- inactive, on 10/28/2009, -2/+28We do know that there's no Apple Tablet announced or available to the public, right? And that we have absolutely no idea what it will be like, when it will drop or really even if it will at all?
We all know that, don't we?
No? - RizzosBack, on 10/28/2009, -1/+19A: Comics are still just as glorious as they ever were.
B: Reading them on a tablet in no way contributes to the experience. - popzero, on 10/28/2009, -3/+13Marvel-ous Team-Up.
(As long as I can read my own CBRs and PDFs too.) - HouseofEl, on 10/28/2009, -0/+8Apparently the author of this article isn't aware that comic books are in a much better state quality wise than they have been in a while. Using a tablet to read them is an interesting concept, but it takes away from the experience that many if not most comic nerds buy them for in the first place. I'm not against digital comics, but reading on a tablet isn't something I would look forward to.
- A11YND, on 10/28/2009, -2/+9So wait.. no one has even seen it, and it hasn't even been confirmed to exist yet somehow we already know that it's going to change comic books forever? What else does it do? Cure cancer? Spread World peace?
- ArrowheadAddict, on 10/28/2009, -2/+8Didn't Josh Baskin pitch this 20 years ago?
- Laminarcissus, on 10/28/2009, -3/+9Dude, don't walk in on the Apple people when they're masturbating.
- branndon, on 10/28/2009, -2/+8Well this pic had me wondering, that's for sure!
p.s. could you please digg this and help me realize a dream of mine?
http://digg.com/people/If_You_Watch_On_One_Video_T ... - MercenarySlick, on 10/28/2009, -3/+8Are those really the only things America has contributed to culture? What about all the epic, classic American films? What about masterpieces like Stephen King and Philip K. Dick books? What about rock and roll, metal, and electronic music? What about nearly world-wide ubiquitous fashion items like blue jeans that even the French aren't too pretentious and snobby to wear?
Bah. - rpgguy1o1, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5the collectors market ***** killed comics. comics are actually worth reading now. i don't ever want to lose the paper medium, but incentive variants and that polybag ***** doesn't belong in the medium
- Humptydank, on 10/28/2009, -2/+6So much for the collector's market.
- kerwinste, on 10/27/2009, -6/+10Let hope so. This will make things much better.
- Vestar, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4if you dont hate/apologize for america then prepare to get buried
- ModernTenshi, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4Personally I won't be giving up my local direct sales shop for my comics even if this came to be. I might be tempted to use it to keep up with some series I don't care to add to my pull list, but only if the price per comic is a lot less than buying a physical copy.
Though I would defnitely like to see them include a digital copy of comics I buy with the purchase of a physical copy. Would be a nice incentive.
But yeah, as someone said earlier, there's really no replacing the experience of reading an actual comic book. - A11YND, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3but you cannot make the argument that an expensive giant iPod touch would "change the comic industry", you've been able to buy comics from marvel in digital form for a long time now and I'm sure there's alot more PCs in the world than there would be Apple Tablets, plus, really, what'd be so revolutionary about it? What's the use? There are ways to buy digitally and they're marketed very distinctly on the publisher's website but digital sales are insane small in compared to print sales, for comic books anyways. The Apple Tablet wouldn't be doing anything revolutionary for the comics industry, It'd just offer the same features already offered by comic readers on the iPod Touch.
I hate to sound like a fanboy here but if anything has the chance of being a game changer it'd be the Microsoft Courier. - inactive, on 10/28/2009, -2/+5Yeah....but Billy found the Zoltar machine too soon so we had to wait 20 years for him to be old enough to get the job at MacMillan Toys again.
- Humptydank, on 10/28/2009, -1/+4If it's from Apple, you'll definitely have to spread something to pay for it.
- darkphenox, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3Thats been dead for new comics for a while
- Barackalypse, on 10/28/2009, -2/+4ComicRack already did this, and without the need for an overpriced piece of hardware.
http://comicrack.cyolito.com/ - MercenarySlick, on 10/28/2009, -1/+3I'm well aware of that. The thumbs down don't really dissuade me, in fact they make me feel like I'm doing something right.
