- lazycat, on 07/05/2009, -0/+35"A common belief at the time was that the plague was spread by birds. There may have been a belief that by dressing in a bird-like mask, the wearer could draw the plague away from the patient and onto the garment the plague doctor wore. The mask also included red glass eyepieces, which were thought to make the wearer impervious to evil. The beak of the mask was often filled with strongly aromatic herbs and spices to overpower the miasmas or "bad air" which was also thought to carry the plague. At the very least, it may have served a dual purpose of dulling the smell of unburied corpses, sputum, and ruptured bouboules in plague victims." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consequences_of_the_B ...

Chilling. - yocouchdigga, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4I'm in but where do we get the outfit and mask?
- Bowie, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4The "Plague Doctor" is like the #1 most completely unexplored nightmarish character Hollywood hasn't touched. They are absolutely, unequivocably, mind-bendingly scary. It plays on so many angles, and has so many horror movie elements in it... death, masks, religion, blood, illness, you name it. I'm amazed Hollywood hasn't picked up on it.
I mean, ***** think about it. It's 1665, you're lying on a bed of your own filth, covered in flies, your skin covered in pus-filed pockets the diameter of golf balls, you cant breathe, you feel like you're drowning, and youre running a fever so high your hallucinating. Your family is already dead, and your neighbors make the mistake of having pity on you, so they call a plague doctor to come inspect you. The last thing you see before you die looks like a giant human-sized vulture with an enormous beak and red eyes prodding you with a goddamn stick, mumbling at you in Latin.
THAT is horror. - inactive, on 07/05/2009, -1/+4That made me smile.
Dugg. - raggles, on 07/05/2009, -0/+3Also, the clothing worn by the plague doctors served inadvertently to prevent the fleas that lived on rats (the real reasons for the spread of the plague) from getting to the doctors.
- darthjure, on 07/05/2009, -4/+7My french is a little rusty, but I think that's translated as "The Pest".

- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -9/+2My English is indeed quite rusty, but I am severely inclined to believe that it may also be translated as "You're Dumb".
