- jboitnott, on 02/09/2009, -1/+27This had to happen sooner or later. It's going to make a lot of people very happy.
- msaleem, on 02/09/2009, -1/+21That is very cool news. I think the screen is just about right for flicking through panes.
- YME1280, on 02/09/2009, -1/+10That will be a day 1 commitment. The only thing missing is the smell of a freshly printed comic (get on that ***** apple, Next-Gen iPhone with Smell App).
- ArthurSucks, on 02/11/2009, -0/+9This in-motion comic idea sound really bad. How about Marvell Starts selling cbz and cbr files with 300 dpi artwork? For a high quality cbz, I'm willing to drop 2 bucks. No cartoons, not cheesy voice actors, just crisp clean comic pages.
- xt0ph3r, on 02/10/2009, -1/+8I think this might be cool for the younger set, but these "motion comics" sound a bit gimmicky. I'm trying not to pre-judge though. I'd like to see the results of what they did with Whedon's run on X-men. It's the "original content" I think that might end up being a little weak. (Spider-woman as the first original title on this platform? Really?)
Anyways, glad they're at least trying to evolve. Let's see how it plays out. - Ricochetbiscuit, on 02/09/2009, -1/+7My kid is going to be all over this. Brilliant!
- Korgmeister, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5I have only one question: Will there be Deadpool?
- Ratteler, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5If they are DRM free, I'll buy.
- GreatWhiteSnark, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5Yeah, but over a 56kbps connection.
- XMovieGodX, on 02/10/2009, -4/+9In Russia, comic downloads you.
- peep, on 02/11/2009, -1/+6What I would like to see is a color e-ink device with the screen the size of 2 comic pages. "The Marvel Reader"? newspapers, magazines, comics, books, and anything print could use it to distribute their content.
They could release a digital version of all there comics(plane none moving speaking) at a more realistic price then what their asking now, 50 cents to $1 I think is reasonable. $4 for 1/26th of a storyline is nuts. The way it is they can't just tell a good story anymore, everything has to be an "event to end all events" because they have to justify $4 for a funny book.
on-line "in-motion" comics? They dabbled with these things years ago, and they sucked. - moothemagiccow, on 02/11/2009, -1/+6I think Marvel should stick to what it does best. They keep pushing online comics that are flashier and more interactive than regular comics. The trouble is they don't suit the medium. Instead of trying to reinvent comics they should take a look at what made Penny Arcade or Mega Tokyo popular.
- renemartini, on 02/11/2009, -1/+5CRAP comics cost 4 bucks when I was a Xman comic whore they where 1.25 with special issues being 3 bucks. Damm no wonder they loosing people just collection a complete set of the xmen series is more than more console game.
- jaxomlotus, on 02/09/2009, -2/+6Awesome! I've already downloaded some Image Comics apps (Shadowhawk) and knowing that more comic companies are following suit totally makes my day.
- charliecharlos, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3Fail troll is fail
lrn2troll*
Hopefully you will understand my chanspeak and return there. - viper001, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3This has been done for years, going all the way back to the cut scenes from Maximum Carnage for the genesis/snes (done by marvel, coincidentally). Awesome to know they haven't abandoned this cool new medium, as it definitely has a future.
- benologist, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3You might not have noticed but pretty much everything's more expensive now than when we were kids...
- allisonaxe, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3blah. I like having physical copies of the comics I enjoy. there's something special about going to the comic store, and talking with the geek at the counter about new recommendations.....
- renemartini, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3its paper? What is it scented extra glossy. Its funny I can go to Vista Print and get my print stuff cheaper than back in my day while comics went up? Hell developing your pictures is cheaper. I know this is extreme examples but press has gown down in prices (yay outsourcing)
- bleutuna, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3I don't need them moving, but I'd love for them to just offer CHEAP .PDF downloads of all their books.
Comics cost too much. I'd pay $.99 for issues without a doubt. - UrinalPooper, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3Marvel's youtube channel had the first issue of Astonishing up but it looks like they took it down, here's a mirror...