- darkphenox, on 10/28/2009, -4/+6I hate digital comics, I love going to the store Wednesdays and talking to people, also I love having a hard copy that can be passed to other people to see if they like comics or a series they are not into.
- genYretardbrat, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Worst...comment...ever.
Just kidding.
Comics are indeed expensive, especially if you want some Manga. Even graphic novels seem to be a couple of bucks overpriced.
I wish the US was a bit more like Japan when it comes to the ubiquity of comics. If they were more popular, maybe they would be cheaper. - falconear, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2The trick to bringing comics back to their former glory is to figure out a well to sell them for less than 3.99 a copy! Kids can't afford that. Hell, I'm an adult and I can't afford it. Luckily for me there's a flea market near me that the local comic shop uses to offload their slightly damaged copies so I can get my titles at more like 1 buck each.
- janinekahn, on 10/28/2009, -5/+7Want!
- inactive, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2See, you're running that joke past the wrong guy. If an Apple Tablet actually drops, I'll be the first to yell "Cleanup in aisle 5".
- tankertosa, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1It's true that this is a big part of enjoying comics but I don't have a comic book store anywhere near me. It would be nice having a place to easily and conveniently buy the books I'd like to read. Comics can be downloaded as a .cbr but that can be a pain in the ass. If priced fairly I would be willing to buy my comics and support the publishers.
- MScrip, on 10/28/2009, -1/+2You're right... no one has ever seen the Apple Tablet or even knows what it does... yet *everyone* seems to be coming out with their own "internet tablets" and e-book reader devices. There's something going on.
I think companies are afraid that the Apple Tablet will do in 2010 what the iPod did to the MP3 player market over the last few years... so they are all trying to get in on the action now. - inactive, on 10/28/2009, -1/+2Americans invented musical comedy?
We must have done it before America existed as a country. - branndon, on 10/28/2009, -1/+2Thanks Corey! HAHA I never got to grow a beard because I was in sales in front of customers. Well when I got laid off 3 months ago.... it was time! First I grew it out like a hobo, then trimmed it, but I have two little bald spots. Anyway thanks for the digg!
- 20ox02, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1I think this is the move towards the ultimate prize: Amazon's Kindle
- inactive, on 10/28/2009, -1/+2Have you tried to sell comics lately? Like baseball cards, they are not worth the cost of the plastic sleeve you keep them in anymore.
- DoitWright, on 10/28/2009, -3/+4Very cool.. When?? When?? ...
- DarkShroud, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1First you have to wait for the tablet device to actually be announced before you try and guess what functionality will be on it.
But if you actually are interested check out: http://comicrack.cyolito.com/ - Gerz1219, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1What's the appeal of the Apple Tablet really? A $300 netbook works just fine as a portable e-reader and it has a real keyboard and mouse and can run real applications. You can even install OSX on a lot of netbooks if you want to.
The Apple Tablet is always depicted as a large iPod Touch, with all of its inherent limitations and none of its portability (and, presumably, a starting price of $1,000 or more). Why would anyone settle for the locked-down approved-apps-only iPod ecosystem on a device that should act more like a PC? We might as well just wait for multi-touch netbooks. - A11YND, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1 There very well could be a tablet in the works, but as of lately there's very little evidence aside from the fact that it's know a few years back Jobs was handed a tablet running Mac OS X using mutli-touch and he cancelled the project. While it is possible that Apple is making a tablet I'm going to put my skittles on them working to spread the branding of the iPod Touch and its functionality as a whole. Clearly the Touch works as a reader/comic reader/tablet/browser etc and I just don't see Apple making a product that would undermine the success of the Touch when its in its boom, that is.. assuming the rumors that it's a custom version of OSX designed like the Touch which every rumor seems to think.
- MScrip, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1Sorry... I never made the argument "that an expensive giant iPod touch would change the comic industry."
I was speaking more broadly, commenting on the "no one has seen it yet, and it hasn't even been confirmed to exist yet" aspect of the Apple Tablet. I didn't refer to the comics point of view at all... just the tablet in general.
