- LucasVB, on 12/27/2008, -2/+140Congratulations, you've just compared two stock-fiction stories.
- chocobomog, on 12/27/2008, -0/+109orangederange mentioned it above, but here is the link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hero_with_a_Thous ...
Basically all major hero stories follow this same formula which is detailed above. When broken down to their fundamentals, Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Matrix, Kung Fu Panda, numerous tales in Roman/Greek mythology, nearly all fantasy RPGs, etc. all follow the same plot. - iSeven, on 12/27/2008, -6/+93My 12 year old niece said it best:
"Kung Fu Panda is like the Star Wars for kids, because Star Wars is hard to understand." - cerealjynx, on 12/27/2008, -2/+82Almost as mindblowing as Fight Club being a fast forward of Calvin and Hobbes.
- AmyVernon, on 12/27/2008, -5/+57Well, I'm sold.
- quigles3000, on 12/27/2008, -1/+44Funny you should say that. After writing this article, an "Achievement Unlocked" image appeared on my screen.
- elfprince13, on 12/27/2008, -1/+33wait.....she thinks Star Wars is hard to understand?
- Fishn2, on 12/27/2008, -1/+32I understood it fine at seven...
- orangederange, on 12/27/2008, -4/+32Interesting read. This is somewhat similar to Campbell's monomyth... from the "Hero with a Thousand Faces."

- TechnoRabbit, on 12/27/2008, -2/+19Star Wars is Star Wars for chicks.
-A chick. - dicepackage, on 12/27/2008, -1/+17My friends and me all agreed that it seemed a lot like the plot to Beverly Hills Ninja.
- WorldLeader, on 12/27/2008, -0/+15"...Star Wars is hard to understand."
BLASPHEMY! - TheFuzzyOne, on 12/27/2008, -1/+16http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero%27s_journey
Proof that Kung Fu Panda follows the basic storyline of every written story ever. - Samo89, on 12/27/2008, -8/+21also like star wars for chicks
- CyndiSmith, on 12/27/2008, -4/+17The part where Tai Lung was unexpectedly Po's father was a dead giveaway for me...
(seriously, how did I not see this! awesome!) - inkswamp, on 12/27/2008, -0/+13I posted that exact same comment yesterday.
- DouglasQ, on 12/27/2008, -2/+14Star Wars itself is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's feudal Japanese action 'Hidden Fortress'.
Also, the first guy Darth Vader strangles get's interupted just as he's saying the words 'Hidden Fortress' as a nod.
Fun fact. - quigles3000, on 12/27/2008, -0/+12Qui-Gon Jinn apprenticed Obi-Wan. Yoda trained him.

- supaklaw, on 12/27/2008, -1/+12Silly technorabbit, Star Wars is for kids!
- HalsMyPal, on 12/27/2008, -0/+11kids today..... all they want is explosions and fat pandas played by jack black.
- inkswamp, on 12/27/2008, -1/+12There's almost no way a modern adventure/sci-fi movie couldn't appear to copy Star Wars. George Lucas read Joseph Campbell's work concerning the common threads in mythology and he intentionally incorporated as much of those as he could (and reportedly got feedback from Campbell himself along the way.) Part of Campbell's work was to show how the common themes evolved and why they have such an impact on the human psyche, and Lucas wanted to use that to create something huge. That's why we all look at Star Wars and recognize its faults and occasional cheesiness but still love it.
- Hetman, on 12/27/2008, -1/+11It is pretty much the hero's quest, which happens in almost every kung fu movie. Kid with no experience goes out, realizes he has something unique about him and destroys a powerful enemy with help from friends and a few wise masters. I mean it is like every JRPG ever created.
- Pake, on 12/28/2008, -0/+9No, actually the amount of similarities Star Wars has to Kung Fu movies is staggering and the amount of similarities Kung Fu movies have to other stories and legends is staggering.
Wise old man? Check.
From zero to hero? Check.
Evil overlord? Check.
Team compose of experienced individuals? Check.
