- cyrusuncc, on 11/25/2008, -76/+574There are bad apples in both groups, and i don't think this comic represents the majority of either
- kimbja98, on 11/25/2008, -61/+522Perhaps this is why God prefers atheists?:
http://www.mrwiggleslovesyou.com/rehab477.html - PWoT, on 11/25/2008, -41/+501He had it coming for wearing that "Atheist" t-shirt everywhere.
- schrutefan, on 11/25/2008, -12/+335I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.
-Gandhi - Sublex, on 11/25/2008, -83/+394Ah religion.
You're so silly. - ShutItDown, on 11/25/2008, -86/+351Damn Atheists, with their logic and proper thinking.
- bureksir, on 11/25/2008, -91/+256yep, just look at those religious freaks, holding on to their symbols without any rationale or reason, ready to bite your head off at the mention of any alternative live path. Ha! Fools!
Say what?!? Are you dissing my iphone/mac/pc/blackberry/webcomic/blog/... Come here, you little @!!$%@#!^%@ - tamman2000, on 11/25/2008, -8/+128@Hobbes24
People wear crucifix necklaces all the time. Do you berate them for being douches? - lornefs, on 11/25/2008, -6/+120Because there was no Adam and Eve and your ancestors evolved in a climate that favored a darker skin color.
- wissler, on 11/25/2008, -3/+103The most important distinction isn't between religious vs. atheist, it's between those who respect the inalienable rights of others vs. those who don't.
- drmangrum, on 11/25/2008, -31/+128The truly ironic thing is, Free Will is one of the most important tenants of faith. One is supposed to CHOOSE to believe and follow. Yet, too often the religious zealots seek to force those they can't convince to follow their edicts.
Hypocrites one and all. - ClevelandBrown, on 11/25/2008, -14/+110My only question is, if Adam and Eve were caucasian... why am I black?
- metapop, on 11/25/2008, -1/+89as a christian, it truly makes me sad that other christians act this way and have developed the reputation (and deservedly so) that they have... the bible is clear that god gives us free will, and it is unreasonable for christians to expect people who do not believe in god to follow a set of rules, some of which aren't even in the bible, but are cultural.
- okyourturn, on 11/25/2008, -10/+96Society bends over backward to be accommodating to religious sensibilities but not to other kinds of sensibilities. If I say something offensive to religious people, I'll be universally censured, including by many atheists. But if I say something insulting about Democrats or Republicans or the Green Party, one is allowed to get away with that. Hiding behind the smoke screen of untouchability is something religions have been allowed to get away with for too long.
-- Richard Dawkins, quoted in Natalie Angier, "Confessions of a Lonely Atheist," New York Times Magazine, January 14, 2001 - SurrealDream, on 11/25/2008, -3/+82Religion's so cute. I'd ask it out if it weren't so needy.
- antoniuk, on 11/25/2008, -11/+89Somehow I think the body count of Christianity is a little greater than atheism. Freedom of religion yes, freedom to denounce someone for not believe what you believe, no.
Go and be christian but the second you infringe on someone's right as a human being to live their life without harm to others, you become a problem. - nesagwa, on 11/25/2008, -5/+79Your response to a post about a comic being too over generalized is to post another sweeping generalization.
Brilliant. - inactive, on 11/25/2008, -15/+81I don't get why people say that it's equivalent. There are no atheist laws, forcing atheist values on non-atheists. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for Christians. There are countless examples of Christians using the force of the law to impose their idiotic beliefs and morality on the rest of us. From anti-sodomy laws to the teaching of Intelligent Design in public schools, Christians want to talk about people keeping their beliefs to themselves, but do not follow through in their actions.
- LanceUppercut, on 11/25/2008, -23/+85Wow my grandpa in a comic.
- XxtraLarGe, on 11/25/2008, -4/+66The biggest problem with a comic like this is the guy who claims to be a Christian is acting exactly in the opposite way a Christian should respond to any non-believer:
2 Timothy 2:24-26 (New International Version)
24 And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
So, to all my atheist friends here on Digg, next time one of my fellow Christian assails you, please point out this scripture to them, and both of you will be better off for it. - smashblu, on 11/25/2008, -2/+63I thought the second one was hilarious! "I don't steal because it's kind of a dick thing to do". Seriously, so it would be OK to steal if the Bible said it was?
- DiscoUnderpants, on 11/25/2008, -21/+82Is questioning irrational and unscientific statements presented as universal fact "trying to tear down religion"?
- GunWraith, on 11/25/2008, -1/+60@XxtraLarGe, It's simple really. In order for any society to exist in any meaningful way it has to have a set of rules for what is right and what is wrong. It's a matter of respecting one's society and / or fearing the consequences of going against the societes rules that govern behaviour, regardless of whether they are atheistic or not.
- Tiptup300, on 11/25/2008, -3/+60I don't think it's possible to vote for McCain AND Obama...
- ViSioN, on 11/25/2008, -2/+57tamman wins.
Also note all of the bumper stickers and other things stuck to the back of cars promoting Jesus and God. People love flaunting that they're Christian. - TotalHalibut, on 11/25/2008, -18/+73It works both ways, and I do wish both groups would put their handbags down and stop embarrassing the rest of us.
