While they're just your average no-talent, 3-chord band, they have actually managed to put together one or two songs that are somewhat catchy to have on in the background while you're sitting around having a few beers.

            I enjoy well crafted songs written my talented musicians as much, if not more than, most people. I also realize that not every song has to be a masterpiece to be enjoyable. Nickelback may not be the most talented band ever (yeah, I know, huge understatement), I'll take them over Britney or Christina any day.

            That's the wrong reason to hate an artist - because other people hate them. If you like the music, you shouldn't be ashamed. I can understand maybe hiding an unbeatable obsession with the macarena, but really, if the reason is that the music is 'engineered' or, as many seem to find, 'too popular', you should be content with listening to it.

A lot of the stuff that MTV and VH1 and many other large companies spoon feed you is garbage. Most people just don't realize that there is a lot of good music out there that isn't main stream. I love how I always hear indie songs being played on commercials but they never make there way onto MTV or anything like that.

      Well, here's why.

      There are probably a ton of bands that I like that someone else thinks suck. That's fine. It's expected. The point is that you don't have to like an artist but for them to be considered a valid artist, their whole modus operandi shouldn't be imitation of that which already is selling in order to sell more. That's why people bitch about "mainstream" rock. It's not that they are popular that makes them suck. It's that in the current landscape of Clear Channel and MTV you have to sound like what is already selling in order to be promoted. When you take a music like rock and roll that is supposed to be about energy and emotion and then wear that down to the lowest common denominator, it's going to piss off fans of rock and roll.

      Everyone has influences but when your entire sound is that derivative and your tunes sound like they were written by a committee rather than a poet, you are going to be criticized. Couple that with the fact that this boring, repetitive, soulless and unoriginal music is what gets crammed down your throat every day on commercial radio and you can see why some fans are annoyed.

      These auto-tuned pop creations are not what rock is about and it sucks that that is what sells these days. I'm not some old man that thinks everything by the next generation is crap compared to what I like. Even just counting rock music (which is a flash in the pan in terms of how long we've been making music) I've found great stuff from the very beginning up until the present. You just won't hear it on the radio which has become the modern equivalent of Muzak - nothing people will go nuts over but nothing that will make them offended or change the channel.

For the most part, I thought the lyrics were good as well, just not as polished as the music itself. But again, leaps and bounds above lyrics like those found in Nickelback's retarded song "Figured Your Out"; or any of their retarded songs, for that matter.

            Also, I prefer lyrics that I can listen to in the car with the family without getting a round of stink eye from my wife, but I'm sure my 5 and 9 year olds aren't your target audience, so that's probably neither here nor there.

      I like stuff like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd... and then when I'm in the mood for the rock equivalent of Battlefield Earth.... Nickelback is one of many such bands.

      Those who enjoy Nickelback generally don't know anything about musical -skill-. Actual, real-life musical ability. Anyone who has played/does play an instrument will instantly see the complete lack of skill in Nickelback. And they will also take great offense to the fact that such a poor excuse for music can make so much money. It's a great example of how people don't actually -listen- to music. They tap their foot to it, but they never really listen to it.
      • GunnerMcGrath, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6As a professional musician and songwriter I frequently laugh at the idea that "skill" on an instrument translates to quality songwriting. One need not be a master at an instrument to write a song that millions will enjoy, and many of the most skilled instrumentalists I've ever met couldn't write a decent tune if their life depended on it. I don't claim to be a master at either one, but I can certainly tell you one skill only mildly influences the other; quite often the more skilled instrumentalists fail at writing a good song for all their attempts to incorporate that skill into the song when it isn't necessary.

        On the other hand a huge portion of the population never listens to any artists they didn't first hear on their local rock station and therefore have an extraordinarily limited knowledge of what's out there. We've all heard songs that we hated at first but ended up enjoying (much to our dismay) after being force-fed the song 200 times in the course of a couple weeks. The average radio listener doesn't discern the difference between this and a real piece of quality music, so they go out and buy CDs based on what they've heard on the radio.

        Short version: radio play = more album sales than rightfully deserved. Always. Always.

If I want to tap my foot to a beat and enjoy it as I allow my mind to focus on something else (working, sleeping, carrying on a conversation), then how is that any more wrong or right than stuffing my head into a headset, closing my eyes and over-analyzing every intertwining voice and pattern to any and all of the multiple layers of a given track? Some music types (and individual songs) demand more attention than others and are, therefore, more appropriate to some situations as opposed to others. You're judging people for their taste in music, and how they choose to enjoy it. What attracts you to a song or particular style of music may be the exact thing that turns somebody else off, and to suggest that a person is wrong for their taste in music just because it differs from your taste is extremely self-centered and overly opinionated.

It's been shown that there is something to inaccuracy of human musicians compared to electronic music. For example, a human drummer who is off by a very small fraction of a second sounds better than electronic drums that are perfectly on time. Of course that inaccuracy could be emulated in electronic music.

          Definitely you can produce rhythms and sounds electronically that just can't be done otherwise, so there's definitely something to appreciate there. And also, some bands are mixing non-electronic and electronic music to produce some pretty amazing music.
