- dylio, on 05/06/2008, -8/+5I'm 16 years old, wanting to be a lawyer. Do you suggest just straight into law school?
(My ambition is to become a politician one day)- j0ker666, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Going to law school would be better because otherwise you are wasting time and money (I'm in the UK not sure if its the same in the USA) + the GDL (conversion course) is harder than doing the straight law path
I wouldn't use digg comments for gaining any serious career info though and do some proper research!- dylio, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Heh, I always have trouble interpreting the cookie cutter information about colleges, I prefer to actually communicate with people who've gone though the process/are going through the process.
- bkalinow, on 05/06/2008, -0/+10If you're in the US, you can major in just about any of the liberal arts programs, although political science is probably one of the most common pre-law majors. Philosophy is another good one. Then you take the LSAT, then you apply to law school, then you go to law school. You can't just go straight to law school without getting a four-year degree or going into a pre-law program, but I'm not sure how pre-law works.
- mizike, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3I don't know why someone dugg you down, that's exactly right. In Canada it's *technically* possible to get into law school with only 2 or 3 years of undergraduate education, but the competition to get into law school is so fierce that an undergraduate degree is basically mandatory (When I was accepted to a law school in Ontario, the provincial admissions rate was about 10-15% of applicants were accepted, I think that number has gone up recently but I've still not met anyone either while I was in school or professionally that didn't have, at minimum, a 4 year degree prior to going to law school). Also, don't pick your undergrad education based upon wanting to get into law school. There are no set pre-requisites like there are for med school. When I was in law school I met people from a wide variety of academic backgrounds; although poli-sci and history are still the two most common, recently (hard) science majors have been in high demand (and are very well paid upon graduation) as in order to work in patent law, it generally requires a technical understanding of what you're trying to patent, as such, people with engineering and biology backgrounds can do quite well in that field (I personally find that field boring as dirt, and had a few problems convincing employers that, although I have a science degree, I do NOT want to work in patents).
Also, I responded with the assumption you're American (although my experiences are in Canada the systems are practically identical). If you're from Europe, likely you can go straight into law without an undergrad degree (I believe australia works the same way).

- icepick602, on 05/06/2008, -0/+7Do NOT do a "pre-law" major, most law schools actually prefer a liberal arts education, and learning how to write is most important. Study english, history, classics, poly sci, or whatever you want. Hard sciences also display a good work ethic and can get you into some really interesting parts of the law like intellectual property and patents. Make sure you actually want to go to law school before you commit to a liberal arts major because they aren't good for much else and law school sucks.
- Bkaufman, on 05/07/2008, -2/+4How about doing something useful with your life instead of being a lawyer/Politician? math and Science are harder, but they are so much more beneficial to society.
- tomis, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4Except that the politicians and the lawyers are the ones who fund and cut funding for the science. And really, which one affects our everyday lives more; a politician passing a law that makes something you do everyday illegal, a lawyer helping someone sue you over something that's not your fault, or a scientist discovering a new way to make men's penises hard years after nature intended.
- kanojo1969, on 05/07/2008, -5/+0I think suicide would be your best bet. Certainly would be the best result for the rest of us. Anyone who think the world needs more of either profession is just sucking up good oxygen that decent, non-parasitic people could use.
- UBERMAN5000, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2I'm in law school now and I went straight outta undergrad. I'm one of the younger people in my class. I think it all depends on the individual. If you're able to, I think it's best to go straight from college to law school instead of working a job that you don't want first. Also, icepick is right, law school sucks.
- j0ker666, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Going to law school would be better because otherwise you are wasting time and money (I'm in the UK not sure if its the same in the USA) + the GDL (conversion course) is harder than doing the straight law path
- GoneFishing, on 05/06/2008, -2/+11) I would recommend Political Science and Criminal Law (or other similar courses, we had Forensic Science) if you are interested to be a lawyer. 2) History or Philosophy, then plus Political Science, if you really made up your mind about being a politician. Double majoring shouldn't be that hard (its almost a norm nowadays).
Personally, I would suggest you not focus too much on Poli-Sci, it is a joke (sorry to you Poli-Sci people), my friend majored in Journalism and "accidentally" double majored Poli-Sci. She didn't even know until she got the letter to walk the gradation for two colleges at my University. Now, I don't want to bash my alma mater, let just say it's a good school in Top 50 of US.
By the way, being a lawyer to making big cash isn't necessarily true anymore. The increase in law school graduates is starting to drive down the AVERAGE income of lawyers. However, if you finish TOP of your class, or just happen to know people, then you might come away with the six-figure income. - dylio, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Holy *****, lots of responses. What about Civil Rights law? That's what interests me the most. Is that pretty tough to get into as well? Are the requirements essentially the same (undergrad)
- mizike, on 05/07/2008, -1/+0Generally that's a tough field to get into.....I would recommend doing a bunch of volunteering with civil rights organizations. It doesn't have to be alot, just a few hours a week. Basically you need to show a commitment in the field before someone will consider hiring you as a lawyer (unless you're hot ***** and graduate top of your law school class, at that point you can pretty much write your own ticket). "Social justice" (as it's known) can be really tough to get into as most of the potential places that could hire you out of law school don't have any money, and many can require you to work for free before they will hire you on full time. What this means is that predominantly only rich people (who can afford to work for free as they don't have crippling student debts) can get into that field, which is a huge problem as almost all social justice law deals with minority groups, which rich kids can have a tough time identifying with (George Bush for instance has been quoted as saying, after reading the grapes of wrath, that they were "too lazy and should have worked harder").
- TonyLocNE, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Sorry wrong reply button.
- dylio, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I guess I'll have to bust my balls if I want to represent social justice then, won't I?
Anyways, as an Indiana resident Notre Dame and Indiana University seem to be really good in-state schools. So that may ease my debt a wee-bit, not a whole lot, but some.
- TonyLocNE, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Sorry wrong reply button.
- TonyLocNE, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Your first year of law school will have you focus on a lot of contracts, torts, civil procedures, legal writing, etc. Your second year and third year, you will be able to dive into the area you really what to excel at, whether it be criminal, civil, corporate, labor, environmental, etc.
My advice to you is this.. Pick a major that will challenge you a lot. A lot of people on here will tell you to get your BS in Political Science, but it is not necessary. When law schools go through applications, they not only look at recommendations, your GPA and LSAT scores, they will also examine throughly the exact classes you have chosen for your undergraduate schooling. I, myself am a business major soon to be going into law, and aside from my core classes, I have chosen a variety of others such as debate, ethics, english and rhetoric, and psychology as many of my electives.
You will have a lot of time to choose what area of law you want to go into when you finally make it to the law school of your choice. So right now, study hard and take classes that will challenge you and expand your all around knowledge.
I hope this helped.. Good luck to you. - dylio, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Yep, that helped me a bunch. Thanks for replying to my post (as well to others). Being only 16, I most certainly will have a lot of time between now and graduating law school. So as I said, I cannot thank you enough for replying (addressing everyone as well)

