As a regular attendee (geek), I can tell you that each year comics are phased out more and more by things completely unrelated to the comic book world. And who's to blame? G4 TV.
Yes, G4TV and the flea infested plague carrying rats its sinking ship brought along for the ride (the fans). They made it popular with idiots that have absolutely no interest in comics and just wanna show up for the party cuz it's there or because they want to alienate comic book people for youtube videos (no really, wait till you see all the idiots acting out in hopes of youtube stardom), and every year it's more about videogames, movies, and TV than the actual comics.
But you can still find them... the comics, i mean, you just have to look real hard and deep into the exhibit hall... right next to all the porn vendors.
But seriously... ***** G4. For the Comic Con, and for TechTV. - cawfee, on 07/14/2009, -3/+19Somebody is very hateful of a convention he's going to attend regardless. It's like the guy who goes to a nightclub just to stand in the corner and be upset at everything.
- numberneal, on 07/14/2009, -0/+156. because i don't go
- ProzakNathan, on 07/14/2009, -4/+17Someone's pissed they didn't get a press pass this year. As I was reading the article I could still hear George 'El Guapo' Roush cry.
- TonyTheTerrible, on 07/15/2009, -3/+15It would appear there are some cons in going to Comic-con.
- SolitaireRose, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8If you DO go, find the room Mark Evanier is holding panels in and just stay there.
He has the best panels, the best interviews and you'll see the best people to ever work in comics. - AceAMasta, on 07/15/2009, -1/+8YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4So if the geeks at Comic Con are not smart enough to have their convention organized in the matter they like it, can they be considered geeks?
- MacEnvy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4I heard that "San Diego" means "A Whale's Vagina".
- SanTe, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4Somebody buried you? The one time I went to San Diego Comic-Con I saw enough two-chair geeks to last a lifetime.
- spidoman, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3I hate G4 as much as the next guy but they aren't to blame. Comic book movies are to blame if anything is. Spider-man probably the most. First comic books said 'hey we can be mainstream now.' And that got a ton of people interested in their characters and stories. But comic books aren't just about the comics. They are about merchandising. Toys, TV shows, movies, video games.
Once they toy, tv, movie, and video game producers were invited for their comic book games, they found that people were interested in a lot more than just their comic book properties, so they gave the fans what they wanted, more of their products at comic-con.
It's been a natural progression into a more mainstream event, not because of G4, but because the comic book industry is beginning to branch out. It may suck for comic books now, but a tiny cable channel isn't to blame. - Duffle, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4I thought the title read Comic Sans.
- acid_jazz, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3RIP Tech TV
- aladrin, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4Then maybe you didn't finish reading the page then. He clearly says at the bottom that it's a great event and well worth going to.
The whole list is a joke. - QueenOfAStoner, on 07/15/2009, -3/+6***** COMIC SANS
- SanTe, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3Re 1) What difference does waiting in line to get in make when you're going to spend the next four days jammed shoulder to shoulder creeping across the show floor at a snail's pace to get to where you want to go? There is a name for creatures who do that: cattle. Except that real cattle don't pay for the privilege.
Re 3) ...on big screens because you're 300 feet away from the stage. But don't you feel cool because you're in the room.
Re 4) You pay to travel to San Diego and then way overpay for a ticket to see that?! Wouldn't your internet connection at home provide you the same imagery for free? Also, raise your standards. I saw plenty of girls wearing revealing costumes at San Diego Comic-Con last year; fewer than 10% of them would qualify as hot. - fiatjustitia, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2I've been once, and all told, it really was just a huge pain in the ass. Sure, it was cool to check out a few upcoming movies/games/comics etc, but weighed against the ridiculous amount of hair-pulling I went through that day kind of made it a wash.
- NoozeHound, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2You could - and why would it be racist - you would be giving your perspective on what you are reviewing from the point of a white person.
That's not racist any more than a latino, germanic, dwarf, pink or anything else view - it's just that - a view.
Unless of course your stated view was racist. I don't think other than being fattist the review delved into minorities.
