- ShoggothDreams, on 09/30/2008, -1/+43Ummm... is the poster unfamiliar with who Kenneth Brannagh *is*? You somehow DON'T think that a critically acclaimed award winning actor/director/producer is *good enough* for a superhero movie?!?!? What am I missing here??? Hiring hacks over talent is what gives us Daredevil, Catwoman, Fantastic Four, and the Punisher. That's what happens when you DON'T hire Whedon for Wonder Woman, Smith for Daredevil, and I suspect, if you don't hire Brannagh for Thor...
- AlteniaTT, on 09/30/2008, -1/+34Kenneth Branagh is the *****, and I'd probably not see a Thor movie were he not involved.
- enronias, on 09/29/2008, -1/+30Or . . . YES
- Rollic, on 09/29/2008, -3/+28Is Branagh going to cast himself as Thor? Because he made a GREAT fifty-year-old Hamlet.
- diggduggDOOM, on 09/30/2008, -0/+22Why are people upset about this? At least it's not Uwe Boll.
- Dreamscar, on 09/30/2008, -1/+23Kenneth Branagh is quite an amazing filmmaker. Anyone who's seen his adaptation of Henry V can attest to that. His a filmmaker who has a passion for making actual films, and a dedication to the art of cinema. Sorry it's not someone like Michael Bay or Brett Ratner who you all may be more familiar with, but I'd much rather see a Kenneth Branagh version of Thor than one done by one of them
- AmyVernon, on 09/29/2008, -1/+22Why do I see this as Thor speaking in Shakespearean couplets?
- pitchblack16, on 09/29/2008, -0/+19I think the original concept of having the movie based on Asgard would be awesome, but who knows what will happen.
- Lucas123, on 09/29/2008, -4/+17Thor ... the movie? Help!
- bubba9999, on 10/01/2008, -0/+12Thank you. I was losing hope that someone making comments had actually seen something he's been involved with. The genre is a little unusual for Brannagh, but perhaps he wants to expand his horizons. He has more than enough talent to pull it off.
- Beatmiser, on 10/01/2008, -0/+12People who are wailing 'Nooooooooooooooooooooo' at this really need to stop. His directorial work is stunning, from his envisioning of Hamlet in the '90's to his recent adaptation of As You Like It. I have no doubt that he could translate this into something amazing.
- onlysc, on 09/29/2008, -2/+13thor... see adventures in babysitting
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -4/+14As long as I don't have to watch it...
- magicbullets, on 09/30/2008, -2/+12I'd like to direct Kenneth Brannagh.
- Akaziel, on 10/01/2008, -0/+10Yeah. There's not much that I can say about this that hasn't already been said in the comments so far. Kenneth Branagh can bring nothing but class and passion to this project. He will do amazing things, and make it a good if not GREAT film. So I'm gonna say buried for "Umm How About Nooo...."
- browwiw, on 09/30/2008, -0/+9Though...Thor is often depicted in the comics speaking in Old English rhyme. Brannagh could probably pull that off without it sounding stupid as hell.
Personally, I look forward to this. Experimentation is good. - hoodoodave, on 09/30/2008, -0/+9Before, I knew it was probably going to be *****. With Branaugh, we can at least count on it being interesting.
- Threlly1, on 09/30/2008, -0/+8Well, if you look up some of the stuff Branagh has been involved with in the last few years on IMDB, the one about the 'Final Solution' springs to mind, he can actually write and he can actually direct.
The problem with American treatments of European mythology is they come off sounding a bit "Robin Hood - Men In Tights".
Whereas, Kenneth might just try to give the 'thee's & thou's" a bit of serious thought & authenticity.
He's currently getting brilliant reviews in a Chekov piece at this very moment.
I presume an American producer will be part of the package and will ensure all the Superhero mayhem will be on note. - bubbameister33, on 10/01/2008, -0/+7Dude has done more tv, stage and cinema than you have.
- seattlegirluw, on 09/29/2008, -3/+10Is he really THAT bored?
- Cenobite, on 10/01/2008, -0/+7Buried for ripping on the Branagh. What the *****, buddy?
- philomatic, on 02/08/2009, -0/+7Branagh is one of the more talented people in the biz. What's with the hate? I swear people just need something to cry about.
- krisscofield, on 10/01/2008, -1/+8Oh, grow up. Are you familiar at all with his work? Kenneth Branaugh is awesome. He's a phenomenal actor and a great writer. Is it because he's an actor? Favreau made Iron Mon. Look how that turned out. I find actors turned directors tend to make great films. e.g. Clint Eastwood.
