- Andechs, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38No, propaganda is information that is disseminated to advance a cause. Whether its true or not.
- strangeguitar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33Even if elements of it are true, they're overblown and satired in order to be made to seem completely ridiculous. This is the mark of propaganda.
- matthewsr2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26i think it's important to remember that cartoons weren't marketed at children, as they are today. adults would go to the movies and see one of these walt disney cartoons either as the main show, or as an advert before the show (sort of like the little pixar flicks that they put in front of their movies).
it'd probably be alarming to know how much these helped out the war effort. . . - Quickbreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Propaganda, whether true or not, does one thing: It appeals to people's emotions as the primary reason to support some action.
- jessestay, on 01/21/2009, -2/+26It is propoganda. The Nazis never told the story of Sleeping Beauty in that light and the sick boy being taken by the government was way out of proportion. They only took the sick if they were to the extreme of things such as having polio. It is entertaining and drove hate towards the Nazis nonetheless, so I'm sure it served its purpose.
- bipto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24I've never seen this one, but the Disney studio practically became a subsidiary of the War Dept during WWII and turned out lots and lots of very well done propaganda. Awesome find.
- rolex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Amazing... dumbest ever Digg comment right here folks. Get it while it's steaming hot...
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17So just like real life, Hitler was briefly wedged up German's ass.
- blu64, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19i shouldn't even bother to take the time to reply to you. butt... you are a f#$%ing idiot. and you have no idea what you are talking about.
- Fly1m1, on 10/12/2007, -29/+43It's not propaganda if it's true.
- Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13These WWII propaganda films are not banned; you can buy them together in a limited run box set titled "Walt Disney Treasures: The War Years." It's hosted by Leonard Malton and is very well done.
These also included rare films for the Mexican and Canadian government during WWII.
To see Dopey pouring oil on a pond to kill mosquitoes that may carry malaria is sobering - as well as Pluto saving fat from the frying pan to make ammo. All of these films are a must see and, I believe really capture some piece of how it was like to live during that war. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12yeah...note also how disney productions used to involve real ART, drawing all those cells for the animation.....unlike the cheap, synthetic art churned out by computers today.
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Wow that is creepy. If I saw this as a kid I would have nightmares forever.
- Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12very good find.....whats even more amazing is that it's still up on youtube. Disney is insane about copyrights.
- Protonz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I wonder if some day people will look back on FOX news the way we are looking at these Disney cartoons.
- namgge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I find it rather ironic that the cartoon talks about the cartoon talks about the German government brainwashing kids, when this cartoon is doing it to young children as well.
- LarzHunter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@waterdragon
I'm sorry, but anyone who makes parallels between state and public sponsored genocide by the Nazis, and what is going on in Iraq with our troops, including the few that may have violated the Geneva Conventions, is an utter fool.
I've spoken with survivors of concentration camps, as well as soldiers from that era that fought the Nazis, and some that served Germany. The recent violations of the Geneva Conventions by a few Americans does not compare with the social acceptance of genocide by the people of Germany in WWII, or represent the intent of the majority of troops currently serving in Iraq.
Your statement is made out of ignorance, and is itself a result of propaganda.
And no, I'm not a Bush supporter. I'm just well-read. - reldren, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12@DevilsRejection
No apostrophe necessary, idiot. - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You guys should seek out the Warner Bros WWII propaganda cartoons. If you think the Disney ones were bad (and they're not really, quite tastefully done), the WB ones were just plain racists. Especially the Bugs Bunny one against the Japanese.
- DROB003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I was totally unaware that these existed....dugg
- Lullaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I own the DVD and can say that Leonard Maltin does an introduction to the short in which he talks about the grimness of the work (especially the end), but this shouldn't be buried in the desert because people think it's best to forget.
- setec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Its hardly fair to analyze these films over 60 years later and cal them racist films. Anything that would have helped our soliders and sailors win the war was worth the effort. The Japanese were ruthless towards our POWS and we shouldn't try to judge now when so much time is past. You had to kind of be there.
- tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10And a baseball bat is pretty comfortable if your crotch gets to know it. I'm sure someone here can show you if you want...
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Shhh! It's OK we do it.
http://www.nsa.gov/kids/home.cfm - drummerjed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Only if you are a moron who doesn't like civil liberties and the right to educate yourself. then sure. Nazi piece of *****.
- Koopa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wow, is there a way to ban this guy from digg?....Or at least give him a nice swift kick in the nuts?
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've seen this before. Not banned.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The song 'Der Fuehrer's face' was recorded by Spike Jones and his city slickers, along with other favorites of the era, like 'cocktails for two', Chloe', and 'you always hurt the one you love'
But the version in the disney cartoon was performed by others, and included characters with different accents.
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I remember seeing that one on TV many years ago. They censor stuff that isn't considered politically correct nowadays.
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It still doesn't get shown on TV. Many old Disney cartoons that are not war related, but still might upset sensitive modern viewers, also don't get shown on TV.
- bob_the_alien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Dang, didn't know Disney put out films like this, was very powerful though, I can see this doing it's job very well.
- Jabby81, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I love that song. catchy
- neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And do what exactly? They already own everything!
- mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Social engineering is acceptable as long as it suits your own ideology.
When I was in high school english class I was force-fed things like Ellie Weisel's Night, 1984, Animal Farm, and so on, as a transparent attempt by society to not repeat the mistakes of the prior generation. The messages were fine with me. But I didn't like being brainwashed. English class should be about literature, not about social engineering. - Angelus2k6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hitler was a naughty naughty man - Southpark
- jefferson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Propaganda filled for the Allies! Why would this ever be banned it does not shed a good light on the Nazi Party...........your story title is misleading
- swirvi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You've wasted your life.
- Koopa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Got to hell, nyrol--you can meet your buddy Hitler there, too.
- setec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4kraussm: He is right. Very right. Hollywood supported World War II greatly but now all they do is complain.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7It's not really banned anymore, then?
- reldren, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8You're a retard. Go jump off a bridge.
- BT-Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3disney is ofcourse responsible for our retarded copyright laws.
- Coreguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this video is indeed creepy....
especially the scene when the child expressed sorry about the rabbit eaten by the wolf, Nazi's faces on the wall transformed....I felt terrified...
In World War II, many innocent children received evil education then became Nazi, in German, Japan and Italy...
It's a tragedy....The history should not be erased - Coreguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6are you joking?
I wanna bury you to the deepest hell, not only bury your comment.... - krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This video really hits parents with the scene where Hans gets sick, and the Nazis threaten to take him away. Of course, they wind up taking him anyway by brainwashing him, but the visual of the mother-child relationship is compelling.
Also, Hitler like big girls. :) - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah the 'Old Disney' has been swept under the rug. The 'Song of the South' characters still exist in
Disneyland in the Fronteerland, they are named different. -
