- Adamande, on 11/01/2007, -4/+218The bird didn't survive. Saying it did lessens the concept of the story. The Kiwi wanted to fly so much it was willing to die just to experience it once. Doing joyrides while landing safely in a lake strips the wish of its power and renders the movie dead and mindless.
- jpwhitmore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+198I love it, but it's really sad...
- xeroskill, on 10/22/2007, -11/+188such a cute movie, im believing that there is a lake at the bottom so its not sad anymore. he just has a long climb back up to do it again.
- kidhero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+148you hear a splat right before it cuts to the credits
- incu_vamp, on 11/05/2007, -0/+127a comment from uneasy silence really defined it for me,
"It makes you wonder if that’s really all we humans do: build up our own lives only to really enjoy it for a few short moments." - eggo, on 10/30/2007, -2/+123Interesting fact of the day: Kiwi fruit also cannot fly.
- nipterink, on 10/12/2007, -5/+120@AndreGerber: do you not remember when kiwi pulled all those tools out of nowhere? i'm certain a parachute is plausible :)
- jarvuss, on 10/12/2007, -3/+98Yes he cries, but is it because he knows what about to happen, or because he's happy to be flying??
- dinobot, on 10/27/2007, -5/+92... the rest is silence
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+83It was truly awesome, but truly sad. This guy deserves a medal for coming up with such a great storyline. At least the kiwi achieved his dreams.
- gregmo, on 10/18/2007, -1/+75That title really captures the video. That was really well done but honestly sad.
- banjokazooie, on 10/12/2007, -7/+71Wow. This video made me cry, it was so emotional. It's so sad, but in the end, he really flies... And his entire purpose has been fullfilled. He is finally happy. Thanks for posting this, it changed me.
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -10/+73kiwi's are better as fruit..
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -0/+61That was the saddest thing i've seen today. What a great way to end a day.
- iFrank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+65I don't know if the following statement challenges my masculinity, but it's totally necessary:
AAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. That was possibly the cutest thing I've seen in years! - AndreGerber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+60It cannot be a parachue, because he doesn't have a parachute on him at the time of falling. But it is an animation, after all. But it is a splat, otherwise the animator whould not have us looking at a blank screen. He would show us that he survived.
- pathy, on 10/14/2007, -2/+56... I really didn't think it'd do anything to me, but then the camera panned and all the trees... Argh. Sad. =(
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -9/+59a metaphor for the new zealand economy?
- Tyr86, on 10/14/2007, -4/+49Sounds like a a sack of potatoes hitting or a parachute deploying. Not a bird becoming one with the ground.
Of course, I'm not an expert at tossing animals that can't fly over cliffs and recording their sounds. - falloutsyndrome, on 10/14/2007, -0/+44I loved how he had tiny wannabe wings.
- Stephenishere, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47RIP Kiwi RIP :(
Great video : / but so freaking sad. - vagarach, on 10/14/2007, -0/+41The kiwi went out with a bang.....no emoness at all, no moping about and bitching about life.
- UCFartstudntJON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43A stunning visual metaphor of the plight of an animation/art major.
- WestDC, on 10/14/2007, -5/+45Oh, jeez. Overshare!
- gameguy43, on 10/12/2007, -8/+41i dont think it's intended to be sad at all. the kiwi follows and achieves his dream. its irrelevant whether he dies or not.
- nibble128, on 10/14/2007, -0/+31I wish I could digg it twice... what a bittersweet parody of life.
- djdarco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31Kiwis are my favorite fruit. It is sad that the majority of people that I meet don't even know what a kiwi is.
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32It's OK if you're hot :-)
- BladeDanger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32This animation is based on a Monty Python segment.
- hannahmar, on 06/11/2009, -3/+29So cute. I loved it. Awesome job to whomever made this.
Also, maybe it's just cause I'm on my period or something but this made me cry... hehe - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32Geez submitter, how about a spoiler-free title and description? We can discover these things by ourself.
Great animation though. - henri, on 10/14/2007, -0/+25I am not one of those emotional types. Normally, I would refrain from clicking a link with the 'cutest' anything in it.
I dugg this. - vagarach, on 10/14/2007, -0/+24So simplistic, but it conveys so much depth in meaning. That's genius is what I say.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25In London we saw some of the local students handing out free samples of Kiwi Fruit. So we went up to them and asked what kind of reaction they'd been getting.
They said that everyone hates them!
So we gently explained that you are supposed to _peel_ them first... - davecor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Agreed. That simple animation provoked more emotion in me than anything George Lucas has done. Lucas does great eye candy, but this is a simple story told elegantly.
In the world of animation, this was a haiku. - Pudwhack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22you don't need to peel a kiwi, you can eat the skin...true
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29Kiwi's are hard to peel, but worth the tasty innards.
- eN1X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. Damn...
- bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Reminds me of the wallace and gromit short (I believe one of their earlier or first one) where they take a vacation to the moon with the robot there. Then the robot is all denying them of the moon cheese and tries to attack them. But once he realizes they can give him a ride to earth where he can ski he tries to come with them back but fails. Then he makes his own skis and has fun on the moon till he stops working.
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17That was really impressive. I have an odd wish to see more of that lil' sucker. It almost creates a love for it. Master's thesis animation? They'd have better given him that degree.
- TwwIX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16sniff*
damn you for making me sad. ;~( - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16so what part of the world are you from to not have kiwi fruits?
(I am genuinley interested, I had no idea that they were apparently uncommon) - michaeljh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13This man speaks the truth. You have to shed at least one tear when you watch it. :`(
- Gamblor24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13wow, this guy really knows how to do animation. Captured the emotion perfectly. Good Job.
- mickstephenson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Saddest animation ever: Futurama season 4 episode Jurassic Bark
- Scagli3tti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@ xeroskill
I suppose this isn't the best time to tell you about surface tension... :(
R.I.P. Kiwi - carmelia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I completely agree with that point.
Everyone is talking about realizing our dreams, but what I see is a bird who can't adapt to its handicap and learn to appreciate life from another point of view.
Still, I love the courage of that bird and it breaks my heart everytime watch the clip. - itsthemechanic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13You fool. You should kick for good, and find other ways to get your thrills. I've been through the same treadmill... Depression, raves, E, K, base, acid, more depression, shrink, anti-depressants, etc. etc.
The way out of it is : Kick. Completely. First the illegal drugs, then the legal ones you are using as a crutch to stay sane (antidepressants etc.). Find other more useful things to fill your life -- learn a new skill, a new sport, learn to ride motorcycles, take up base jumping, or whatever. Find a decent woman that keeps you sane. Live happily everyafter. It worked for me.
But if you think you can keep using you are deluding yourself. You are just running your brain chemistry ever further into the ground. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12his other animation is pretty good also, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNu8u_Kpa00
Not as good animation but is still funny/messed up -
