xkcd presents: ZEALOUS CONFIG
xkcd.com — I'd add an apt description, but in the rush to post it on Digg, I haven't actually read it yet.
- 2537 diggs
- digg it
- fcruz1331, on 04/28/2008, -106/+12u beat me by 33 seconds.... one day ill submit xkcd and FINALLY get on the front page!!
- Kazanoe, on 04/28/2008, -4/+162That'll be the day xkcd doesn't make the front page. I promise.
- twrife, on 04/28/2008, -39/+1Look at my submissions...
- bluezinc, on 04/28/2008, -0/+36no
- otakugeek, on 04/28/2008, -0/+11I buried them all too.
- nickbarber, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2That happened to me. :(
- twrife, on 04/28/2008, -39/+1Look at my submissions...
- twiztidsinz, on 04/28/2008, -19/+47PLEASE! For the love of everything Digg ever stood for... STOP.
Digg is not an RSS feed reader -- we dont need the same webpages being posted every time they update.- dazparkour, on 04/28/2008, -3/+52I am not here because of XKCD. I went to XKCD for this a long time before it was on the front page.
I came here because of the comments ABOUT XKCD, which is the point of digg (since most people don't read articles).- twiztidsinz, on 04/28/2008, -17/+5oh *****!
And all this time I thought Digg was a 'Social News' site where one would READ AN ARTICLE then come back and COMMENT ON THE STORY ALONG WITH OTHERS. I didn't realize that NOT RTFA was indended now.
But it still doesn't change the fact that Digg is not supposed to have the same page posted 3 days a week every week simply for the sake of posting the page. If the comic was relevant or satirical of something current or makes a statement about some 'hot topic' fine... but posting a webcomic thats updated what, 3 times a week? -JUST- for the sake of posting it AND on top of that blatantly rushing to get it 'first' is not what Digg was meant for.- qwerter, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3"And all this time I thought Digg was a 'Social News' site where one would READ AN ARTICLE then come back and COMMENT ON THE STORY ALONG WITH OTHERS."
Er, yeah. That's pretty much what he said.
- qwerter, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3"And all this time I thought Digg was a 'Social News' site where one would READ AN ARTICLE then come back and COMMENT ON THE STORY ALONG WITH OTHERS."
- specialK16, on 04/28/2008, -1/+21Too bad most comments on XKCD submissions suck most of the times.
- saisumimen, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1>suck most of the times
>most of the times
>of the times
>the times
>times
You have no idea how right you are.
- twiztidsinz, on 04/28/2008, -17/+5oh *****!
- mhuggins, on 04/28/2008, -3/+15I enjoy XKCD, but it's not a website that I think to visit unless I come across it on Digg. As such, I rather enjoy that they make it to the front page frequently.
- uhhNo, on 04/28/2008, -12/+1Your fortune:
You will die a horrible death.
- uhhNo, on 04/28/2008, -12/+1Your fortune:

- Kazanoe, on 04/28/2008, -6/+80Actually, it's *auto*config.
Frankly, I prefer the manual way. - sil3ntmac, on 04/28/2008, -52/+26"Ctrl-C? Hah... Deleting partitions..."

- ruddy, on 04/28/2008, -1/+4no ones written an auto submit program yet?
- npsken, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5captcha
And within the time an average home computer could crack the captcha, another digg user would have submitted it

- kalleanka, on 04/28/2008, -9/+47Don't worry guys, I beat there are a bunch of geeks out there who have written scripts for auto posting XKCD as soon as they come out. No way you guys can beat their scripts and MANUALLY submitted the story and be first.

- ConfuciusOne, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4*grabs pitchfork*
- greeniemeani, on 04/28/2008, -12/+3XCKD is usually funny, but this one was not.
- Danar, on 04/28/2008, -1/+4Thats what people have been saying the last 10 xkcd's that have been on the front page.
- greeniemeani, on 04/28/2008, -3/+2Which is also basically true...

- LRE13, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4BOOOOO YOU MALADJUSTED HARPIE!!!!!!!!!!
- tech42er, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1XKCD is generally only funny if you get it. Read the disclaimer under the comic.

- hazard99, on 04/28/2008, -25/+8I never understand these comics.

