- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -2/+128The Simpsons don't really live anywhere. If you watch enough episodes you'll realize that they contradict the places they live all the time. Sometimes they live on the east coast sometimes the west coast. The weather goes to impossible extremes and the geography doesn't exist anywhere in the US. The places they can DRIVE to are also incredibly inconsistant.
The best speculation I've heard is that the Simpon's Springfield is symbolic of the entire US. If you watch the show that makes sense. Springfield is a summary of the entire country and has a sample of everything, everyplace, and everyone in it. - beelz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+116I will not speculate on how hot teacher used to be.

- lordthor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+69No way... I could have sworn it was Springfield, Oregon.. they're always talking about Salem and Eugene!
dude, mind-blow.
the long-asked question has finally been answered though! That's the REAL story here!! The Simpsons is based in Illinois! Not Oregon!~
EDIT: I live in Springfield, Oregon B-) - scott1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+52"I will not speculate on how hot teacher used to be."

- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16no there isn't.
there's 28 Springfields in the US and Canada combined. that means that even if there weren't any in Canada there's still 22 states without them. - kb9vgr, on 10/12/2007, -11/+25they chose Springfield because there is a Springfield in every state

- mcottier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I live in Illinois, and I always thought it was based in Illinois. The reason being because in the show the neighboring city is Shelbyville, and that is the real neighboring city of Springfield Illinois.

could you make it so that it begins and ends with homer sitting on the couch? - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8FYI, the term Deus ex machina generally has to do wit the resolution of a conflict. A moutain range just being there one episode is just ***** continuity.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_ex_machina - goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@speaker -- going by your description, did you mean to do this? :
http://michael.flanagan.ie/store/homer_loop2.gif
-- seamless loop, starting and ending with the family on the couch. - Danl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7great intro, really good insight into the humorous, yet sometimes scientific, brain of Matt Groening.
There should most definitely be a YouTube group for Simpsons intros, I'd watch them all - 5c4r74c3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9reminds me of spore
- Speck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Freaky, maybe, but the *best* Simpson's intro is this:http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2231271827736577327
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powers_of_ten
"In May of 2006 at E3, Will Wright mentioned that his game title Spore was inspired by this film. " ( in reference to the original film Powers of ten which this Simpsons episode is a spoof of ) - Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7err, are you think of Illinois? Shelbyville, IL is southeast of Springfield, IL (which has a nuclear power plant btw, iirc). I can't seem to find a Springfield, Indiana on google maps.
Also, Springfield Illinois is also wrapped in a lake. - AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The Springfield in the Simpsons is supposed to be ambiguous. Different versions of episodes have placed it in different states for different parts of the country, so I don't think Springfield is supposed to truly be from any one place.
However, Matt Groening is from Portland, OR, and he named many of his characters for streets and landmarks in Portland. The Springfield in the Simpsons also has many similarities to both Portland, OR and nearby Springfield, OR including Springfield Gorge (the Columbia River Gorge) and coastlines, deserts, vast farmland, and a large mountain range over the horizon, all of which are consistent with the neighboring region of Portland.
In many wide shots you see the town also has a river running through it, with several bridges connecting the two sides, and has a sister city, Shelbyville closeby, which is inline with Portland's sister city, Vancouver, WA.
Check out this map of Springfield, put together with information from different episodes: http://www.mapofspringfield.com/map/index.html
And this map of Portland: http://www.geosbush.com/images/portland_map.gif - speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@phaed:
I changed the image above to not loop and to begin and end with homer on the couch.
If you still want it to loop but to begin and end with homer on the couch, get this one:

Whoaaaaaaaa... - TheSavant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They had different cities in the Behind the Laughter episode. If you watch it in reruns it will say a different city.
- BIGmog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's not an official Simpsons intro but actually a promotional spot for the show done in the UK.

- pyromonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@lordthor
Nooo! I always thought it was Springfield, Oregon too. I've actually brought that up in conversations with people. "Yeahhhh... I'm from Springfield, you know - like on the Simpsons?"
Damn. Now this town has nothing going for it.
Crazy video, what episode was that on? I don't remember seeing it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This story came from a comment on another story (the one about how big our universe is), which a new story will be created from a comment from the current one, and so on until we go back to the first story.
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ha ha this is my favorite intro, im glad you found it on youtube.
- flipz4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Listen people. Matt Groening has said that he chose springfield as the name because there are so many of them throughout the U.S and that they can have any plot at any given time. The reason why they had them located near illinois is because this intro was taken from the original "Powers of Ten" short film, in which they zoomed out in the exact same location. See for yourself.
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"The places they can DRIVE to are also incredibly inconsistant."
Or the places they CLIMB - remember the enormous mountains that suddlenly appear so close to the town? I think it's the funnier "Deus ex machina" that I have seen in The Simpsons. - hcker2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They have droped so many hints as to where Springfield is realy located. Unless they come right out and say for sure but my best guess is Springfield ohio.
They drop several other town names like Utica for example. Along with other key futures like the nuclear power plant. -
