- rtaibah, on 07/15/2009, -3/+1078Well Google isn't exactly David...
- DiscoLando, on 07/15/2009, -3/+674Right, it's more like Goliath vs. the Hulk.
- snagglefoof, on 07/15/2009, -7/+518I think this terribly misrepresents what Google is doing with Chrome OS.
- nabe, on 07/15/2009, -4/+421Google annonces a future OS, almost no info about it, not even screenshots... MS gets kicked in the nuts?
- snafflepaffle, on 07/15/2009, -7/+337I don't get it. This is funny for some reason other than a kick in the balls? Does it have anything to do with the situation?
Didn't think so. - RoroCo, on 07/15/2009, -8/+197Yeah, but Goliath vs a bigger Goliath doesn't make for a witty cartoon. Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
- killerhammy, on 07/15/2009, -8/+133meh
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -9/+127Little dude's gonna get his ass kicked.
- wontstoptalking, on 07/15/2009, -0/+110Dugg for the mental images that sentence provokes.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/15/2009, -8/+116Personally, I find the whole MS / Google thing amusing.
Microsoft has a bad reputation among many for its past business practices. Years ago, the company made some unfortunate decisions, and used their position in the industry to succeed in other segments of the industry that might have been unfair to the competition. This left us in a world without Netscape, RealAudio, and with Internet Explorer as one of the leading browsers. The IE situation isn't great, but Netscape and RealAudio were horrible.
Google, on the other hand, is an advertising giant which maintains a decent reputation by providing people with "free" services. They've bought up advertising companies, like DoubleClick, and they run monster websites like YouTube, Gmail, and of course, Google search. They routinely collect information about the things you like and do on the internet, and probably maintain a large collection of data on just about everyone who uses their services. People leave this fact buried deep in Google's many TOS agreements, since aside from personally targeted advertising, they don't notice it much.
I find it funny because Microsoft has a much worse reputation at this point, but Google is in a much better position to do evil things with your information. Very likely, they'll continue to collect piles of personal information about people with their new OS, but people won't care because they've subsidized it and made it free by agreeing to let Google do so.
I don't doubt that someday Google will slip up, and people will turn on them immediately, but when that day might be is hard to say as long as the free stuff remains decent and the invasiveness of their data mining remains invisible. - duckless2nd, on 07/15/2009, -3/+107Don't think anyone can claim google just took out Microsoft.
- Megor, on 07/15/2009, -3/+101Hype OS is more like it
- Exhibitionist, on 07/15/2009, -1/+95Actually, the diagram is drawn roughly to scale. Microsoft's 2009 Q1 revenue was 15 billion vs. Google's 5.5 billion. Almost three times the size.
- wejmahtin, on 07/15/2009, -3/+67Not to mention it's not even their OS... It's yet another linux distribution...
- rohit275, on 07/15/2009, -1/+48Since when is Chrome OS directly competing with Windows?
- ohplease, on 07/15/2009, -3/+47Oh BOY someone's making a Linux Distro!
GAME CHANGER. - snafflepaffle, on 07/15/2009, -1/+39Most of the time political cartoons are germane to the situation being made fun of in some way. This one makes no sense. Is Google really a David? Seems like they're one of the largest corporations in the world to me. Why does Google kick Microsoft in the balls? WTF does that have to do with anything???
- thcobbs, on 07/15/2009, -2/+40But isn't 6*0(evil) still 0 evil?
Or is Google lying to me? - subliminalurge, on 07/15/2009, -0/+32Depends on if Goliath had a pair of scissors.
- snafflepaffle, on 07/15/2009, -0/+32This doesn't make for a witty cartoon either.
- FutureGuy, on 07/15/2009, -4/+35And he better run before the other guy gets up.
- 17999, on 07/15/2009, -9/+36Very little has been written about the possibility of Google becoming annoying... probably not to Microsoft levels, but to some extent.
Anyone who thinks the sun shines out their collective arse, try using Chrome as your browser, exclusively. Sure, it's faster than the other two, but there's boatloads it won't do (e.g. Google Friggin Toolbar) and a lot of sites won't take it.
Nonetheless, nice to see a little Godzilla/Mothra action at the top to keep MS somewhat honest. - dancandigg, on 07/15/2009, -6/+31This is not an XKCD comic!
