- robotbloodparty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+61Looks photoshopped to me.
- Aliasing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+52Anyone else think from the desc it was the actor doing the painting, I was all ready to consider him the awesomest actor ever.
- TheFoundry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33No, it was 3 hours if you read the caption. He just sped it up to a 5 minute video. I wouldn't go around calling people "idiots" when you're more oblivious.
I've never seen anyone do a "freehand" sketch in Photoshop. I think Bert Monroy should do a piece on it. :) - 0x0000ff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24a computer
- miketrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I would call it impressive either way. It's interesting to see him change his mind over and over.
- oslointhesummer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I doubt it.
I'm betting it's a big wacom, else he's insane skilled. - Nick22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Its because its just convienient to be able to click on the thumbnail on digg and have the video play right there.
- fuzzboxer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Why not just link to the god damn YouTube video?
- nonesupplied, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Sorry for comment abuse, direct youtube link:

Also, I agree with miketrash. Art is more than just the product, it's the journey. - chopcow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@ marcuschi
Yeah, it's a common misconception among those who don't draw that the eraser is just as important a tool as the pencil. Try to imagine the eraser as a "white pencil" and the pencil as a "black pencil".
The basic idea is to sculpt the drawing, then slowly fill in the details as you go. You can see how he roughs in the basic shapes, then slowly brings it up to completion.
You may have seen someone draw a detailed drawing without roughing in the shapes first, but this is usually a show-off who has done the same drawing so many times that they have memorized how to draw what they are drawing.
BTW...just in case nobody knows, this guy/girl probably used a Wacom tablet to draw this picture. I would be very suprised if he did this with a mouse. - cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"I can tell from the pixels, and from having seen a number of 'shops in my time"
I love that line :) - Gregero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Here is an animated gif showing how close he got it, rotating between his image, overlaying the original photo, then only to the photo and back again. Amazing how dead on he got it.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So am i the only person that thinks this guy could lead a career in drawing celebrity fake porn...? yes? no? .....yessss
- oslointhesummer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Once he got to the end and I had to just stare at it, I started to get creeped out.
Too realistic for me.
At this point, you could just take a photo of him and smudge it a little to get the same result. - Azimuth1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd have been proud of what he'd done after 30 seconds.
- InvertedDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ok im sorry im a drawing nub, but to do this quality work the artist needs a reference in front of him right? he can't do this out of memory unless he were that savant guy right?
- ShakeWell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5oh no.... i got dugg down!!!!!
"whine about being dugg down*
you nerd - iShouldveKnown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2after watching him work on a tablet, I wonder what his canvas and charcoal work looks like.
"amazing" is an understatement. I thought that guy that does the cars in MS Paint was amazing...
I wonder how many layers this guy went through... - dard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Any well trained traditional artist with some experience is more than capable of making a portrait like this. Photoshop is just another tool, it doesn't really make you a better artist, just makes things a bit easier, cheaper and faster to produce digital art. Throwing that tree backdrop in the end was a bit cheesy, especially it appeared more low res than the portrait.
- tyywebb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Staring at John Locke in the eye for that long puts the fear of god in my soul.
- erietta, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1impressive stuff, Have been lucky myself to see real life demo of talented illustrator http://jamesburke.deviantart.com/ do his stuff with photoshop and wacom. He uses an average size tablet and has mastery over layer pallette too.
- TheKingInYellow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@nomad
well, no. if the painting took 3 hours to make then all he has to do is talk over it for 3 hours saying what it is he is doing, what brushes/settings he is using, etc. where do you get 30 hours from? if he made the painting in 3 hours then that's how long it would take to explain it (if not less). - Volatile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He's most certainly using a tablet. Tablets are awesome for any form of digital art, and they make nice mousepads too. :)
- garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What tool can be used to record Photoshop like that?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is an awesome speed painting of Locke. Very cool. Here's an even better speed painting (if you can imagine) of Scarlett Johansson. Direct link: http://latestvideo.freemoviemall.com/s709/latestvideo3362.htm
- darlyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I literally clapped to myself after seeing this ... its perfectly awesome.
- kenman345, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1props. this guy is awesome. definitely inspiring. he seems to have a lot of experience. and a wacom or whatever it is called. those things are great. think i might pick one up now.
- nomad9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then it'd probably take 30 hours.
- ToyYoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i love to have that as my background
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, that was really cool to watch. No matter how long it took, the end result was really detailed and great. There's more animation stuff like that at http://www.FreeMovieMall.com
- SLH06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought this was the John Locke of the 1600's until I further read the title.
- TheKingInYellow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how about a 3 hour video with detailed voice over for everyone who would like to learn?
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great video.... but blatant and lame blog spam
- marcuschi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That was wicked amazing. But since I'm not an artist, can someone explain to me why he kept drawing and then erasing and then redrawing over what he just drew, instead of doing it in one shot? Is this a technical style or is this a way to achieve depth or something?
- joergkurtwegner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you like that you should check-out some other YouTube speed-painting artists. I have started a playlist

No more 'uncanny valley' like than a Rembrandt or a Da Vinci. - Ender17, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2yes, I did too
- ZanCakes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@ishouldveknown
It honestly depends...
I am currently in my second year for visual arts and have seen the work of Communication Design students who cross over from computer rendering to painting or drawing. It's usually not a very smooth transition.
The materials are extremely different, especially oil paint, which might as well be a foreign language - in fact doing an oil painting with this sort of detail and realism could take well over a month.
This guy, however, definitely knows the principles of drawing, shading and color theory - my guess is he started with drawing and painted and moved onto computers - its a lot more time and cost affective.
- rnnbob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1no way he used one of those drawing pads.
- ihate2reg4u, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Yes, I can tell by the pixels and by having seen many photoshops before.
- xenoploid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yeah, 3 hrs 5 min is NOT fast.
- imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Looks more like Jean-Luc Picard to me.
- nevas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1For a moment I felt that painting look alike Steve Job's. What do you say guys?
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6I always see this comment in the video section here. What difference does it make where you watch the video? It's not like you have to pay money to see it. Are you guys that obsessed with youtube that you get outraged when you have to watch a free video somewhere else?
- FlapJaw, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Did he use a mouse?
- vann, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Yep. This is less cool. :(
- svzy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Welcome to the uncanny valley.
- sally00, on 10/12/2007, -11/+0oh no......... she cussed!!!!