I could keep going, but it would be pointless. - NuttyVirus, on 12/27/2008, -2/+10Everybody was kung fu fighting. Those cats were fast as lightning. In fact it was a little bit frightning.... sorry couldn't resist.
- divinediva, on 12/27/2008, -1/+9I expected a certain level of cuteness in Kung Fu Panda.
- rollerboy, on 12/27/2008, -1/+9It is the most common story ever told. Let me demonstrate with another example
Skywalker - Frodo
Obi-Wan - Aragon
Darth Vader - Sauron
Yoda - Gandalf
Jedi - The fellowship
If that doesn't convince you then just look at the story of Jesus and think of him as Skywalker. All the stories are a little different, Tai Lung is not Po's dad. - CogitatorX, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8Actually Lucas started making the claims that SW was similar to Campbell's monomyth long after the release of SW. Campbell mentioned SW as an example of monomyth then Lucas who was just trying to make his own Flash Gordon jumped in with with "uh, yeah I meant to do that". Surely nobody in late 2008 thinks Lucas has the creative talent to purposely do that.
- AJL221893, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8If Tai Lung were a panda too, now that would make things interesting.
- LucasVB, on 12/27/2008, -0/+7Another great, perhaps more formal, read about this is The Writer's Journey: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Writer's_Journey: ...
- Jeebugorn, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6Skywalker - Harry Potter
Darth Vader - Voldermort
Yoda - Dumbledore
Han Solo - Ron
Leia - Hermionie
Star Wars musical score composed by - John Williams
Harry Potter musical score compose by - John Williams - painting, on 12/27/2008, -3/+9that never happened.
- daschupa, on 12/27/2008, -3/+9I think the author needs to go watch some Kung Fu flicks and find out how many elements Star Wars borrowed from them. Kung Fu Panda is a parody of the old Kung Fu films, Star Wars just borrowed heavily from them that's why there are similarities.
- superflydugg, on 12/27/2008, -1/+7i'm not going to read the article because it is all based on Joseph Campbell's observations of stories that humans have been telling for centuries, call to adventure, refusal to go, meets father figure, supernatural powers are granted, enters hell...you read the rest.
of course it works the story has been told a million times, disney knows it, lucas knew it (i hope, if not happy accident) and everybody else should know it, it makes for a great story!!! - inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6Bad Boys 2, which was just a retelling of Macbeth
- kizzyle0508, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6Yes, but the Lion King was openly known to be an adaptation of Hamlet, meaning they directly used the shakespeare in making their movie and would not deny it.
- fruscianteisgod, on 12/27/2008, -0/+5which is a loose basis for star wars, i actually saw an interview with campbell on 60 minutes i believe that was filmed at skywalker ranch
- cstaylor, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5Thanks tips.
- nrevans, on 12/27/2008, -2/+7If you've ever studied basic mythological structure in film and literature you would see that almost EVERY action/adventure movie/book fits these exact criteria. There's actually a few more criteria (I think there are 7 total), but these are the biggies. Watch for it and you'll see it a lot...
- limestarch, on 12/27/2008, -3/+8Why don't people look into Jospeh Campbell's hero cycle? That is where Lucas got his inspiration. You could make the Star Wars comparison to many other movies as well.
- bobbymoney, on 12/27/2008, -1/+6unnecessful x 2? Paste Edit Fail
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+5But Po isn't an ordinary Panda. He can use The Force. It comes from his (unkown) father, who was trained by Oogway (that's why Oogway saw that Po could be the Dragon Warrior)
I bet you 10$ that this is exactly what the plot of the 2nd movie will be. - da_bradler, on 12/27/2008, -1/+5Actually Star Wars itself is Dune for kids. Kung fu panda is Dune filtered to the point of pre-schoolers
- rolf, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4I know, I'm probably taking it too seriously. But seeing what *****-ups some of my old friends are, I'm not taking a chance here with my nephews and niece^^
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4Do either of them sync up to Dark Side of the Moon?
- da_bradler, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4Gurney Halleck trained Duke Leto Atreides
- paulisnotdead, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4Exactly, I love Joseph Campbell, that book also does a really good job of inter connecting the various religions of the world
