- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -2/+30Transmetropolitan should've been on as well.
- RealmDown, on 07/29/2008, -0/+17Dugg for Calvin who, with Hobbs support, is arguably one of the finest philosophical minds on the planet.
- apothekari, on 07/29/2008, -0/+17To this list I would've added
1.From Hell-Alan Moore & Eddie Campbell's horrifying descent into 1888 London
2.Saga of the Swamp Thing Alan Moore's run on this seminal comic paved the way for about 90 % of the list.
3.Horror Hospital-Dennis Cooper's hallucinatory ride thru a lovers madness
4.The Invisibles-Grant Morrison should've sued the Wachowskis for The Matrix
that'll do for now...great list otherwise - luke16, on 07/29/2008, -1/+18Before i click the link, here's my list.
V For Vendetta (much better than the movie, if you haven't guessed)
Dark Knight Returns
Astro City: Confession
Bone
Preacher (the entire series is some of the most ***** up stuff you'll ever see/read)
The Surrogates
Calvin and Hobbes - TripcodeMel, on 07/29/2008, -2/+16Spider Jerusalem is displeased.
- naugrim, on 07/29/2008, -0/+13I'm kind of blown away that they stopped at only 9 books and failed to mention any of the following:
Transmetropolitan
Hellboy / BPRD (forget the movies; the comics are amazing!)
AKIRA (the entire series is 2000+ pages; not to mention totally epic)
Walking Dead
Invincible
V for Vendetta
Top 10 (another great series by Moore)
Jimmy Corrigan
Planetary
Ex Machina
Bone - scooterbaga, on 07/29/2008, -4/+15I'd just like to say... I freakin' LOVE programs allowing you to read comics. (Edited from 'I love comic book readers' for obvious reasons.) It's such a pain and expensive to track these down otherwise... And in some cases you don't even know if you'll ever read it again.
Within 20 minutes of the Watchmen trailer being released I had the complete graphic novel... Within 5-6 hours I had read the entire series... Then could make the informed desicion to buy the rerelease of the Absolute Edition when it makes it out again in November.
This ability makes me very happy! - NovaPrime9, on 07/29/2008, -0/+9Marvels wasn't in the same league as Kingdom Come. It was good, but it wasn't Kingdom Come good.
- itsjoshy, on 07/29/2008, -0/+9no Y: The Last Man? :(
- sweeneypng, on 07/29/2008, -0/+9I would also add Bone by Jeff Smith. I don't see it mentioned much in lists of great comics, but it really is a good read, and an impressive accomplishment, considering it was done by one person, largely self-published, and took 13 years to finish. It's not light reading (1300+ pages), but it's worth it.
- Stupidumb, on 07/29/2008, -0/+8Settle down, Alan
- shutaro, on 07/29/2008, -0/+8Your mom is awesome.
- shutaro, on 07/29/2008, -0/+7I totally just complimented your mom! What are you gonna say to that? ... Thank You!?
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+6Preacher! yeah, cant wait for the HBO preacher series (Hope Mark Steven Johnson wont cheese it up too much)
Anyways, that list needs 2 things:
1. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
2. Palestine by Joe Sacco - TheWebSwinger, on 07/29/2008, -7/+13Kingdom Come but not Marvels? There's a DC bias goin' on in this article.
- robdiggity, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5I liked Rising Stars, but it doesn't rise to TDKR, Kingdom Come or Watchmen levels. It was a fun story, and it has been plundered left and right, but those books are literary masterworks. As far as great story telling goes Preacher is peerless in its epic pulp perfection.
And for sheer literary beauty, Sandman has no equal. Gaiman takes characters last exercised by William Shakespeare and makes them live with and speak in the same manner and voice as their original works. As much as I like JMS, he just can't do that. - chadwalters23, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5So glad to see Hellblazer on the list.
- markwahlberg, on 07/29/2008, -2/+7i wont argue it. ill just say i like dark knight better. maus is good, but it isnt exactly something that you can reread over and over.
- cresswga, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Another vote for Transmetroplitan and I would also throw in JMS' Rising Stars too.
- Wiini, on 07/29/2008, -2/+7OH SNAP!
- shadowman99, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Absolute? Really?
The artwork?
You found nothing at all redeeming in Kingdom Come? - LeepII, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5No V is for Vendetta? This list blows.
- SquigglyP, on 07/29/2008, -1/+6If you've not read the book then you might not understand that cutting a trailer for that film is probably more than just a little difficult. It's really several different stories that are all woven together, but the main characters don't interact much in the book until the end - aside from some flashbacks. The trailer actually looks pretty good to me. It seems to be a faithful adaptation of the book.