- Flashman, on 04/28/2008, -24/+8CTRL-C? I don't get it.
- Xanrez, on 04/28/2008, -3/+25In old school systems (as in terminal access), CTRL-C == break (stop and get the fsck out!)
- fatrandy13, on 04/28/2008, -0/+22or modern day *nix systems...
- Jektal, on 04/28/2008, -2/+10Or in the Windows command prompt (terminal; yes - old school; ...well damnit... you got me...)
- blagoaw, on 04/28/2008, -1/+3I'm probably not the only one who initially thought you were literally talking about outdated school computer systems, because oldschool was separated by a space. It didn't become clear to me until I read Jektal's comment. And yes, the command line lives on.
- jimthenglishman, on 04/28/2008, -3/+1dugg for "fsck"
- jimthenglishman, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1i guess you guys who dugg me down don't get *nix puns?
- fatrandy13, on 04/28/2008, -0/+22or modern day *nix systems...
- consoneo, on 04/28/2008, -1/+17Ctrl-C is a terminator key combo in most command prompt systems.
- Orion682, on 04/28/2008, -14/+1Ctrl +C ALSO closes Windows in most GUI applications. It's basically a shortcut for either close or break.
- daok, on 04/28/2008, -3/+14Ctrl+C is for Copy in most Gui application.... not close... Ctrl+C break in console...

Ctrl+C is for Copy in most Gui application.... not close... Ctrl+C break in console...- blagoaw, on 04/28/2008, -2/+0I played a part in that. What can I say, it just felt right. Would you prefer 5, 5, 3? I didn't think so.
- jncro, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5Epic Fail
- Orion682, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Wow... I have CLEARLY lost my mind @_@
- daok, on 04/28/2008, -3/+14Ctrl+C is for Copy in most Gui application.... not close... Ctrl+C break in console...
- blagoaw, on 04/28/2008, -2/+0These comments are making me feel old.
- legendxx, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2Digg used to be a technology site. Now it's a up and coming youtube/myspace/facebook site as far as the user demographics.
- tech42er, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1How so? THey should simply make you feel smart.Rest assured we still use the command line all the time.
- AronT, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3Aw, don't digg the guy down - at least he didn't say "Shouldn't it be Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V?"
- Xanrez, on 04/28/2008, -3/+25In old school systems (as in terminal access), CTRL-C == break (stop and get the fsck out!)
- jamezracer, on 04/28/2008, -8/+208ctrl-c is used to end or stop a script. normally used if something goes horrible wrong while coding and you get stuck in a loop or can't wait for it to timeout.
- noseeme, on 04/28/2008, -20/+117Thanks Professor. Now let me teach you the wonders of the reply button.
- daizaru, on 04/28/2008, -1/+39Not everyone is a terminal user, it helps to give context to the people who are thinking control-c is to copy stuff to the clipboard and not getting the joke. Shame on him for trying to share some knowledge, I don't see evidence that he was trying to reply.
- driftwood07, on 04/28/2008, -1/+20i agree . to most digg users ctrl c is probably nothing more than 'copy' and the joke made no sense
- pero69, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1or the fun the accidental "reply all" can bring.
- stev31h, on 04/28/2008, -1/+3I didnt see any of the comments dugg down confused about ctrl-c, so a "reply" would have been unwarranted.
- asskicker32, on 04/28/2008, -3/+39Oh, well let me tell you about a reply button. Back in my day, we didnt have reply buttons. If you wanted to reply to something, you had to start a new thread with the subject of "Regarding what that guy was talking about, my appropriate rebuttal is below:" and send 14 telegrams (We called them Liberty Letters) to the Major news outlets across the country. In 12 days, or when President Roosevelt (Teddy, not that young punk who ran us into war) decided it was ready, you were able to submit your rebuttal to the original poster. Once your original thread was replied to (Usually 8 weeks, since our teletype secretary was pretty backed up), you could read what you posted. This whole process was stared with a big wooden handle, which we called the "answering handle". Of course, back then, it wasnt really a handle at all, more of a wooden bar that splintered into your hand when you pulled it. Not that anyone pulled it, because anytime anyone had anything to say, they would usually just say it. That was our way back then; much more peaceful times...
- Pritchard, on 04/28/2008, -0/+8I remember those days. Things were better back then.
- daverave999, on 04/28/2008, -0/+9Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

