- kalleanka, on 03/31/2008, -6/+181I also complain a lot about the comment system.
But hey, let's give credit where it's due. The whole thumb up/down thingy is excellent and allows me to quickly ignore most crap.
But hey Kevin, something that really needs to get fixed is that if you post a comment too late, say after 100 people have already written comments, then no one sees it so I just ignore writing stuff unless there is less than 20-30 posts already made. Instead of sorting by number of thumbs up I would like be able to sort on say "thumb up per minute" or something like that. So just because someone write something first that is not necessarily the best comment. Even a comment coming in late should be able to make it to the top if the comment is useful/cleaver.
Thanks for your time... - headzoo, on 03/31/2008, -1/+101So I'm not the only one that thinks most of the Digg lab stuff is completely useless.
- sdrawkcabton88, on 03/31/2008, -2/+85"totally unusable activity data" indeed... looks cool as a screen saver though
- FulcrumVitesse, on 03/31/2008, -5/+65Ahh, so that's how Digg works!
- spammishking, on 03/31/2008, -9/+67I don't see what the big deal is.... I think digg has one of the better comment systems available, have you tried to follow a comment stream on other sites, it's just a random splattering of crap
- isaactwito, on 03/31/2008, -0/+49Wow from Diggnation you wouldn't guess that Kevin is a pingpong ball.
- EdwardBella, on 03/31/2008, -3/+49Just the comic: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2184/2370495359_d55 ...
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -10/+46First come, first served, bitch.
- xpose, on 03/31/2008, -0/+26Better yet. You will have no idea that I even replied to you. Isn't that fun and useful?
- LordofChaosIori, on 03/31/2008, -1/+25They say the camera adds 10lbs... and a human body.
- PoopSalad, on 03/31/2008, -0/+21nobody will read this so it doesn't matter what i say
- NightVortez, on 03/31/2008, -1/+20A comic version of..
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vzgEi_u9-88 - jfowler27, on 03/31/2008, -3/+21I used to complain a lot about the comment system until I got used to it and no longer cared one way or the other. I have a feeling if they tried to "fix" it there would be a lot more problems and people bitching and moaning even more.
- Gizza, on 03/31/2008, -0/+16The idea behind the comment system is good, the execution is horrible. About 75% of the time i get session expired when trying to comment. 100% of the time firefox freezes for about 10 seconds when trying to open a comment page, then if the story has over 500 comments firefox will stop responding for about 2minutes. Links get truncated all the time unless u edit your comment. Every so often stories have every single comment buired which is more of a reflection on the userbase really, but im sure they could do something about it such as limiting daily buries so people used them more wisely. If you dont set you global setting to expand all well then the comment system is basically unusable. All comments under a buried one are also as good as buried.
I'm sure there's more. - dagamer34, on 03/31/2008, -1/+16This was the best: http://flickr.com/photos/25036088@N06/2373304083/i ...
- TyTerrasso, on 03/31/2008, -0/+15Do people actually use the things done by Digg Labs?
- Verdanic, on 03/31/2008, -0/+12Well that's what happened - we had an un-nested system and then a two-layer system, and the result of our displeasure with those is this. It's not that the structure of the system is too bad (although the interface needs some work for usability's sake), it's that it's slow as ***** in many browsers on may platforms.
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -1/+10Comment abuse: original size - http://flickr.com/photos/25036088@N06/2370495359/s ...
- Majjoodi, on 03/31/2008, -0/+9And that's one excellent example of how great the comment system is!
- fkr3, on 03/31/2008, -2/+10The custodians don't get to be in the comics.
Oh snap more racism! - quomen, on 03/31/2008, -0/+8Well, people are just getting used to having a pretty crappy comment system for a while... There's so much wasted space etc etc etc. It's not that it's better. we just forgot about how bad it is.
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -2/+9Yes. My only problem is that too much weight is given to articles in "Popular" rather than more evenly distributed between posts in "Popular" and "Upcoming." If you want Upcoming posts you need to go to Upcoming because none of the tools target Upcoming as a priority.
- Aitese, on 03/31/2008, -1/+8Well son, when a man and a woman REALLY love each other that man buys her a Mac...