- johntmeche3, on 11/25/2008, -5/+60Atheists should be allowed to get married just like anyone else!
- Hetman, on 11/25/2008, -1/+51But if you allow athiests to marry the next thing you know people will start marrying dogs.
- bpoteat, on 11/25/2008, -1/+49Firstly, that statement in relation to atheism makes no sense - hypocrisy is not directly related to any religion or lack thereof. Secondly, sure there is. It would be perfectly logical to tell someone one thing and do another if it is in your best interest to do so. Maybe not a cool thing to do, but nothing illogical about it.
Or are you saying that religion is inherently hypocritical and therefore contains no logic? Either way... - smashblu, on 11/25/2008, -1/+48Because it's a dick thing to do?
- tamman2000, on 11/25/2008, -9/+55Why would anyone deserve to be berated for wearing a t-shirt proclaiming they are an atheist?
- mk2ja, on 11/25/2008, -4/+45That is NOT what the golden rule says.
- Quaterni0n, on 11/25/2008, -7/+45@norman619: There's a direct correlation between religion and ignorance.
- SurrealDream, on 11/25/2008, -3/+39When I was a kid, I was told the story that God made humans out of clay in the earth and baked them in the middle of the sun. His first batch was undercooked (white), his second batch was overcooked (black), and the third batch was juuuuust right (brown).
...See, Hindus can be ***** too. Like the story of Goldilocks wasn't racist enough. - inactive, on 11/25/2008, -5/+40Which faith?
Because my bible's God killed every human being on earth for acting how they wanted to and even asked some dude to kill his son as a proof of commitment. - Alejandro79, on 11/25/2008, -9/+43When American atheists spearhead and implement something as hateful as Prop 8 then you can have your "both sides are just as bad" cliche back.
- spriggig, on 11/25/2008, -7/+41"I don't know that atheists should be regarded as citizens, nor should they be regarded as patriotic. This is one nation under God."
~George Bush the First
So a former President said that 20+ million Americans should not be regarded as citizens. If he had said that about blacks, gays or jews it would have been front-page news, but he said it about atheists.
Any poor, persecuted Christians out there been told they shouldn't be American citizens because of what they believe? No? Didn't think so. - 7m7uf, on 11/25/2008, -0/+34Well they can't be black - because once you go black you don't go back!
- dfross, on 11/25/2008, -2/+35@ftx437: That's dangerous, do we allow wilful ignorance (or blatant untruths) based on belief, or claims of belief?
This reminds me of that bill o'reilly interview with richard dawkins, when o'reilly came out with the classic "This is the truth for me". You could almost see Dawkins' synapses fry at the idea of a localised, personal truth - that something is a fact, just for one person, because they choose to believe in it, and as such is unassailable and must be respected.
It may be tearing down religion, but that's only because religion = faith + morals + set of facts. Just because you're questioning the set of facts, some of which are obviously untrue, doesn't mean you're questioning the rest.
If religion spent more time telling people how to live well and less time trying to dictate history this would be a better world. - Kev931, on 11/25/2008, -2/+35If Christians actually followed their Christ maybe they wouldn't be so bad...
How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. - Luke 6:42 - inactive, on 11/25/2008, -4/+35I'm curious: how is an atheist just as bad as a hardcore Christian? Does he shove reality down your throat?
- spriggig, on 11/25/2008, -10/+41You have the right to believe in whatever you want. I have the right to laugh at your silly, self-imposed ignorance.
- VanishingLex, on 11/25/2008, -1/+31@Jim, yeah gravity is a theory too.
- SurrealDream, on 11/25/2008, -0/+29Looking beyond the ridiculous paraphrasing and the fact that the quote seems to have missed the top of your head by the length of a bus, it's just impossible to take sincerely anything said by someone with the online handle of "fartcloud".
- Fabbyfubz, on 11/25/2008, -8/+36Nope. Macs suck.
- antoniuk, on 11/25/2008, -1/+28No what I am saying is you are free to believe what you want. The second your belief compromises anyone's freedom of individuality, life, happiness, and freedom from prejudice, that is when you are no longer free to express your views.
I have nothing against Christianity, Islam, etc etc. I have everything against preventing others from having the freedom to believe and do what they want so long as it does not harm others.
I will defend anyone who is being oppressed and not oppressing others regardless of whether or not I believe in what they do.
That is the basic fundamental of most religions and what should be practiced. The lack of that is why I have a problem with most organized religions. Exclusivity and discrimination are no way to live. Live and let live. - Dumbledorito, on 11/25/2008, -7/+34What's really funny is that if what fundamentalists say is true, some sort of higher power should win their arguments for them and have the Earth swallow up the non-believers.
That is, if that whole omnipotent, all-powerful, and, by looking at many passages from their texts, "wrathful" being is hanging about.
And if someone wants to say, "oh, phooey, that's just the Old Testament and Jesus changed that" and so on, then why is the OT cited so often by those who want some group of people (let's just pick homesexuals) singled out? When you point out that they themselves eat pork and work on Sundays, they go "oh, phooey, that's just the OT and Jesus changed that." - inactive, on 11/25/2008, -10/+37Burden of proof fallacy.
The difference is that Atheists are right. - threemagic, on 11/26/2008, -1/+27hey look, it's repeat-the-opening-paragraph-with-very-little-change guy
