- Huangism, on 10/24/2008, -1/+14to become a superhero all you gotta do is roll around in toxic waste
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -2/+13This is a quote from Watchmen, and is very much on topic, in case some of you don't get the reference.
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -2/+8Doctor - "So why were you rolling around in toxic waste anyway?"
Adam West - "......I was trying to get super powers" - neocreo, on 10/25/2008, -0/+6Clearly, Sir, the world beg to differ.
- - ShoggothDreams, on 10/25/2008, -1/+6Nice to see a non-fluff article, all on ONE page! The comparatively in-depth details on V For Vendetta, and it's greater significance now with the growing fascism in the US and Britain, made the article have more to say than just focusing on "Bam", "Boff", "Crash" from 70's Batman episodes. :P
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -1/+6that made no sense at all.. wipe out the middle class?
- jonshipman, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4*****, and I was about 50% done with my robotic exoskeleton that'll turn me into a super hero.
- dha07030, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Your girlfriend has a raging boner?
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -1/+4Change their lives, sure. Change the world around them... not so easy. It comes in small steps. The regular people pretty much are powerless besides having voices, and even the loudest voice won't change the fact that most people don't want to hear. You're right though. That's exactly what must happen.
- TyrannousDotNet, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3this is bull *****, we dont need superheros
we need regular people to stop thinking they are powerless to change their lives or the world around them. - DNABeast, on 10/25/2008, -1/+4Stand Back World! I am Cancerous Growth Man!!!
- Stevethegreat, on 10/25/2008, -2/+5"Our world is hurtling into the abyss, propelled by wars, genocide, terrorism, environmental disaster, and the global financial meltdown"
The world was NEVER in better state than it is know and things are only going for the better. People around the globe are better fed, better educated than EVER.

Don't externalize/generalize your regional -in fact- problems. - Jordan117, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2"Just, fire and... and flames, just flames are pouring from the buildings now, there's cars toppled, buildings, entire, just... crushed and crumbled. I'm not sure if it's safe to report from my vantage point, I -- I really need to leave. Civil defenses inform me that the surrounding areas are, are in ruin. I... I see some people running now. In the opinion of this reporter... if this nation or, in fact, the world ever needed heroes, that time is now... that time is now..."

If we don't wallow in despair how will the superheroes know to come? - honeybrass, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2I spent 9 months once working in a nuclear medicine lab, and what did I get for it! Paid! Just pathetic money!
Stupid, lying, scummy, comic writers, I should be bending steal and have x-ray vision, and be chased by gorgeous, mutant women trying to kill me! It all went so very nowhere. - pnmoore, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2Excellent point! The difference is that in today's world knowledge of the bad stuff going on is so much more in our faces than it used to be. First it was radio, then television, then cable and satellite gave television even more power and access to information and now the impact the internet has had on information access for the masses. This progression has made for more and more informed people and the exaggerated impression that the world is "hurtling into the abyss." Things have always been bad, and there have always been bad people. We just know more of them now.
A college professor of mine made this point (with regard to the whole ultra-religious anti-sex obsession that some people have) by explaining that the swinging 20's weren't called that because of how they danced. You just didn't see it on On Demand TV or streamed over the internet. - armakaryk, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1woa woa woa woa! moore actually talked to some one about comics? thats pretty outstanding.
- kiza200, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1now is not spelt know

I, too, am a HUGE fan of Somatic - Terasiel, on 10/25/2008, -1/+2Well someone has a raging boner for Alan Moore.
- dddavid, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1Is that what my dogs trying to do, get superpowers?
- neocreo, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1My girlfriend would have a raging boner for him, as his graphic novels are the only ones I have ever seen her read with gusto!
- kenyadoit, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1Well said Stevethegreat. I'd digg you twice if I could.
I'm so tired of hearing of all this "hurtling into the abyss" "get ready for Armageddon" ***** from either religious wackos, or paranoid tin-foil-hat people. If you look at all that's going on in the world, the biggest differences between 20 years ago and now are education, and access to information people have. Diseases, war, violence, people in power oppressing those that dont have power, and people working hard to make the world a better place for their children to live in.
plus ça change, plus c' est la même chose (The more things change, the more they stay the same)
-Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr - shanesemler, on 10/25/2008, -3/+4Alan Moore is actually a *****. He hates heroes. This is what separates him from someone like Frank Miller. While both write about broken heroes, Millers heroes, no matter how ***** up they are, are always the hero. Moore despises heroes and consequently, superheroes. He also hates America, despite the fact that his country (England) is much further down the road to exactly the sort of Orwellian hellhole he despises. He write some good stuff sometimes but I really don't like him or his philosophy and he is far too in love with himself. So yeah, he's an *****.
- dddavid, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1I found it useful.
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1***** ***** replies
- shanesemler, on 10/25/2008, -1/+2Frank Miller isn't a fascist. Pull your head out.
- passedoutghost, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1Or be exposed to radioactive waste and perhaps a few x rays. Which I happen to have in my backyard. Come and join the party people. The first 50 get a posthumous Darwin Award!
- tavman, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1I'm letting my geekiness hang out, but that intro gives me chills each time I hear it.
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1Frank Miller is a ***** fascist. He writes a bunch of crazy right wing ***** about supposed heroes who will kill their way indiscriminately through anything to protect a subjective viewpoint. They're not heroic, they're scary.
- TyrannousDotNet, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1keep working, as a back up plan
- tavman, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Sure. Like his treatment of Reagan in Dark Knight Returns was what any good right-winger would deem respectful....
- faeriezombie, on 10/29/2008, -0/+0I definitely think this is a time when the world could use one if there were actually any around. It would give us something to look forward to and have hope for the future.
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -2/+2if you haven't read watchmen

- SlickNickNL, on 10/26/2008, -0/+0So is that: bending, steal, and have x-ray vision, or bending steel and have x-ray vision?
