- Wandel, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2Geohasing isn't geocaching.
- AmaDaden, on 05/21/2008, -1/+14It's an excuse for an adventure. The geohash gives you a place to go. The date and dow opening ensure randomness. Using parts of where you are all ready mean it's not gonna be that far so it's a reasonable and possible trip. Didn't you ever feel the need to just go and just didn't have a destination? Geohashing gives you one.
http://wiki.xkcd.com/geohashing/Main_Page - DivisibleByZero, on 05/21/2008, -7/+29What's not to get? It's an XKCD comic. Therefore it must be dugg to the front page, regardless of its individual quality.

The tool can be used to coordinate meetups with other xkcd readers without actually contacting them. Put in a date, and if the stock market has opened that day it will give you coordinates. When you click the map in your general area, it will give you the exact coordinates of where that meetup should happen in your area.
As long as it's not a lake.- MrCalifornia, on 05/21/2008, -0/+5from the same page:
The official xkcd meetups happen every Saturday afternoon at 4:00 PM. If the coordinates for your area are in the ocean, a military base, or somewhere otherwise unreachable, that meetup is of course postponed. Unless, of course, you own a boat, are a soldier at said military base, or are James Bond. If you can, record who's there, take pictures, and post them here. - analogkid01, on 05/21/2008, -0/+3THE COMPUTER KNOWS, DWIGHT!!

- ucffool, on 05/21/2008, -3/+17Blag entry: http://blag.xkcd.com/geohashing/2008/05/21/geohash ...
Wiki: http://wiki.xkcd.com/geohashing/
People are springing up for each quadrant on the wiki and saying if they will participate. Basically, assuming your quadrant after Friday morning's stock market open comes up with a location that is actually accessible, people will gather on Saturday, 4pm for an impromptu meetup (Friday/Sat/Sun location is the same).
I'm already tracking the NW Denver quadrant: http://wiki.xkcd.com/geohashing/NW_Denver
I don't know how long this will be fun, but hey, I needed something to do this weekend.- Rocketman1882, on 05/21/2008, -0/+3Hah I'm tracking NW Denver too.
- samcrut, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1Quadrant? So there's 4 sectors covering the world?
- martinezah, on 05/22/2008, -0/+0Strictly speaking, the locations over the weekend are not the same, just the dow stays constant. The date, and thus the hash, changes for each day, so if you're planning to meet up this weekend, make sure you calculate Saturday's coordinates, not Friday's.
- leerayIG88, on 05/21/2008, -9/+2what is geohashing??
- halleyscomet, on 05/21/2008, -7/+1That's odd. Why did this one take so long to reach the front page? Are the haters getting organized into bury parties?
- DivisibleByZero, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2Yeah, but we all meet up at 32.23412335 -122.125141 and bury together
- omgJOHN, on 05/21/2008, -44/+44What the ***** is this? This isn't even a comic. It's ultimate nerd wankery.
I don't understand why XKCD keeps getting on the front page anymore. It's no longer funny and witty. It's just a bunch of math and programming "jokes" that make no sense to anyone else.
Honestly, Jesus Christ.- AnthonyJK, on 05/21/2008, -11/+10Maybe you're just retarded.
- gh0st32, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2maybe you're just lame
- flintmecha, on 05/21/2008, -8/+34As a computer science nerd, I'm part of xkcd's demographic. Trust me, this isn't even a joke. It's just an attempt to show off some sort of useless algorithm he created. I frequently enjoy xkcd, but this one is just stupid.
- Mononuclear, on 05/21/2008, -2/+13It's always been a bunch of math and programming jokes.. the whole point is that it is a nerd comic. Since I would imagine a good number of Digg users are math and programming nerds then that would explain why it keeps getting front paged.