In fact... I never used the word "comic" once in my post.
It was a sensational headline... so I made my comment on the tablet concept as a whole... and what the market is doing to prepare for it. Clearly there's something going on... because everyone is making a tablet or book-reader device. - MercenarySlick, on 10/29/2009, -0/+11) Philip K. Dick is known as one of the greatest if not THE greatest and most prolific science fiction writer ever. His books and movies cased on his books have been popular world-over not just in the US. Stephen King is known as one of the greatest horror writers. It's amazing that you're so snobbish that you don't consider them to have contributed to world culture even though their success was world wide and inspired countless other authors.
2) Blue jeans, that's fashion. Fashion is a part of culture. Blue jeans can be found in almost every country, if you don't consider that to be a contribution to culture than that's your snobbishness rearing its head again.
3) You're saying American films are only popular in America? Are you an idiot or just disingenuous? American films are more popular just about everywhere in the world than those from any other country's film industry. Other countries make movies of course but they've had nowhere near the impact on world-wide audiences as American movies. Let's use Star Wars as an example. You can go to any country in the world and find Star Wars geeks that were affected enough that they actually consider the first time they saw the films to have been a momentous part of their childhood. You can't go anywhere in the world and find people who were similarly affected by the films from any other country, there's no way.
Your anti-Americanism is a severe mental disorder. That's what it is. So much so that people like you can pretend the US has no cultural influence on the world even though modern culture is founded on the US. Think about it. You're on an American website right now, discussing an American product (Newsflash: Apple is American). You're almost certainly on an American web browser. You're using almost certainly an American operating system (Mac OS or Windows). You're using an American computer architecture (Mac or PC). And you're doing this all on the internet which uses the TCP/IP protocol to transfer data that was invented by Americans. These are all technologies that have had a massive global impact on culture... and yet a pretentious Canadian like you whose country itself does nothing but imitate American culture thinks he's in a position to pretend that the US has not contributed to culture?
You're a living, breathing oxymoron. You contradict the premise behind what you say, AS YOU SAY IT. I'm getting pretty disturbed by anti-American mental midgets like you. You're completely delusional. - MechaMurloc, on 10/28/2009, -3/+4Well, its from Apple. So it will only distribute Archie comics because Marvel or DC Comics has not passed their approval process. Don't even think about Dark Horse or Image!
- immatellyouwhat, on 10/28/2009, -1/+1Awesome beard/chops/stache haha and good luck, this may look like spamming but watch the video guys, Branndon and his wife deserve it. DUGG.
- iChopPryde, on 10/28/2009, -2/+2your portuguese you have the same last name as me ill support your vid lol
- funtownarcade, on 10/28/2009, -3/+3The comic publishers should not be waiting for Apple to come to them. Apple releases development tools to everyone.
- coltrane68, on 10/29/2009, -1/+1The argument for comics in book form is quite valid. Some people love to hold the book in their hands and then keep the books in their collections.
The argument for digital comics is equally valid. Print costs are by far the most important expense in comic publishing. If the marketplace is fair, there is no reason that a digitally distributed book could not sell for half of what the print books cost. - KirbyMorph, on 10/28/2009, -1/+1Wow, you didn't just list a sci-fi author and whatever the ***** up drek Stephen King puts out as major contributions to the world's culture, did you? And blue jeans? As for the "epic, classic American films", they're popular...in America. Other countries make movies, too. Shame you're too snobbish and stuck up on the "epic, classic American films" to watch any. Also, many of the best movies are based on books, which were always better than the movie versions.
- marblewonder, on 10/28/2009, -1/+1We know for sure though that it wouldn't look like a giant iPod touch like in the pic
- inactive, on 10/28/2009, -1/+1You know what? I *am* going to Digg your video... not because it's your dream, but because I respect your facial hair.
- inactive, on 10/28/2009, -7/+1Made a comment on your movie. Mostly telling you how gay you are. Also, you need a kick in the balls for derailing the discussion, you spamming hobo.
Good luck.