- SQLserver, on 04/28/2008, -2/+7Was it sad that I wondered how one could not possibly know that?
- iiBeLiEvE, on 04/28/2008, -0/+10I thought it meant copy =(
- Asheis, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1Me too :( non-techies ftw. ;)

- kevman459, on 04/28/2008, -24/+166"I'd add an apt description, but in the rush to post it on Digg, I haven't actually read it yet."
So in an effort to be the first person to submit this you:
* Didn't add a description
* Used a misworded vague title
* Didn't upload a thumbnail of the actual comic
Awesome.- Kakemonstere, on 04/28/2008, -2/+36Whoooooosh!
- KnutTheBear, on 04/28/2008, -0/+25Front page formula.
- DrCyclops, on 04/28/2008, -2/+10Essence of Digg.
- Pritchard, on 04/28/2008, -0/+17Thumbnail of actual comic? Isn't that what ruins comics?
- mattwalton56, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1ALL HAIL THE ALGORITHM!!
- rivalius13, on 04/28/2008, -3/+64Alt title: I hear this an option in the latest Ubuntu release
- MacTyler, on 04/28/2008, -4/+7wait what!? how did you find that?
- t0x2c, on 04/28/2008, -3/+8Wooosh.

- MacTyler, on 04/28/2008, -1/+12Actually I was just kidding...
- smrekar, on 04/28/2008, -2/+5don't worry i just discovered it last month. i posted it and got buried. some people dont know this. what diggers fail to realize is that there are new people joining digg everyday and so the XKCD cartoons are new to some people all of the time.
- xz9925, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3if no one has given you the answer its the alt img txt.. either hover your mouse over the img for a sec or too and you should see it.. if in firefox and it looks incomplete, the only way i've found to read the full alt txt is to right click the img and view the properties and highlight the alt txt and it should scroll so you can read it all..
- t0x2c, on 04/28/2008, -3/+8Wooosh.
- seanc6610, on 04/28/2008, -0/+11oh man if you're not being sarcastic, you have hours of reading xkcd alt titles ahead of you.
- MacTyler, on 04/28/2008, -4/+7wait what!? how did you find that?
- smacksaw, on 04/28/2008, -1/+77Often the race to post this first is funnier than the comic itself.
Someone should start keeping score for the people who submit this as it's turned into some sort of contest. Whoever gets the most submissions loses.- surKaz, on 04/28/2008, -0/+8We need a 'Race to submit and all related fights' section?
- smacksaw, on 04/28/2008, -0/+8A subset of the xkcd section.
- DivinoAG, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Not really, Zero Punctuation would go there as well.

- bosssmiley, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1And then xkcd.com could do a comic on it...

- 3rdDay, on 04/28/2008, -5/+35Why not just write a script for Digg to autopost every new xkcd/Cracked top 10 list/Ars Technica post on linux/Firefox beta release announcement and ban any new submissions?
- Jektal, on 04/28/2008, -0/+9Seriously. Just pull the headline from the sources' RSS feeds so we get an accurate thumbnail and title from the author.
- whitemage, on 04/28/2008, -0/+16forgot about zero punctuation
- smacksaw, on 04/28/2008, -0/+23Not only that, but to randomly submit it between the names of zaibatsu, msaleem and MrBabyMan. That way we'd have the "funny" of the comic and then the "funny" of people bitching about them. Also, it could randomly give 39 Diggs from unsuspecting users so it goes FP.
It would be
"Front page and 39 Diggs?" -21 diggs
"Figures zaibatsu would post it!" +120 diggs
"Ha, I get it. Sharp is like plus, plus" +255 diggs - daizaru, on 04/28/2008, -1/+5Stop crying about how digg has gone to hell and move on. It happens.
Myspace becomes facebook becomes twitter... people move on. Find/make a less corrupted site to stick to tech news and so forth but digg has been a site of the masses for a long time now.- aaabatteries, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1reddit FTW!
- celkin, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2You forgot Scientology, the RIAA, Creative, Obama, Clinton, and Bush!

- noseeme, on 04/28/2008, -4/+28Whew, it's a good thing I saw xkcd on the front page today, otherwise I would have had to go to the site myself!
This xkcd race on digg is ridiculous. - Croaton, on 04/28/2008, -3/+82When xkcd does a comic about how Obama and Ron Paul have debated evolution Diggs gonna implode...
- vertexoflife, on 04/28/2008, -0/+22We have to get Mac Windows and Linux in there somehow.

