- mkriss5681, on 10/19/2009, -0/+34I was lucky enough to grow up in the early 90's with the excellent X-Men and Spiderman cartoons, as well as the great DCAU Batman and Superman cartoons. As well as the great Spawn cartoon. It's a shame the newest batch of comicbook cartoons are so terrible. It's like they took a step back.
- nik15, on 10/19/2009, -0/+14I still prefer the cartoons in the 90s Marvel was putting out
- rewnick, on 10/19/2009, -0/+10Yeah! I grew up in this time as well. Man.. those spider-man and x-man cartoons still hold up today. They had such great story lines.. and the animation! (for x-men, anyway) was way ahead of it's time.
- BrandonJM, on 10/19/2009, -0/+8Decent write-up, and it's a good thing the reviewer didn't see Ultimate Avengers 2, that movie found a way to make space Nazis invading Africa boring.
- pagno, on 10/19/2009, -0/+6Next up:
Spiderman and Wolverine in Kingdom Hearts 3. - navster15, on 10/19/2009, -0/+5"As soon as they can work out how to replicate the live-action movies' ability to pick and choose what works, and as soon as the powers that be look for bolder ways to visualize those stories, then they'll be in good shape."
The author seriously needs to check out the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. It is an awesome reworking of the Spider-Man mythology that borrows from the original comics, the Ultimate reboot, and even the Sam Raimi movies. Too bad the show isn't getting the ratings it needs; it really is one of the better superhero cartoons I have seen. - 7m7uf, on 10/19/2009, -0/+4There was a contest at our Local Fox station. It and McD's teamed up to let kids pick the next cartoon on Fox. I won and out of the list of possibilities I picked X-men; best decision I ever made.
- zip000, on 10/19/2009, -0/+4You're not a very nice person are you?
- geoken, on 10/19/2009, -1/+5Have you watched them? The new Wolverine cartoon (I watch it with my son every Sunday) is as good, if not better, than the Xmen cartoon I used to watch in the 90's. And if you are willing to go beyond classic comics, Ben 10 is also a pretty good cartoon. Spectacular Spiderman is also really good.
I think you're just remembering the past with rose colored glasses because part of the lure of those cartoons was waiting a week and getting up on Saturday morning ready for a solid 4hrs of watching new episodes. This feeling obviously isn't as easy to reproduce when your an adult and not a care free child. I guess watching them with my son gives me a unique outlook. - duniyadnd, on 10/19/2009, -1/+4I actually thought the Ultimate Avengers was decent, though I didn't know what to expect to begin with and was guessing it was a kid's demographic they were aiming at.
- cesclaveria, on 10/19/2009, -0/+3when it comes to animation, I agree with you, but in general I think Marvel has better characters and stories than DC.
- bigteebo, on 10/19/2009, -0/+3Let's not forget the annoyance that was the Australian-accented Wolverine.
- samsmartjr, on 10/19/2009, -0/+3Probably one of the reason why Marvel Animation doesn't do well is because there's no crossover continuity with them. Comic books were better appreciated when individual titles made up the same universe. Marvel Films will soon be a blockbuster force by making their movies in one continuous universe. I don't see why they can't do the same thing with their cartoons, especially their direct-to-DVD movies. They don't even have to be the same storylines as the comics or the movies, but having everything in one continuity would really elevate the quality of all their animated movies.
- triferlinks, on 10/19/2009, -0/+3the hulk movie was the high end of the low.
- rewnick, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2That show is great. The animation is awesome, as well.. FYI, this is the guy that designed all of the characters:
http://gotcheeks.blogspot.com - He's got a great distinctive style. - SirLowKey, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2Dugg for:
"It's pretty much a straight adaptation of the first volume of a critically-acclaimed reworking of the origins of a franchise featuring some of their biggest names." - mlvassallo, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2http://xrayvision.today.com/files/2009/05/jim-lee- ...
That is done by Jim Lee... and those are X-Men, if you didn't notice. - leif777, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2I agree. The movies felt rushed and not sure if their demographic was aimed at early teens or the 21+ perma geeks like me. It's like they have a formula and they're just pumping out movies with no regard to to why they're doing it in the first place. Hulk vs.Wolverine had some great moments but they were week in comparison to some of the jaw dropping, breath holding, page gripping moments from the comic. It's half assed and very disappointing.
I think DC is doing a better job, although that's mostly due to Batman and Kevin Conroy. The voice acting in the DC movies is incredible compared to the just above average Marvel talent. The animation is at par with most of both universes with exception to Gotham Knight, in my opinion. I'm not saying I don't like that particular style, I just think it's tired. I'd love something new. - honestpen, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2Doctor Strange was good. Writer should've noted that.
- frepnog, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2"2. Jim Lee is a DC artist."
holy crap. Jim Lee is a COMIC BOOK artist that happens to currently work for DC. His redesign of the X-Men in the early 90's is ***** AMAZING and is what he is so well known for (aside from jumping ship from Marvel to Image and making a slew of well drawn but crappy comics). - T8erT0T, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2www.yourcrapshopblows.com/bury.htm
- RobotBuddha, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2They forgot to mention one of the main reasons Hulk Vs Wolverine was so good - deadpool! A deadpool who was well written, accurate to the comic characterization, and who really wound up stealing the focus whenever he was on screen.
- RGB0099CC, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1You were such a jerk, and can't even justify it because you were incorrect.