- kingmanic, on 05/06/2008, -3/+15Money wise, your statistically better off being a Accountant then a scientist.
Science: 4-5 years of school to start making 30k when you graduate. Eventually peaking out at 120k with more training.
Accountant: 1-2 years of school to start making 30k when you graduate. Eventually peaking at '***** you money' with more training.- ulmedas, on 05/06/2008, -3/+5MMmmm....actuarial sciences, sooo exciting....
- sobe86, on 05/06/2008, -0/+22Yeah but if you're an accountant you have to tell people you're an accountant. And thats never going to be cool no matter how much money you're making...
- frankingeneral, on 05/06/2008, -0/+5Lawyer: 7 years of school, start at 6-figures, peak at Ernie McCracken "I can buy my way out of anything" money.
Also, if you have a solid research background and work as a poor research assitant you can become a patent attorney after a few years of doing research, they make the same as normal attorneys, and generally don't need law school to get started (though most go to law school at nights early in their careers).- GoneFishing, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3You will need to pass to Patent Bar Exam in order to even start the path of a Patent Attorney. I would be wise to go to law school and start focusing on Patent Law. I would recommend going to work for the US Patent and Trademark Office if you are not looking to graduate school just yet.
- frankingeneral, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Yeah but the patent bar is a joke, and unlike most state bar exams you do not need to have a law degree become a member, only a certain amount of science coursework. Most major firms will hire you w/o a law degree, and help you study for the Patent Bar and go to law school nights, provided you have a good background in science and research.
- PhildoVT, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0patent attorneys who went to law school make way more than patent agents who simply pass the bar exam
- GoneFishing, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3You will need to pass to Patent Bar Exam in order to even start the path of a Patent Attorney. I would be wise to go to law school and start focusing on Patent Law. - Zipko, on 05/06/2008, -0/+12From what I've heard from professors getting a Ph.D. and doing your own research or teaching is more of a lifestyle decision than a money one. They realize they can make more money in the private sector, but don't want to give up the laid back hours and getting to do something a little more fun than someone else's taxes.
- greeniemeani, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8You can make a lot more than 30k when you graduate if you graduate with a science degree (ie like Computer Science or Computer Engineering).
- W3bbo, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Indeed, I know a few CS doctorates in the industry who are now on 6-figure jobs... not with Google though. Think IBM, MSR, or Palo Alto.
- kingmanic, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4I'm a Cs grad and I make more then 30k in my starting job. But generally scientists start out with peanuts after their bachelors and graduate to slightly more peanuts after their masters and PhD.
- Akronos, on 05/06/2008, -1/+6Therein lies the difference between science and engineering. Engineers will start off with a high starting salary (60,000 to 70,000) with just a bachelors degree while scientists will probably need to do a PhD to do research, and they may still not make as much.
Computer engineering falls under the engineering department, obviously, while computer science can either fall under the liberal arts department or engineering department, I believe.- kingmanic, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4I've never seen it within the liberal arts. Mine is technically a math degree.
- darkstar949, on 05/06/2008, -0/+6Depends on the school, but computer science can either fall under the engineering department or math and sciences department. I've never heard of a school where computer science was considered to be a liberal arts degree due to the math that is needed for it.
- DyDx, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2It falls under the Engineering school at my undergrad university, but it really isn't engineering, and none of the CS people I know would say it belongs in the Engineering school.
But I guess it also doesn't belong as just a pure "science.." it's kind of in-between I suppose.
- DemonWasp, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Computer Science is kind to me, and to pretty well every other student at my university (University of Waterloo, of course)...the job I'm at right now is like $37k, and I'm a second-year student.
I'm just stuck hoping that this industry stays nice and strong.- kingmanic, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Despite what they say, the jobs aren't going anywhere. Almost every major outsourcing project has been a huge money guzzling debacle due to poor management more then anything. There will always be jobs that require physical proximity and proximity blunts managerial incompetences a bit. So while some corps do the off shoring thing decently and we may lose some US jobs, most other corps ***** it up royally and will pay double for you to fix it.
- Zipko, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1like kingmanic said, some stuff like help desk and basic network integration can be outsourced easily, but there's always going to be a local need for integration projects. You can't install and debug a new network without being on site. Coding can kind of be outsourced, but the requirement for good talent as well as the language barrier tend to keep those projects local too. The only thing an increase in outsourcing does it force the people at the bottom levels out of a job. If all you're qualified for is help desk support then you better start looking for new work or go to classes to build a better skillset. Anyone who's already talented doesn't need to worry about outsourcing.
- trappleton, on 05/06/2008, -0/+19Yeah, but if I were a scientist, I'd be proud of my job.