- monsterenergy, on 03/31/2008, -1/+8Read-able size...http://flickr.com/photos/25036088@N06/2370495359/s ...
- DarkoKun, on 03/31/2008, -5/+11Why arent any black balls working for digg? Racism!
- Kazbaeden, on 03/31/2008, -1/+7Digg's system used to suck without nested comments. I used to prefer Slashdot's comment system much better. Since Digg and Slashdot both changed their comment systems, I like Digg better than Slashdot and most other sites.
- sexybobo, on 03/31/2008, -0/+6http://digg.com/podcasts/Diggnation/499486
The podcast section comment system doesn't work. go all the way to the bottom it is broke.
I do like the visual style better but what the comments really need is a speed increase. Anything with over 500 comments makes my browser lock up until it is completely loaded. - xenosteel, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5But where do diggers come from?
- professorfurley, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6good to see people are still using MSpaint these days
- fkr3, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5Anyone can be a millionaire, just go to Zimbabwe.
- gameforge, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5Weren't they going to implement the Podcast section comment system across all of Digg a while back?
There were really a *lot* of bugs with the normal comment system until just a month or two ago when they fixed a bunch of them... expired sessions anyone?
Really, the Podcast commenting section looks like the rest of the site, minus all of the insanity - doesn't have the really confusing and hard-to-follow blue boxes and lines all over the place. Looks more like the original Digg but with nested replies (and thankfully not still using the middle 1/7th of the page like the Digg of some years ago). - LucasVB, on 03/31/2008, -2/+7"Tag! Now you're a vampire!"
- thailand1972, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6I don't get how that would work - because all the top (i.e. highest up the thread) comments will get the highest thumbs-up-per-minute anyway.
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5It's happening, you're on -4 at the time of writing this.
- BoneheadFarker, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4You're missing a huge part of Digg...
I'll cruise through some of the buried comments, because occasionally there are some incredibly brilliant trolls out there. While trolls are usually seen as the scurge of the net, I have to give credit for good writing to some of them. And if you look past the usual comments that are on the surface, you'll find a whole world of conversations taking place. There's more to Digg then just what makes it to the top... - saisumimen, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5You must be great at parties.
- KingTrask, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5Okay, we need that hello kitty thing now.
- soulpiercer7, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5douche
- TheUndertoker, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3Not all of us have the time to troll Digg 24/7. So what if you see an article you've seen before. Ya know what you do if run into an article you've already seen? Skip over it.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3I tried it once but it wouldn't stop and the item I wanted to click on got buried in an avalanche of stories being streamed into the carousel.
If there was a ***** pause button or some way to limit how much crap was added to the screen then It might not be absolutely useless.
And even then I would be asking why the hell I'm even using this. - Recluse, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2It does look cool though. But yeah pretty useless.
- GhostyBoy, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2That is the benefit to commenting in upcoming and reviewing people's submissions instead of just the popular ones.
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -3/+5Pretty ***** comic. Only reason it's on front page is cause it is about Digg.
- loquedesea, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2the amount of humor in that is ridiculous... i hope that 'thanks to the comment system' more people catch this.
- Jeffler, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1A good idea in my honest opinion would be to make the first 5 comments completely random trees from the thread, and then afterwards have everything in sequential order. That way, everyone has a chance at being seen.
- thomasb227, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1God. I hope they respond to this on diggnation. LOL
- gameforge, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1@sexybobo
@cesarandreu
...oh yeah. I remember seeing that way back when.
Although the point of the Podcast comment section wasn't to fix the bugs, it was to fix the braindamaged layout and the ridiculous page load times. - cesarandreu, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1This is probably a bit on the spam side...
But I had some fun looking through those comments. I really wasn't expecting something like that (I didn't know in what way the comment system was broken) and I actually do recommend you take a look. - thenome, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1I'll leave it at this, "digg's comment stream isn't any to good ether!"
- Ob1masterjd26, on 03/31/2008, -2/+3@kalleanka Yeah true that. But I gotta say Digg Swarm is a pretty tight screensaver :)