- spookycheddar, on 10/01/2008, -0/+6How about.. i dont know, that's fine with me? Brannagh's got talent and who is really all that invested in the "Thor" character anyway?
- philhatesyou, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5***** you for even mentioning Kenneth Brannagh in the same context as Uwe Boll.
- Th1rte3n, on 10/01/2008, -1/+6Terrible website with terrible writers.
- brundlefly76, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5why is everyone so anti-Thor?
give Mjolnir a little love. - PhilipClark, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4I say thee YAY!
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4I've actually already read that script and it's a really boring turkey. No wonder they are looking at Branagh for it. I hope that is NOT the script they make, but I agree with you that an all Asgard take would be cool. :(
- ZenMojo, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4Agreed. Thor left me cold, especially with the Asgardian pitch. But Branagh has a talent for taking unwieldy period language and converting it into a story we can understand. Now, about his action sequences....
...
No, seriously, someone tell me about one. - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5"More hammer with less art." :)
- plkrtn, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4Of all the directors, this is a really great choice. Straight out of left field and with a respect for the original, original source materials.
This pick turns a potential disaster of a movie into something that might actually work. You could always get Brett Ratner in ffs. - neseus, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4amen!
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3I think he could pull off something really interesting with this if given the creative freedom.
Yes, all the way. - mediaphile, on 09/30/2008, -3/+6Because you're naive. It's not like the only thing Branagh has ever done is Shakespeare. And even so, the Marvel universe could do with a little sophistication given its history.
- Heywoodj, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Old low norse shouldn't be a streach.
There is a possibility of this being very cool. - Gulenalf, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Actually, I think he is a great choice as a director. Especially for his role in classic theater and historical theater. The problem in this picture is that it is coming from Marvel. Marvel has taken the wonderful, historically-rich God Thor and turned him into this blond-haired, blue-eyed, dip...
If Thor is done from the perspective of the Eddas and or the Sagas and historical documents, then I am ALL for it! Heck, I would go see it three times at evening prices :) Don't believe me? I will post pictures of it :) - browwiw, on 09/30/2008, -2/+5Wait a minute...Will Smith as Captain America? Initially I am perplexed by this choice, but I do realize that they retconned the Marvel timeline to include a "Tuskegee" Captain America. That is, the Army experimented on black soldiers before they put Steve Rogers through the super soldier process (yes, I am a Marvel nerd). So, they have a plausible adaptation bridge, there.
Also, Will Smith is an honestly nice guy. That's why his rap music sucked and he can't play a jerk (re: Hancock). I've always said that Captain America would have to be played by a person who could both pull off the physique and acting abilities/personality. Will Smith meets those criteria. I - V3n0M, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Besides the Shakespearean films, he directed "Dead Again" very well! Very contemporary, very suspenseful, it's a good flick!
- razorsedge555, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2He can run around the set and yet "Cry havoc/and let loose the dogs of war" like he did in Henry V
- Swarms, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2A lot of people, myself included, really like superhero movies. Feel free to stay home though, I promise we won't make you go see another.
- plkrtn, on 10/01/2008, -1/+3EXCUSE ME?
American comic-book character?
This character existed 3000 years before the United States were even formed. - inactive, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2very true.
"Dead Again" was great. - ICSU, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2Is that how low we got with here?
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2my thoughts exactly. I like the idea of him doing a hero movie, I think he'd add an interesting dynamic and come up with something original, unlike the typical superhero movie formula. Or he could have fail on an epic scale, which I wouldn't mind seeing either. gogogo
- enantiodromia, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2Dead Again was the shiet
- Lucas123, on 10/01/2008, -2/+4Hey, I have no quarrel with Thor. He swings a mighty hammer, but I'm at the end of my rope with these comic books, cartoons and video games being made into movies because Hollywood lost most of its creativity somewhere near the end of the 1980s.
I mean, eventually, it's going to come to the point when they even make things like Speed Racer and Transformers into films. Then what? - taylorr05, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2Totally agree. Kenneth Brannagh is fantastic at what he does, which has always been adaptations. I seriously loved his take on Frankenstein because it was so literal to the book and times. His adaptations of Hamlet and As You Like It were phenomenally beautiful. The poster of this article seems far more testosterone driven and sounds like he'd be happier if Uwe Bol directed an already shoddy premise for any modern adaptation.
I am ok with this. I was also ok with Ed Norton's performance as Bruce Banner. This poster just seems pretentious and has an overly masculine fixation. Kinda like Uwe Bol. - inactive, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2rAmen!
- kwazyhulk, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2If he brings his Henry V mojo, I'm all for it.