- jwanderson, on 07/15/2009, -0/+24One kick to the pills doesn't mean the game is over.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -3/+25wat
- snagglefoof, on 07/15/2009, -2/+23For one thing nobody knows anything about Chrome OS.
For another thing Chrome OS is for netbooks.
Besides that there's no way to tell whether Chrome OS will succeed or not. It's way to early to be saying this will be the Microsoft killer. After all, Linux really has never been (and probably will never be) a Microsoft killer. - SuperMoses, on 07/15/2009, -5/+23I don't get it.. is Bill Gates the google guy?
- jack2454, on 07/15/2009, -2/+20you must be commenting...bad comment...
- Naieve, on 07/15/2009, -0/+18Actually, they are kicking other versions of Linux in the balls more than Microsoft.
- foofoobee, on 07/15/2009, -3/+21But even the story doesn't make sense here. It implies that the OS will be the one shot that takes out MS. But what about the other platforms that the two have been competing over for a long time now? (search, office suite, etc). Google has been kicking MS for a while now.
- davidwmfc, on 07/15/2009, -1/+18if that means it sucks ass, I agree
- johndavidjack, on 07/15/2009, -2/+17Digg loves religion when it's used to bash Microsoft, got it.
- Drax0n, on 07/15/2009, -4/+19In the OS market they are david.
- bnorman, on 07/15/2009, -3/+18wut
- odnaryperson, on 07/15/2009, -2/+17hah... i want to see the next pane of the comic
- ThermiteTerrace, on 07/15/2009, -2/+16Will Google Chrome have pop-up ads accompanying your login??
- VoidOfsPg, on 07/15/2009, -9/+23Why is Google so small compared to MS? I think it's a pretty fair fight if you ask me.
- grantmoore3d, on 07/15/2009, -0/+14Why don't we wait until it's released?
- frequentFlyer, on 07/15/2009, -1/+15Yes. And it will track every single keystroke, mouse movement and website ever visited EVAR.
- Latentsage, on 07/15/2009, -0/+13You didn't even say what f(x) was. It could be something like x+9001. Not to mention expressing it as a limit has no purpose unless f(x) has an asymptote or break at x. You are certainly not a nerd.
- cygnus2112, on 07/15/2009, -5/+18Just FYI.. since Chrome's release, Firefox has gained 2.91% market share, Opera has lost .01% market share, Safari has gained 2.07% market share, IE has lost 6.37% market share, and Chrome has gained a whopping.. 1.74% market share.
Yes, 1.74% market share, total, in 4 quarters. That's almost as popular as vomit, fanboys. - NathanielJ, on 07/15/2009, -3/+16wet
- camilos007, on 07/15/2009, -3/+16Until the Google OS is released and kicks Windows' ass this is just stupid.
- PhairOh, on 07/15/2009, -5/+18A better analogy would be Achilles vs Hector.
- Drax0n, on 07/15/2009, -10/+22and six times the evil.
- Presbyterian, on 07/15/2009, -1/+13No, when Google Video was crap they just bought out the competitor.
- PhilMoskowitz, on 07/15/2009, -2/+14I don't see google doing anything but powering a couple netbooks and hand helds. They're no masters with the gui themselves.
- alexdemers, on 07/15/2009, -1/+12I'm fairly positive that Microsoft will still lead after years of competition. Remember, this is for mostly netbooks and "internet usage". Microsoft Windows can do anything (well, mostly); games, multimedia production, business work etc. I wouldn't say that Google Chrome OS is a threat to Microsoft Windows since it specifically targets netbooks and internet usage mainly. Yes, it's the first of it's kind for only that purpose, but it really limits the capabilities of the netbooks, netbooks can still do more than "internet usage".
My two cents. - 4AntiStupid, on 07/15/2009, -1/+12Google is long past being the small, young challenger company.
- NJank, on 07/15/2009, -3/+14people contend Google is an internet search monopoly. Maybe, depending on how much market share you need to have to be considered a monopoly.
So, could this be Google using its (alleged) monopoly in one market to 'unfairly compete' in another? I.e., offering a free OS to it's current userbase... -