- twiztidsinz, on 04/28/2008, -12/+7@Digg Staff: Can we have a xkdc section?
That way I can uncheck it from being displayed.
It would be the first time I use that setting.- dazparkour, on 04/28/2008, -3/+2Digg staff can I have a "I don't want to see this" button, so when I visit comments to read about a given subject, I don't have to read the 80% of the comments from people whining they do not want to read about it?!
(Statistic made up)- mikesbaker, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1i think a better idea would be if kevin rose just submitted all of the xkcds that way we don't end up with "I'd add an apt description, but in the rush to post it on Digg, I haven't actually read it yet."
- twiztidsinz, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1But he shouldnt need to...
From xkcd.com itself:
RSS Feed - Atom Feed
Livejournal Comic Feed: [info]xkcd_rss
Livejournal Blag Feed: [info]xkcd_blag
Even if it didnt, all you would have to do is check it (daily / when you know the usual updates occur) its not like they update it on a whim or that its a 'breaking comic' which needs to be read a.s.a.p., its your typical webcomic -- updated on a semi-regular, scheduled basis.
- MacTyler, on 04/28/2008, -1/+3Hey twizt,
This is the Digg.com staff here, we have put two web engineers on the product, so expect it to be completed by this wednesday. We will send you an email once it is completed. Can't believe we hadn't thought of that yet!
Thanks,
The Digg Team- tech42er, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1You say it'll be done by Wednesday? So I gues that means we can expect it in August or so?

- jboyd88, on 04/28/2008, -11/+3Am I the only one that doesn't get XKCD comics? And even when I do get them (like this one) I realise they aren't funny anyway?
- loconet, on 04/28/2008, -1/+5Yes you are
- stargatesteve, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3yes, you are. That's not a question?
- mikesbaker, on 04/28/2008, -3/+5thats not the point of xkcd - the point is to get it on the front page first
- Danar, on 04/28/2008, -5/+0yea, mikesbaker is correct, none of them are funny(are they supposed to be?) Its just the stupid race.
- alphashade, on 04/28/2008, -4/+1You are not alone. I get a large majority of his comics but find them very unfunny. Mostly because he is trying to play off being a hardcore nerd and all I imagine is other techys going "Hey he uses programming language and techy phrases in his stick figure comics! I CAN RELATE TO THAT!"
- blagoaw, on 04/28/2008, -2/+0When people first started pointing it out to me, I thought it was severely overrated.. but then again it's got a certain niche and it's a comfortable thing to come back to from time to time.. so it has a place. Sometimes it's got good ideas that it implements badly, other times it has a not-so-good idea that hits a homerun with certain people, and other times it's sort of interesting but isn't really funny. A successful comic doesn't necessarily have to be a clown as long as it's comfortable as a routine.
- nebion, on 04/28/2008, -1/+3While I'm a reasonably big xkcd fan, you almost certainly aren't the only one. It's obviously not for everyone.
Some people aren't going to understand all of them (you have to know quite a bit about computers/math/science or people related to these fields for some of them), and some people aren't going to appreciate the type of humor involved.
Personally, when I first found xkcd, I liked it so much that I Immediately read all of them published so far (which took quite a while), and appreciating xkcd is a pretty good predictor of the kind of person I'm likely to get along with well. Still, even I find some of them kind of pointless (perhaps 5-10%). - smrekar, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3What was your college major? perhaps you are not the target audience.
- formido, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0If you didn't find this one funny, then it seems really, really unlikely that you "got" it. Honestly, did you know what ctl-c does when you read it?
- AQUANETA, on 04/28/2008, -10/+2Oh wait a minute. WEP is always crackable! Well, as long as there is one client connected. Really! I've done it...
- glinsvad, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1I think that's the 'zealous' part of the joke...
- formido, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0No, it's not.
- formido, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0You can digg me down all you want, but if you think that's what zealous is referring to, you're quite wrong.
- formido, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0No, it's not.
- glinsvad, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1I think that's the 'zealous' part of the joke...
- Niubai, on 04/28/2008, -8/+2I didn't get, seriously. Am I not geek enough ?
- mikesbaker, on 04/28/2008, -7/+1no its just not funny - there is a moronic following of xkcd on digg as evidenced by the poster's description and also the comments on this thread. ***** mouth breathers
- Extracheese, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5The joke is that the autoconfig does whatever is necessary to tap that secure wifi connection, including kidnapping the children of the family that owns the wifi connection, to use them as leverage. It's meant to poke fun at how usually when you try to connect through wifi, you get messages like "repairing connection" and so on.
- blagoaw, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2When setting up a computer with networking for the first time, it's not uncommon to connect to a neighbor's unsecured wifi at first either out of convenience or accident. On one occasion I almost changed the password on my neighbor's router before it dawned on me that the router I was connected to might not be mine (since it was a similar model and they apparently hadn't changed the default password). When it comes to wifi, a badly thought-out autoconfig could really do some things that it shouldn't.
- formido, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Probably not yet. It's funny because of the unlikely extremes to which autoconfig is going to to connect. It's funny because he starts to get a little doubtful when he sees it trying to break a secured router's encryption. And it's really funny because he tries to abort a script (by pressing ctl-c) when he realizes that it's actually committing criminal acts to connect his wifi. As a bonus, the "script" involves automating apparently human "agents" to complete the process.
This comic has several of the components Scott Adams has identified are necessary for humor. Technically, if you didn't find it hilarious, you didn't get it. - formido, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1It's funny because of the extreme lengths to which autoconfig is willing to go to make a connections. It's funny because of his growing concern when it says it's trying to break the encryption on his neighbor's secuired network. It's funny because, once he realizes it's going to criminal lengths to secure a wifi connection, he tries to abort it by pressing ctl-c. This last is even funnier because autoconfig has employed apparently human "agents" to complete its task.
This comic has several of the necessary elements that Scott Adams has identified are necessary for humor. Technically, it was hilarious. If you didn't get it, then yes, you probably aren't (yet?) geek enough.

