- gramophone, on 07/19/2008, -1/+56No Watchmen?
- dedmond29, on 07/19/2008, -0/+28What about Dark Knight Returns? - regardless of the current hype, that 4 part series from Frank Miller essentially changed the way Batman (and maybe to a greater extent) DC Comics were perceived for good.
- TwoKill, on 07/19/2008, -0/+20I was thinking, this is a cool list to see right as I begin reading Watchmen, and then I realized it was a pretty crappy lsit.
- holyreality, on 07/20/2008, -0/+15what about watchmen, sandman, preacher and cerebus?
- xtinamo, on 07/19/2008, -0/+14It does say there will be a part 2, but it is ridiculous that neither Sandman nor Watchmen are on this list. Spiderman and Superman aren't exactly "outside the mainstream" either.
- rearlgrant, on 07/19/2008, -0/+14I'll show my age. I'd include:
Daredevil "Death of Electra" series
X-Men "Dark Phoenix Saga" series
X-Men Graphic Novel #1 "God Loves, Man Kills"
Phoenix's last soliloquy at the end of X-Men #138 had an impact on me that I still cannot put into words. - ekday, on 07/19/2008, -2/+13Never been a huge comic book fan (although I loved Calvin & Hobbes), but seeing these old-school comics got me interested. I'm also surprised there's no Watchmen - that was the first comic book I ever got.
- inactive, on 07/20/2008, -2/+12why is it important that i read them?
- inactive, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8100 Bullets. Winner of 2 Eisner awards. It talks about the New World Order secret society.
- inactive, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8Baah...
that list was all about the 'first appearences" most of them were poorly written and drawn, and remembered for being the starting point of something good...
Give me some graphic novels with some depth then ill digg this. - rearlgrant, on 07/19/2008, -0/+6edit - damn spelling checker - I thought I had kept it Elektra. It's Elektra.
- kingUssop, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6Meh, a bunch of mainstream #1 issue comics. Pass. Some alternative stuff if you like me don't digg any of that: Watchmen and The Sandman, probably the two most literate, epic, dramatic examples of comics escaping formulaic fodder and the author's really weaving a creative, awe-inspiring tale. And just for fun, read The Maxxx and Johnny The Homicidal Maniac
- Shadowhawk109, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5V for Vendetta?
Comic is a hellova lot different than the movie. - RobotKeaton, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5I don't understand why a bunch of poorly written origin stories are must read material. It's bizarre that they didn't include storylines, but individual issues. But I'll throw Bone and The Goon as must reads. And perhaps any of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sales "color" series.
- WhiteMike87, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5X-Men FTW
- solesoul, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4I literally just read Watchmen today, because I saw the trailer and got interested. It deserves the hype. Rorschach is the man.
- inactive, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4Miricleman is better than all these too...
- Gotar, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5Don't wrinkle the plastic cover! For gods sake don't touch it!
- Shogi, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5Watchmen
Ultimates
Wanted
House of M saga
Onslaught saga
And many more, all important comics. Most of this list is just first appearances of the who's who. Pretty half-assed. - evilhomestereo, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Buried for no Watchmen
- wexmajor, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Buried for portraying the Comics Code Authority in a positive light. "More than a cautionary label, the code ensured that any comic bearing its insignia would be completely free of questionable content." Are you ***** kidding me? That ***** was a curbstomp that the medium is still in intensive care from. A cautionary label would have been roughly five million times more preferable.
- beck5, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4what about the BEANO? thats a comic!
- renemartini, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3For those comic lovers, what do you think of the current directions comics are going? I feel its so fragmented and scattered as in storyline.
- Equinox2012, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Those are all pivotal comics. While alot of you guys name some awesome titles, I do have to give it to the list. Without those, with the exception of Yellow Kid, the names and titles you guys mention would not have been.
