- shadowman99, on 08/18/2008, -4/+921.) Manga made into live action staring non-Asian actors = suck. Leo DeCrappio as Kaneda in an Americanized Akira? *****. No.
2) FLCL is a creature of animation. If you try doing half of what they did in the cartoon with objects growing out of character's head it will simply look like bad CG. And chances are it will be.
3) Can Hollywood go and get a new ***** idea without re-hashing or ripping off someone else?
4) It's bad enough Hollywood is ripping off Anime, but ***** Tobey McGuire in Robotech? Could someone at least tell him that Robotech is bastardized SDF Macross with 2 other shows cut into it? (Imagine if someone cut Star Trek and Star Wars and Firefly into one story and overdubbed it. That's Robotech.
5) Some anime stories only work because they are grounded in Japanese cultural references. Character motivations would be completely different in an Americanized story, and at some point you only have a common title. The story is lost. Imagine a live action Hollywood version of any Hayao Miyazaki story. It wouldn't work.
6) This all reminds me of when network television brings a British TV show to the states. 95% of the time the recast and remake the show, as in The Office. If you see a British show on TV it's always on cable. Now that same mentality is going to ***** up some great Anime stories. It's very sad.
7) PS - ***** Carl Macek - Greatn3ss, on 08/17/2008, -3/+71FLCL shouldn't be touched, that movie would be absurdly ruined by any live action remakes. It's perfect as it is.
- UltX, on 08/18/2008, -2/+47TETSUOOOOOOO!!!
- Greatn3ss, on 08/18/2008, -0/+28KANEDAAAA!!!
- dyreschlock, on 08/18/2008, -0/+18make a live action Bible Black.
- hardwarehank, on 08/18/2008, -1/+19The continuation of Berserk would be nice - they left it off SO bad in the anime.
- kaosethema, on 08/18/2008, -5/+21why
- guerrilla_suit, on 08/18/2008, -0/+16Could we just leave Hollywood out of it, please?
- Grimdotdotdot, on 08/18/2008, -1/+15Ghost in the Shell *is* cool. There's no need to do it again.
- ericdano, on 08/18/2008, -1/+15FLCL wouldn't really translate well in America and as a live action flick.
NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind. No. To recreate that world, it would be like Bewolf........and that sucked.
Parasyte, I don't know anything about. Might be good. Sorta like a Hellboy like world.
SDF........actually, it would need to be a trilogy to make sense. I can't really see anyone making a 2-3 hour movie and having it make sense. There are too many story lines, and a lot of the action isn't really "action" (ie not a LOT of space fights). It would be a wiser idea to perhaps do something like Macross Zero live action, except make the story line not lame. Do the crash of the SDF, etc, etc, and at the end of the movie, set it up for a sequel to go into the main SDF story line (ie: Zentradi warp in......fade to black).......
I don't think the author really has a good understanding of Manga/Anime. Perhaps he has just seen one or two? Seems like it...... - Smokeydabear, on 08/18/2008, -1/+14I loved Fooley Cooley (FLCL, or whatever you want to call it) for the music, just looking at the name puts that theme song back into my head.
- BXRWXR, on 08/18/2008, -7/+18Ghost in the Shell would be cool.
- Greengoo, on 08/18/2008, -0/+11I get it, you can't drop below 5000rpm even when changing gears...
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -0/+11Ugh, I wouldn't want any of those as live-action.
- Smwbigboss, on 08/18/2008, -0/+11FLCL is unique, thought provoking, and just plain awesome. It's pretty much the opposite of anything that comes out of Hollywood.
- Ferago, on 08/18/2008, -1/+11The Akira movie is going to be set in Manhattan instead of Tokyo. Wonder what else they'll ***** up.
- jeremyduffy, on 08/18/2008, -2/+12Creating live action from animations or comics is hard. Superhero movies are hit or miss (some great, some terrible), but they've NEVER made a good cartoon to live-action before and I'm not holding my breath for them to do it with manga.
ex. Flintstones, Scooby Doo, Inspector Gadget, Casper, Ritchie Rich, etc : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_live-action_f ...
On the other hand, the Japanese do ok making their manga live action just fine without us:

There's nothing freaking wrong with subtitling. Let the pros do it, just write the English at the bottom. - Grimdotdotdot, on 08/18/2008, -0/+10Well, that makes it stand out in Anime field, then.
Ghost in the Shell is one of my favourite films ever, and it took me about a year (and most of the 1st Gig) to understand the ending. - Pake, on 08/18/2008, -0/+10Would be cool, until we have start explaining why GitS is not a Matrix ripoff when it comes to special effects, but rather Matrix uses a lot of GitS material.