Judge for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFVGTrP3Xfw - Tyrghast, on 02/11/2009, -1/+4The rest of us to continue downloading them illegally.
- bshock, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3I know plenty of people who've been reading digital Marvel comics for the last five years. But I don't know anyone who has or would ever pay for them.
- Kidddrunkadelic, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Dugg for Maximum Carnage. Loved the cut scenes.
- Gizza, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Apple is going to have to do something about that name soon.
- spookyttws, on 02/11/2009, -2/+4I get most of my comics via bit torrent (and read them via CDisplay) anyway. Speaking of which, it's technically Wednesday, the new Walking Dead #58 comes out today, I can't wait.
- Ford_Prefect2nd, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Finally... you had to know Marvel would be well ahead of DC on this one... there so much more progressive... have you seen DC's site?
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2This will be great, if the following happen:
- 2 dollars, which may seem expensive, but thats like half the price of most new comics, so it isn't that bad.
- Over 20 minutes. The Watchmen ones are, so I can see this happening. (Watchmen is a bit more of a packed story though, so who knows)
- Good production and voice acting. The Watchmen ones are so well done, but the solo guy doing all voices, including women, is just awful.
"“Motion comics,” he added, “require a much different process when compared to print.”"
Yeah, no *****. - decepticrat, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3I want to go to there.
- BobbyMC, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Wow, out of the blue. Totally should have happened years ago, but the fact it is happening at all now is amazing. Comics have been the one thing that were impossible to translate to computer screens, but if they build the software around it this new pillar might change it all.
- Meursault, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Great idea.
- immatellyouwhat, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2... in the pants.
- orthodoxDrew, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2awesome. they better not be overpriced.
- TSCheredar, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Yeah, anything non broadband is gonna be like pulling teeth.
- Wade, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Back in my day...
- TheWriteGuy, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2The Watchmen motion comic series really surprised me at how well it turned out. I'd love to see DC commission The Dark Knight Returns as a motion comic next.
- Portezbie, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2This is amazing news. I have been following the watchmen motion comics avidly and they are amazing. I really do hope these take off.
- Myztry, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Depends. They could use a vector format with bezier gradient shadings/blending/transparency/etc. Comics aren't photo realistic. Like flash animations.
If anything using lossy compressed bitmaps would only increase the size and decrease the quality. - punkcat, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2the watchman thing was cool, except the male narrated female voices
- empressofmetal, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2If these do this right, this motion-comic digital content will be great. For I Am Legend, they did a prequel motion-comic that was online and it was really good. I'm looking forward to this.
- TSCheredar, on 02/09/2009, -2/+4iSmell Fanboys app...uhh wait.
- gramathy, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1There are some independent publishers that already do something similar, like with Atomic Robo. It's a nifty idea.
- regs79, on 02/10/2009, -1/+2DC are doing this now with Watchmen and it's very awesome. Can't wait to see some Daredevil motion comics.
- Myztry, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2Comics are collectors items also. Without adding DRM as such, they could add digitally signed tags such as limited edition sequence number, artist autograph, 'golden ticket' all tied to an owner reference.
Copying would be trivial, but having an 'original' which you are tagged as owning would be near impossible. - reccaoconnor, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1Finally, something to do on the crapper at work besides surf digg.
- andeh37, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Thing is comics desperatley need a more youthful audience, unfortunatley comic book fans are getting older and there are limited new fans, and unless the industry does something eventually there will be no more new comics.
However, I'm not sure about digital distribution, part of the fun for me, is going to the comic store each week, picking up the new issues, trying to get hold of special issues, and variant covers, in essence, collecting them. I would hate for that to die, or be replaced by something 'gimmicky'.
How about we just get innovative people working on the comics, and not the same tired old garbage coming back again and again! - w3ber, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2name it iStore already! doh
- punkcat, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2smellivsion replaces television?
- paulshaqz, on 02/11/2009, -1/+1this is going to be awsome for iphone/ipod touch users aswell.