- Rustbelt, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4If we're basing this list purely on "importance", it fails. Entertaining stories utilizing great artwork that make people think is what's important, just as it is with any work of fiction. I would add Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, From Hell, Planetary, Preacher, 100 Bullets, Daredevil Born Again, Torso, and Powers.
Each of those is infinitely more thought provoking than a gimmick like the Death of Superman. - Balgor, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3God Loves, Man Kills, along with The Dark Knight Returns are two of my all time favorites.
I'd add them to this list along with Watchmen, Batman: Year One, and Xmen: Days of Future Past. - vichussmith, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Watchmen took part in changing the tone of comics today. It wasn't a first appearance of a classic character or anything, but if you trivialize its importance to comics, then you haven't been reading comics past the 80s.
- PabloIV, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2You can knock half of the Origin books out. Sure they introduced incredibly important and relevant characters but in most cases its what those characters eventually became, which was really cool and worthy of notice.
Looking at you Mr. Howlett - aserer511, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Read Venom #1 Lethal Protector to see just how much they butchered Venom's backstory in Spiderman 3
- rodrigo74, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Good, all we need now is to have this wrapped in a single torrent.
- cesclaveria, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2if it weren't for awful brand new day, I would add to the list "Civil War #2", the issue where Spider-Man reveals his identity to the general public.
- Pensi, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3No Sandman?
- rodrigo74, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Is Watchmen the new Dark Knight?
- rearlgrant, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Yeah, Days of Future Past is one of the best series ever -- epic, in the classical sense of the word, and able to do it in two issues. Claremont knows how to tell a story.
I'm familiar with Watchmen, I'll check that out some more. I've never gotten into Batman, but I'll check out that title too. - soulsuck, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Seduction of The Innocent -the bane of comic books- is on the list yet there's no Watchmen, V for Vendetta, or Ronin?
- Niightwitch, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1They may have been poorly written and drawn, but they were historic....c'mon, it was 1939, 1940....of course the quality has gone up since then, but they were the first and deserve their place.
- SirBruce, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Normalman.
Someone should do a CGI-animated movie of Normalman. - rearlgrant, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I don't keep up much with comics anymore. I do try to read anything J. Michael Straczynski writes. I understand when people come to me and say "I can't follow this." I'm a bit of zealot when it comes to his writing, and I'm familiar with his style. Usually all I can say is "read the entire story, and then once you see the arc, go back and fill in the details."
Writing in story arcs, as is cannon today, is difficult, and when it's done poorly it's worse than bad single-issue stories. - fearofsociety, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1If you are into Vertigo type stuff check out:
DMZ, Northlanders, and Demo (all by Brian Wood...Demo is amazing)
Scalped and The Other Side (Jason Aaron...both are intense, violent, and fun)
Ex Machina and Y: The Last Man (Brian K. Vaughn...Ex Machina is way underrated) - X111, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I think the title should be '26 Important American Superhero Comic Books You May Want to Read', the rest of the world has produced some nice work over the past 150 years.
- ansatsu29, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1No "The Killing Joke" on the list???
- vichussmith, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I may want to read these- but they're all rare classic milestone issues! Wher can you read a copy of these? Rob an old collector? Maybe the title of this article was wrong. You cannot really read these, at least in their original form.
- applesd, on 02/05/2009, -0/+126 important comics, yes
The 26 "most" important comics, NO - doctorinfierno, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1And no Sin City, what the hell?
- rearlgrant, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Yeah, there is something to that. I have a number of republishings of the X-Men Fate/Death of the Phoenix saga. But none of them match the original color of the initial comics. I have one that has the entire story, which is great, but it's in black and white! Most republications seem like they are about mining for money than keeping the story alive.
- rexprime, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1what major comic milestone did watchmen make that hadn't already happen?
- tallulahvulture, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1yeah and what about archie comics?
- FearFactory, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2Adolescent Radioactive Blackbelt Hamsters
- jamesbickford, on 07/27/2008, -0/+0How is watchmen not in here, neither is V for Vendetta. wtf?