I didn't think he was as funny as he did though. - ezikiel2517, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3Despite its faults, Comic Con is still great.
1) Once you have your badges you don't have to worry about that line anymore, and if you bought a four day pass, you get to pick your ticket up on preview night.
2) I work for the comic con staff and Elite is even ***** towards us. So, I do agree with you there.
3) Hall H is worth the terrible wait. You've got to try it at least once. That's how you see all the big titles and stars.
4) For every ten fat weirdos there is always a hot chick wearing a revealing costume.
5) So there may not be so many comics, but almost anyone that goes will find at least one thing they will enjoy.
See you at the CON! - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -4/+6Dugg for #2 and this comment, "#2 i agree last year i sat next to a guy at the panel who had a chair for each of his ass cheeks..."
- SanTe, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2I went in 2008 for the first and last time. You're not missing anything. San Diego Comic-Con is, in a nutshell, just advertising that in all the worst ways works in reverse. You pay to travel to another city, put yourself up in a hotel or hostel, and endure a ridiculously overcrowded show floor because they way oversell the place, so you can pay handsomely for the privilege of having almost nothing but advertising shoved down your throat for a few days -- the same advertising you can get a little while later on TV and the internet in the comfort of your own home for free. It's for fanboys who want to be *first*. Sure, there are celebrity panels, which quite honestly are pretty boring because most celebrities are boring to listen to. Sure, there are vendors, so if you're into collecting you can potentially find stuff you won't see anywhere else. But $200 for a 4-day pass for the privilege of fighting crowds to shop and view advertising and listen to actors drone on about how awesome it was to work on this (crappy) comic book movie project (Helloooooo 'The Spirit!')? Retarded.
When I first got there I was excited because I'd never been there before and I was a little awed at the sheer spectacle of it. Then by the end of the 2nd day I realized what it was: a giant scam to vacuum up money from brainwashed fanboys and fangirls. Thousands and thousands of people go to great effort and cost to travel to this event and pay through the nose to get in the door, to buy stuff they could get off eBay and elsewhere and see movie trailers a few weeks before everyone else, and to have a venue to compare costumes. Suddenly I felt really stupid for having wasted my time and money.
I suppose thousands of people can't be wrong and if they decide that (way overpriced) ticket is worth it to them, then hey... who am I to judge? If they feel they're getting great entertainment value for their time and money, more power to 'em I guess. There are people that feel they're getting great value from a Jonas Brothers concert, too. But it's kinda like paying $100 for a McDonalds hamburger when you can have an awesome steak for $20 with just a little more effort on your part.
Do you have a smaller Con (god what an accurate shorthand for these events) near you? Go to that instead. Not only will it be less crowded but it will cost a helluva lot less and you won't feel totally ripped off. I went to the last Emerald City Comicon here in Seattle a few months ago with a friend and it was a blast, it was only $20 a day, and it was a much better entertainment value. (No, I'm not affiliated with them in any way.)
Just my $0.02 on the overblown phenomenon that is San Diego Comic-Con. I'm sure when it was new in the '70s it was a real comics convention by, for, and about comics fans but trust me on this, today it is little more than a corporate-run money vacuum cleaner, and it shows. It was really depressing. - SweetDaddyD, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2I bet there will be a wolf T-shirt spotting or two there. And guys that owned them "before they were cool"
- PseudoThink, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2I went to the post-con feedback panel two years ago and offered to help them implement a simple Disney-style queuing system (I live 3 blocks from where it's held). I suggested they could offset the cost for the system by charging more for "VIP" all-access passes. They seemed interested in person, but never responded to my follow-ups. I assume there's no financial motivation for them to try to improve the experience, as long as the con is consistently oversold as much as it is.
- lelebelle, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Dugg for making me feel better about not getting to go this year.
- PresRob, on 07/15/2009, -0/+16. The HEAT! It is hot and humid! You might say, "Sure, but they have air conditioning in the Center.", but the answer to that is yes and no. You have A/C in the smaller rooms, but with 6000 people in a single room, it gets awfully hot, awfully fast. Corridors where you stand in line for two hours also don't have A/C and neither does the dealer's room. I would rather stay at home and log into a live feed to catch the panels while I drink some lemonade.