- WraTH017, on 05/21/2008, -7/+1The king has no clothes. I bet most people who dugg this did not really understand it.
- Mooooose, on 05/21/2008, -0/+7Well John, people wouldn't digg it if they didnt understand it, right?
Just because you don't particularly understand whats going on does not mean eveyone else has no clue either.- flintmecha, on 05/21/2008, -2/+5Understanding this "comic" doesn't make it funny. There isn't even a joke. Not one.
The only reason this is being dugg is because it's xkcd.- Ploppyplop, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2And everything on Digg *has* to be funny?
- omgJOHN, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2Hey, I understood it just fine. I just think it's a retarded waste of time. This whole comic was made just to show how clever the author is.
"Oh look look! I thought of this stupidly complex formula that will send you to a random location! Tell me how clever I am!" - Mooooose, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2Exactly. You got it Ploppyplop.
And on that same note, does everything on XKCD have to be funny?
*****, a bunch of Calvin and hobbes were not funny. A lot of the strips were meant to be introspective. This obviously is more informative then anything.
- flintmecha, on 05/21/2008, -2/+5Understanding this "comic" doesn't make it funny. There isn't even a joke. Not one.
- CSharpSauce, on 05/21/2008, -5/+2Way better then all the obama crap that makes it the front page.
- AnthonyJK, on 05/21/2008, -11/+10Maybe you're just retarded.
- AlpineR, on 05/21/2008, -7/+1The middle button above and below the comic: RANDOM. What an accurate description of geohashing. You'll get the same result throwing darts at a map of your state.
- Neticule, on 05/21/2008, -8/+4Its funny because I don't understand!
- relikborg, on 05/21/2008, -2/+8I will stick to Geocaching, much more fun.

- chanop, on 05/21/2008, -10/+5The majority of people that see this won't understand it, but it'll get dugg to the top 10 just because it xkcd
- BryanG412, on 05/21/2008, -5/+3I wish I understood this...
- flintmecha, on 05/21/2008, -14/+9I don't know whether to bury this for "spam" (xkcd) or "this is lame" (pointless and not funny)
I CAN'T DECIDE- ChillEnt, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1You're pointless and not funny!!
- Ganpachi, on 05/21/2008, -6/+6Hahahahahahaha!

- seandfeeney, on 05/21/2008, -2/+8It's not very often that xkcd goes over my head... I will need to do some learning to understand this one.
- flintmecha, on 05/21/2008, -4/+2Here's how it works: You insert random numbers, and it gives you random coordinates. You're supposed to travel to those coordinates because that would be hip and cool and nerdy.
- diggit08, on 05/21/2008, -7/+2I don't get it. Am I an idiot?

I call everyone to arms... OK, THIS IS LAME- skidooer, on 05/21/2008, -1/+3I thought it was an interesting idea. Definitely not funny, though.
- happytedium, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1This is digg. xkcd is geek-oriented. If you don't get it, shoosh.

- Robopath, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1How is it that you think that XKCD is some kind of status symbol or IQ test.
I have understood the content of every one of these. The earlier ones were actually funny, they have progressed to being a one frame forum of unusual *****.
The thing that really makes this ***** annoying is people like CSharpSauce. Ugh.

On that day, you will be one of us.
- FishHammer, on 05/21/2008, -8/+2buried for people posting XKCD regardless of if the comic is actually funny or not
- CSharpSauce, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1Why does it need to be funny? This is a neat idea that hasn't been done... it deserves it far more then ever before if you ask me
- akohut, on 05/21/2008, -8/+2Not funny. Digg me down, I don't care. I refuse to support a comic that makes no ***** sense (or that you have to be a total dweeb to understand).
- hode, on 05/21/2008, -2/+3I can think of better ways to spend $4 gas... The algorithm should center on an urban area and keep the distance down.
- Phearce, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Are you in an urban area? Cause for many of us it would take at least $4 just to get to an urban area. But wait, then we'd have to leave the "wilderness". Much of my local quadrant is National Park or undeveloped woodlands. IMHO this is a quasi-random local hike-destination/potential flashmob generator.
- hode, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Flashmobs require people.

- Modestexcuse, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2Haaa haaa haaaaaa. Hope the Dow opens high on Friday. I may just end up in the Ocean if not. Anyone have a boat I could borrow?
- porkdanish, on 05/21/2008, -1/+3Maybe you don't understand hashing or maybe you don't understand sailing but either way there will be no correlation between what the Dow opens at and the location. It's just a randomizer.
- cthulhukb, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Exactly, and presumably the location is hashed over that day's Dow opening to prevent people from scouting out sites ahead of time. Well, except that Saturday's hash is based on Friday's Dow opening, so I guess you could scout it out a day early.
- porkdanish, on 05/21/2008, -1/+3Maybe you don't understand hashing or maybe you don't understand sailing but either way there will be no correlation between what the Dow opens at and the location. It's just a randomizer.