- holyreality, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5cerebus = best comic series ever.
glad to see sandman and preacher on there as well.
but what about bone? - reuscel, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Alex Ross, man. Show some respect!
- nodong, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4The Invisibles is a hundred times cooler than the Matrix. If they stole ideas from it, they're piss poor thieves.
- demiurgency, on 07/29/2008, -2/+6I second that. I just read through issues #1-15 of Alan Moore's Miracleman (definitely deserves to be on this list) last night on a 42" screen. What an amazing way to re-experience comics from ten years back which I have no chance of tracking down in comic book stores (and not pay a fortune).
- shadowman99, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4What ARE you buying in the comic shop if you think it's all crap? What genre is worthy is superheros are all crap? Zombies? Sci-Fi?
>>"no one over the age of 14 or 15 is going to buy that crap unless it's just for the 'collectors' market"
You are mistaken. - cadmiumpaint, on 07/29/2008, -1/+5Maus isn't as accessible as the others. A lot of people just can't get through it.
- rhartman, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4The Wachowskis were too busy stealing the ideas behind the Matrix from a novel to worry about Comic Books / Graphic Novels.
http://digg.com/movies/Black_Author_Wins_The_Matri ... - scooterbaga, on 07/30/2008, -0/+3I do my best to purchase things I would've if the piracy option wasn't an option. Like I said, I'm TOTALLY buying the Absolute Watchmen when it comes out.
Otherwise I'm just 'test driving'... ;) - shadowman99, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3So who is a decent artist in your opinion? I'm interested in who can raise the bar on Alex Ross.
- naugrim, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Listen to the Chair Leg of Truth!
It does not lie! - Shogi, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3You first.
- unklesam666, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3contract with god being higher ranked than the sandman - hmm. there's more than a label bias going on as well...
- TrevorBelmont, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3I've never read The Watchmen but it's hard for me to imagine that it is better than The Sandman series.
Before you bury me for speaking out of my depth, I mean this in no way to slight The Watchmen but only to celebrate my adoration of The Sandman. It may just be the finest and best told story I've ever read. - demiurgency, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3I'll agree with you. I loved the cover art, but when I actually read it, I was sorely disappointed. Tripe.
- STYLUSS, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3There are comic series or limited series that were well received because they weren't about a single issue such as hellblazer, preacher or kingdom come. Sandman, swamp thing by Moore, invisibles and transmetropolitan (are an example) of series that were about several topics, love, betrayal, loneliness, anger, the meaning of your existence for example. Something as Kingdom Come or Marvels are about a specific issue of the Universe of that Comics Company.
- dnields, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3You forgot to say something about how it was all part of the plan.
- markwahlberg, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3typical list.
id throw in y the last man, sleeper, transmetropolitan, and powers. - BIGLEX76, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3I love these kind of articles because i'm always looking for something new to read...
Just my $0.02...
Fables
Y the last man (Fin.)
100 Bullets (this series is about to finish)
Rising Stars (Fin.)
Preacher (Fin.)
Ex Machina
Walking Dead (i just started this one and I'm hooked)
Empire (Fin.)
DMZ
American Virgin (I thought the ending sucked though) (Fin.)
Bite Club (Fin.)
Wanted (Fin.) (The comic Version)
Powers
And this is all i can think of.. or atleast what's sitting on my desk at work.
*(Fin.) meaning the series finished - robdiggity, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3kimota.
- Balanced, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Why? He's happy to be left alone on his mountain and probably would rather not see a culture so concerned with media while ignoring the real issues.
- peoplerstoopid, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Almost buried for not having Rising Stars because that was a wicked series. But Dark Knight Returns, Preacher, and Sandman definitely and are more than enough for a digg.
- mandarin, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3No Astro City? Or Top Ten?
- nicc, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3"Hype for Watchmen?"
seriously, this is the first I have even heard of "Watchmen". what is "Watchmen"? - palewook, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Fails for not including any Garth Ennis Punisher TPB like "The Slavers."
- rgaino, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Preacher is brilliant. Twisted, sick, pure genius.
- carinishead, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3The Invisibles was the *****. I'm glad I downloaded them and read the entire series in a few nights.
- trdrstv, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3I'm torn, between digging this up or down. Essentially I have a very difficult time with the claim that The Entire Sandman series, is "Almost as good" as Watchmen. Particular story arcs sure, but not the whole.
Alan elevated comics as an Art form with Watchmen, but Neil elevated it (after him). You CAN claim (especially given the history between the two) that without Alan Moore, Neil wouldn't have got into comics, or ever done Sandman, but he did; and Sandman as a whole, is simply better. -