- asgardshill, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2George Roush is quite the frigging crybaby, isn't he?
- ceraphin, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2lol good pun why is that the first time i've ever heard that one
- ryanonfire, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1"Stupid people, trying to impress each other" >.<
- SanTe, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I think the San Diego Comic-Con sucks because it's filled with corporations pushing their crappy movies, TV shows, and video games. The way overpriced ticket and oversold attendance come in a close 2nd and 3rd.
- OAlvarez, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1As a san diego native that has been to many comic cons in the past years, i think what is killing it most is all the people who dont like like comics and just go there because its comic con and its big most of the blame i think falls on hollywood making big comic book movies
- charm803, on 07/15/2009, -3/+4I grew up with an older brother who collected comic books (which he still has.)
I know it had a big influence on me, since I've dressed up as Supergirl and Batgirl for Halloween before, and I believe it's the reason why I love the Back to the Future movies so much. The fantasy, the science, the sexiness of the female superheroes, I don't know what it is.
That being said, I'm not a comic book collector, nor do I read them often. I'm just someone who knows who has taken a 'so and so' interest and loved the Iron Man.
BUT I've been dying to go to Comic-Con, I just never have the time to be able to go.
To be surrounded by fans like that seems like a lot of fun.
I think ProzakNathan^ is right, they are just bitter they didn't get their press pass this year. - IrvineKinneas50, on 07/15/2009, -2/+3I see a lot of people hating on this guy, but if his critiques are valid (and I don't doubt them), then I can't see Comic-Con not-sucking.
- WraTH017, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1No. Comic book movies have been around for ages, and the gradual changes weren't as drastic and sudden until G4 got into the mix. Trust me... the place changed overnight, and it was because of their in-depth coverage of the event. The media covered it, yes, but a 30 second mention at the eleven of clock news didn't really pull the crowds G4 did.
- NextLust, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1As much as I would love to agree with you the sad truth is G4 cannot make anything popular. Maybe if it had an audience things would be different. The only ones to blame are the big studios taking over the annual convention and we the fans allowing it to happen.
- nwhysee, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0The real travesty is that those dying to see the Avatar panel have little chance of getting in: The Twilight panel is scheduled for right after.
- jaimiebell, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0while all of this is true...there is always at least one thing you see that makes it all worth it and have you planning next years trip when you get home.
- Belldanime, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1I'm also a San Diegan, and I agree that the con is just not what it used to be. It's grown way too big for its own good. Just walking along the isles is such a pain in the vagina. The amount of people there really brings me down. But on the upside, the good costumes, dressing up, and meeting people in the entertainment industry is just plain awesome. Last year I got to meet the cast of Red vs Blue, STAN LEE, and Orson Scott Card. I could just die happy that day. Orson Scott Card is my hero.
No crowd could screw up that day for me.
I even called in sick for work. n_n''
Totally worth it. - billraydrums, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1You guys head over to Ocean Beach and have some Barbecue at the BBQ house. It's right across from Hodad's, that joint featured on some Food network show and there's always a line around the building.
The BBQ house makes a mean sandwich..... - eyeWired, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0Not going this year. :-( The sheer amount of people just ruin it...at some point moving around the dealer's room shoulder to shoulder with 10 million people just stops being fun.
- NoozeHound, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Sans Comic apparently.
- jerrolds, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Come on guys, Olivia Munn and Kevin Periera are awesome :P
- ajua25, on 07/25/2009, -0/+0Incorrect. "San Diego" means "Saint Jacobson" in Spanish.
- barthes2006, on 07/15/2009, -2/+1Buried: the report about the security was patent horsepucky, last year at con, I came from my secret smoke spot late at night and they were rather nice to me and having worked security, I can assure you, the only reason why those dudes come off at the mouth is because one of your nerd brethren acted a complete ass toward them. Like everything else, the con got big and has to go through an adjustment period now that the "Michael Bay is a great director" mouth breathers, et.al have swarmed it, one good shake, and it's back to business people.
