- enantiodromia, on 07/18/2009, -38/+221It always seemed fishy to me that the supposedly "loving" God was the one willing to banish you for eternity for even the tiniest infraction, where as Lucifer, the "evil" God, accepted everyone for who they truly were, without exception.
- socivitus, on 07/18/2009, -6/+158Now THAT is a welcome package!
- therealkid, on 09/10/2009, -5/+130Ugh. An eternal dance party WOULD be hell.

- Shreder1, on 07/18/2009, -5/+94A Dance Card? Is that like a driver's license for dancing?
- Scira, on 07/18/2009, -6/+94Not all Catholics believe that, there are some who think that only non believers get sent to hell, everyone else, including baby raping bob and serial killer sue get eternal happiness, as long as they worship god.
- JigoroKano, on 07/18/2009, -3/+89The artist's bandwidth? Most of those other images are advertisements. Now he gets nothing.
- pinkfish411, on 07/18/2009, -4/+67That would seem fishy to most Christians too, since pretty much no church teaches that heaven and hell work anything like the way you're describing them. Satan isn't conceived as an "evil God" who "accepts" people. In most Christian lore, Satan is an evil creation of God who, out of insatiable pride, wants nothing more than to destroy everything and everyone that God has created. Some older lore understood him to be the guardian of the dead in Hades, not as one who "accepts" people but who keeps them enslaved by death; thus, in some of the earliest Christian "ransom" atonement theories, Christ was crucified so that he could descend into Hades and rescue all those who were chained up there by Satan. And the book of Revelation is clear: in the end, Satan will be cast away into the lake of fire; this "hell" is not some place where people go to be "accepted" by Satan but a place where everything that wants to destroy God's good creation is cut off from that creation and never allowed to infect it again.
Those who believe in a Satan and a hell anything like the one you've described have simply not understood the teachings of any of the orthodox, mainstream Christian churches. Christianity is not dualistic; there's not good God and evil God, only one God and a corrupted servant of God who wants to destroy God and God's creation. - nbluth, on 07/18/2009, -0/+63You gotta pace yourself if you're drinking for eternity

- enantiodromia, on 07/19/2009, -3/+37I have, actually. One of my favorite topics to learn about is how "The Devil" has changed throughout history.
I have learned about El Satan's role as the "only angel allowed to question Yahweh", for the purpose of having someone to discuss things with, such as in Job, the oldest book in the Bible.
I have enjoyed learning that A: almost every ancient religion has a Garden of Eden story, and B: Christianity is the only one in which the Serpent is seen as an Evil force instead of a Divine force.
I am always reminded of the fact that in Islam, Satan's only crime is loving God more than Humans, and the only thing that nourishes him in Hell, is the memory of his Beloved's voice saying "Be Gone!".
I am entertained by the notion that there are a few nicknames of Satan which also happen to be nicknames of Jesus Christ (Scape Goat & Morning Star for starters, I'll let you find the rest).
I find it absolutely fascinating that "Lucifer" literally means "Light Bearer/Bringer", yet this name is now attributed to the Devil, and find it even more fascinating that if you ask a mainstream Christian about this, their pre-programmed answer is "well, that's a False Light".
I really could go on and on and on about this.
Can you? - cannonball, on 07/19/2009, -0/+34http://www.explosm.net/comics/987/

- lisaawesome, on 07/18/2009, -0/+26If I know my old timey traditions well enough I believe a dance card is something girls would have at a dance and they would assign a different guy to each song.

- therealkid, on 09/10/2009, -10/+27That's because the majority of the world doesn't understand God or what He's taught. They twist things to their own beliefs so that no matter what, they'll be the ones up there in heaven. But not everyone has that view of God and the devil. My beliefs say that only those that know God and then deny him fully will be sent to everlasting hell, while everyone else will be judged to varying degrees. It's more in-depth than that, but you get the idea.

- pinkfish411, on 07/19/2009, -2/+12Paulish, Christian theology generally understands pride in terms of wanting to exist apart from God or wanting to take the place of God, as in the story of Adam and Eve and the forbidden fruit: "Eat this fruit and you shall become as gods." At its extreme, it is understood to wish seek the destruction of everything that stands in the way of this goal. Satan, the symbol of pride, wants to destroy the world precisely because he cannot be its god and precisely because the world is loved by God and is deemed good by God.
In my own Christian tradition, Eastern Orthodoxy, this is often understood to imply even that Satan desires his own destruction rather than remain a creation of God and be loved by God, but God doesn't allow to be destroyed anything He created and deems good. It is nothing other than Satan's eternally futile, Sisyphean attempt to destroy himself that causes his pride-crazed psyche to "burn" forever as if in a fire. - ZenMojo, on 07/19/2009, -0/+10So...what you're saying is...Heaven's got weed?

- pinkfish411, on 07/19/2009, -1/+8Well, let's see...Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, Anglicanism, the Reformed and Lutheran churches, the Baptists, American evangelicals...I can go on and on, but I think you get the point. Hell, the Wikipedia page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_teaching_ab ... ) isn't especially detailed, but one thing it does do is make clear that Satan is a "fallen angel who rebelled against God," right in the opening paragraph. I thought this was basic knowledge, but I never cease to be astounded at how profoundly ignorant of the most basic Christian teaching some of the people I run across really are. Satan "lioved God the most and would not bow to down to Man"? What bizarre sect of Christianity were you studying if you got the impression that that's what Christians think?
And no, God is not everything. No *****! Once again, Christianity 101. Christians are monotheists, not pantheists; we do not believe that God is everything, and in fact, we usually regard that as heretical. God created everything, and God is present to everything and perhaps even indwells everything, but is most emphatically NOT identical to everything.
So what are you trying to prove? That you know less about Christianity than most five-year-olds I know? Good job, you've made your point. - jardine64, on 07/19/2009, -0/+7At the risk of sounding like an after school special: I think we've found out who the REAL devil is.