- TheKarmaPolice, on 04/28/2008, -1/+5i just found out that the guy who does these comics went to my college a few years ago. it's too bad we never overlapped.

- nebion, on 04/28/2008, -1/+5While I understand what you mean, "overlapped" sounds hilariously like a euphemism...

i dare you to find another way to take that.
- Kamael, on 04/28/2008, -11/+5Ok, some of the xkcd comics are great, but some of them are total crap, and this is a perfect example.
- blagoaw, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1Some work for me and some don't. It's hit and miss. This one appealed to me a bit because I'm a little sheepish from connecting to other peoples' wifi under various circumstances, and I have a habit of thinking about the vulnerability of things and how far it can go.. but there are also a lot of others that don't appeal to me. Just the way it goes..
Actually, the "field agent" bit threw me off for a second and damaged the humor (like a joke being explained). At first I was thinking that these field agents were like FBI agents, as if the configuration had contacted the authorities about the illegal actions that it had taken in the user's name, but then I realized that these were agents who worked for the software. xkcd doesn't seem to be very good at running the strip by test readers to work out those kinks.. though you could say that's some of its charm.- smrekar, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1i made the same mistake, but by the last panel i had figured it out on my own. This was a good one for me. Some of the programming ones are over my head.

- givemereplay, on 04/28/2008, -12/+3This isn't even funny. Stop fooling yourselves, pretending that XKCD is witty or funny.
But I know that won't happen. Just go put on your sports jacket and go to starbucks with your other pseudo-intellectual friends and discuss Nietzsche. You're almost as cool as XKCD, really.- PhoenixAvatar2, on 04/28/2008, -1/+6I'm sorry, I was too busy discussing Nietzsche with my friends at starbucks while I put on my sports jacket to hear what you said. - CrushThemTorg, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1I think givemereplay is just cranky because he doesn't get the comics. Perhaps he should go watch some Carlos Menica. He does make funny noises.

- thedude13, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4great comic, only one real issue: WEP is a vulnerability all by itself. I inadvertently cracked my company's WEP AP (didn't know it was ours at the time and in my defense I was bored) in < 10 minutes using aireplay-ng and aircrack-ptw.
- 4d669, on 04/28/2008, -6/+4Randall doesn't really know much about computers. WEP keys get cracked in 90 seconds or less nowadays.
