X-Men/New Mutants aren't enough lets take tons of books put X in front of all of them stick a mutant or 2 in, voila, money. Not enough? Fine, give everyone their own title to boot (Rogue, Gambit, etc)
Title is getting stale? Kill the main character, wait a year, reboot the franchise.
In the end, all the X-Books, Carnage, etc were what ended up getting me out of comics for good. Pretty much everything else you said is spot on though. Granted some of the Xmen's individual titles were good, they clearly were conceived as a cash grab in an era when the Xmen were hugely popular, and collectors editions and relaunching titles to get a new #1 with like 8 different covers were the norm.