Sucks to be you. - LiquidShield, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1After reading everyones posts. The only thing that I can say is that when it comes to movies such as these that are aired on Cartoon network children are the demographic that they are pushing to. They are not taking into account that the older generation of comic book super hero fans who actually wish to watch these movies even though they are animated. That is exactly why they are creating the live action movies is target the older demographic of fans. If those of us who actually sat down, and watched these movies wanted higher quality animation. We need to let these companies know that there is a demographic of people out there that is quite large who want to watch animated version of the old comic book series shows such as spawn, batman, superman, and the plethora of other hero's out there. We want to see them in a higher aquality format of animation that is directed to older generation. Also on top of that they can portray the graphic novels they way they were ment to be done.
If anyone has ever read the Witch Blade series of comics the studio that created it actually released an Anime of it that is quite good. It is aimed at people of our demographic that want too see an Animated version of the comic book. - inactive, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1I about ***** my pants when I read they are coming out with a Ninja Turtles movie that mixes the 1987 series with the 2003 one.
- rewnick, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1I think his point was that they are all just OK... but when watched together, you want to dig your eyes out of their sockets with adamantium claws.
- Ragarnok, on 10/19/2009, -2/+3I will probably get downvoted to hell for this, but it looks to me (and this is a big generalization) that Marvel produces quantity and DC Comics produces quality
- awtripp, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1Aside from the 90s X-Men creating that atrocious character, Morph -- and Wolverine's bizarre relationship with him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ekKKzInSck
I don't remember the exact context of this, but that line from Wolverine always made me laugh. - AgoodChap, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1I love Ben 10. It's too bad the ***** up the movie though.
Wolverine and the X-Men is pretty good. I recommend watching it. - shadowman99, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1I'd like to see a return of the Diniverse for one of the DC features. The standalone DC features have been hit and miss for me. "Starcrossed" is still the high bar to beat IMHO.
I haven't seen a recent Marvel DVD animation that made me happy. Ultimates Vol. 1 and 2 (the comic series) was Millar and Hitch at their best. They made Hawkeye into an extremely cool character, Captain fighting Pym was amazing, everything was dead solid. Then come the lackluster video adaptations that threw away most of that cool material. I'm glad I rented instead f purchased. - T8erT0T, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1Bestest-worst theme intro ever.
- ShingoEX, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1Still needs Pryde of the X-Men.
- RobotBuddha, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1I believe you're off a generation. The pokemon generation is at the tail end of high school or in college now.
I feel really old. - steveoco, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1digg down
- jaimequin, on 10/19/2009, -1/+2These are kids movies guys. Todays kids are the Pokemon generation, how can you expect them to like what we had in the 80s and 90's if they are use to bright flashing lights and never ending fight scenes that make no sense. Face it, times are changing.
- palehorse864, on 10/19/2009, -1/+2I was about to say that they had better not throw the 90's X-men on there. Thankfully, they didn't.
I would have loved to see an adaptation of Jim Lee's character designs in the movies. I know spandex would look bad, but really I don't think the material is defined so you could use something that looks good and follows that design. The first two movies were good though, and I liked origins. - honestpen, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1how about you just die a violent death? luljk
- allisonaxe, on 10/20/2009, -0/+1Doctor Strange was terrible. a friend of mine got that and the crappy iron man animated movie for really cheap (i think they cost $6 altogether) and they were the worst things we've ever watched. the Doctor Strange movie was just awful, it was boring, and it just seemed to go on, and on, and on... it was so hard to care about what was happening because the animation was stiff, the voice actors sounded bored, and the characters all sucked.
- schuenator, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1These always looked terrible in commercials and ads. This just confirms what I already thought. I've heard DC's recent animated films are equally as bad. What happened to all that incredible talent like in the original Batman the Animated Series?
- hushpuppy20, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1Don't forget The Savage Dragon cartoon on USA. Another early-mid 90's cartoon that I thought was well done. Kind of funny, considering how bloody and Un-PC the comic was and still is.
- PartySized, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1He's a decent character and all, but Marvel keeps sucking Wolverine's **** these days. Too often, the plots focus on him to the exclusion and detriment of other more interesting characters. All of the live-action X-Men movies might as well had 'Wolverine' in the title.
- frepnog, on 10/19/2009, -1/+1Spawn was terrible. All they had to do was animate what McFarlane has drawn, but NOOOO they had to make it look like that poorly animated X-Men show (was was an ok cartoon, but DAMN I hate the look).
- frepnog, on 10/19/2009, -1/+1I'd buy that game.
In a ***** SECOND. There is NO WAY that Square couldn't make it awesome. - sdphost, on 10/20/2009, -1/+1Screw the writer
Doctor Strange was awesome!
Hulk VS - Woverine was very good,vs thor was ok.
Iron Man was good.
Next Avengers is alright
Ultimate Avengers 1 is good.
Ultimate Avengers 2 is both better and worse sadly. - BaphClass, on 10/19/2009, -5/+4Why are adults talking about things that 12 year old boys watch? Can we please get back to bacon, Glenn Beck, and zombies?
- KrayzieKyd, on 10/19/2009, -13/+11. This is about Marvel Animated feature films, not animated TV series.
2. Jim Lee is a DC artist.
3. First two what movies? X-Men? You didn't mention any films in your horrible comment.
4. If you liked Origins, then your opinion is invalid.