- Jektal, on 08/18/2008, -1/+10And it would be PG-13 since it's obviously "a cartoon for kids"
/s - inactive, on 08/18/2008, -1/+10I like ***** manga...what do they call it...HENTAI?
- gnomead, on 08/18/2008, -1/+10You would rather see a Hollywood version of Berserk than read the manga?
- urlostinmyworld, on 08/18/2008, -1/+10"Manga Movie?" Live action?
You've got to be kidding me, stop digging these lame-ass Gawker Media blogs.
And please don't ruin otherwise excellent ANIMES. - amibatman, on 08/18/2008, -0/+9Yea ***** that guy
- shredswithpiks, on 08/18/2008, -1/+9Didn't even realize americans were preparing to bastardize one of the greatest achievements (if not the greatest achievement) in animation from the 1980s.
Turning Manga (or anime... or anything j-culture) into American movies always leads to tragedy. This is a terrible idea. - john2kx, on 08/18/2008, -0/+8The cliffhanger in the anime was intentionally done to bring people into the Berserk manga.
- jeremyduffy, on 08/18/2008, -0/+87) Lol. I wonder how many people know who he is.
8) F*ck Nelvana, butchering Anime since the 90's - NeoCortex, on 08/18/2008, -0/+7Somehow, Hollywood would manage to make this PG-13.
- ZeroFive1, on 08/18/2008, -1/+7Live action cartoons is RETARDED,
Rebuild of Evangelion is a good idea, but live action? - rblancarte, on 08/18/2008, -0/+65 Manga Movies We Want to See
Go to your local video store and rent them! I already saw them that way.
Oh wait, you mean butchered into live action? Not so much. - Greatn3ss, on 08/18/2008, -0/+6I don't know why, but I love you for quoting that line.
- TVarmy, on 08/18/2008, -0/+6A lot of American movies ripping off of Kurosawa's films came out pretty well, including a little known gem called Star Wars. Fist Full of Dollars is also based on a Kurosawa film.
I'd like to see the reverse happen. Preferably, with America's crappiest products being turned into manga. Let's do the Scary Movie series first. - 4rp4n3t, on 08/18/2008, -1/+6Americans don't like to read dude.
There. Fixed. - kingofinternet, on 08/18/2008, -1/+5live action berserk would have to be nc-17
- NeoCortex, on 08/18/2008, -1/+5Watch Van Helsing, and you'll have a pretty good idea how this would turn out.
- jeremyduffy, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4As if they could make that live action legally.
Oh, and you're a sick f*cker along with anyone else who can think of little kids in a sexual way. - greensky, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4I caught the live action version of Death Note at the theater. It was a little bit silly in parts, but it was a lot of fun watching it in a packed theater of fans.
- HydrogenY, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4This kid needs to be cast.
http://s4.tinypic.com/xbel5f.jpg - requiem3, on 08/18/2008, -2/+6Manga made into live action staring Asian actors is equally horrifying, if not more so, Japanese have some of the worst acting from what I've seen in their live-action movies.
- d3sp, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4Agree completely with #2, whoever wrote this has no clue about that series.
- Acglaphotis, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3Death note live action movie ftw.
- PReitz, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3They already tapped all of the American comic books.
On a side note: Live action Akira? When did this happen? - darkzealot89, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3I ***** love FLCL, I encourage anybody to at least check it out. It is only a few episodes long, but they kick so much major ass.
- mistermaster, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3The three series (a robotech generation for each) are:
- Super Dimension Fortress Macross
- Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross
- Genesis Climber Mospeada
Mospeada is the one with the motorcycles - inactive, on 08/18/2008, -4/+7NANIIIIIII????
- vectorjohn, on 08/18/2008, -1/+4Not an anime or manga, but Chrono Trigger. I think it could make a pretty badass movie.
- shadowman99, on 08/18/2008, -1/+4Sorry if I offended you. I should learn to enjoy a good Tractor Pull competition or NASCAR like you.
- Brododium, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3"Imagine a live action Hollywood version of any Hayao Miyazaki story."
If they so much as go NEAR My Neighbour Totoro or Nausicaa, I will flip out, they're perfectly understandable by American audiences already, plus they may cut out some of the environmentalist/anti-war messages. So much would be lost in translation. - Skab, on 08/18/2008, -2/+5All I want is a remastered akira with the ORIGINAL English sub. or a torrent of the original the re-released with the new dialog and voices is horrible.
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3FLCL makes more sense than you can possibly imagine. It just might take a few watches to understand.
