruth, on 11/21/2008, -6/+24@ 'fmoliveria' THATS your argument against universal healthcare.
And thats based on what? experience? logic? some random news report that your cant really remember?
Because from my experience at the ER is, wait, wait, wait, nurse, wait, wait, doctor, wait, test, test, wait, wait, nurse, wait, wait, doctor, wait.