- rpebble, on 05/06/2008, -0/+5If you're making 30k as a "scientist", you didn't go to grad school. You aren't a scientist, you're a lab tech. Engineers pull in a lot more than that right off the bat, but so far as engineering grad school is concerned, Zipko is completely correct, it's definitely a lifestyle choice more than anything else. Also, as my adviser put it: "You become an engineer, it will never matter how much money you make, there will always be someone on top of you, telling you what to do, and THEY will have a PhD".

No, you could live without those things for sure.

Do what you love, and you'll lead a much happier life, regardless of how much cash you are making. Take it from someone who took the Finance route and is making great money but wishes he was doing something more constructive with his life besides helping the rich get richer.
- frankingeneral, on 05/06/2008, -1/+7There's more to life than money?
- sobe86, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4A guy I used to be friends with is doing management consultancy in London. He's making an absolute shagload of cash, but he basically has no time in his normal day to day schedule to spend it. It seems like all he uses his money for is nice suits and expensive lunches. I met him for the first time in 2 years recently, saw how much he'd changed, and decided right then and there that finance was not for me. I'm not signing my youth away for any amount of money.
- Zipko, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4I've got friends on that path. The way they look at it is they'll work 60-70 hours a week for a couple years if it gets them to an executive level where all you have to do is go to board meetings. At that point you're basically semi-retired by 40. Don't know if it's worth giving up your 20's to do but it's one way to look at it.
- passedoutghost, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0You can make even more money doing law. I've sold my soul and shat on it already :D
- Amadeus2490, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1***** your money!
- ulmedas, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2I am not entirely sure why anyone thinks being a researcher is a crumby career path. It is working out well enough for everyone I know that does it. Some of them have really fantastic gigs, and the rest are doing well enough for themselves. I don't think most are making millions, but not many people succeed in such goals. If your goal is climbing the corporate ladder, then it is probably not a wise path. Owning and running your own company on the other hand is a distinct (and commonly occurring) possibility. Look at Jeff Han. He was a lowly research scientist and he came up with a great device and great content (along with several grad students). Now less than two years after his debut, he is one of Time's most 100 most influential people. Incidentally, I suspect he is doing quit well for himself.
- Pinkertinkle, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1What percentage get that far? Commonly occurring? Is that 5% 20% 40%?
- ulmedas, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I have only anecdotal evidence. With that in mind, more than half of the people in my lab have their own companies (some making more money than others.) That is saying something, since the majority of the researchers are graduate students. And how many individuals manage to move into upper management of a corporation? Is it common?
Not everyone needs to make 500k a year to live a happy life. Most of the researchers I know are happy with their jobs, partly because they give something back instead of being a damned sponge on society. Go try to make millions if you like; if it makes you happy; if it is fulfilling, but don't dog on folks because they don't care to beat their heads against the wall, trying make more money than the gods.

That is saying something, since the majority of the researchers are graduate students. And how many individuals manage to move into upper management of a corporation? Is it common?
- Pinkertinkle, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1What percentage get that far? Commonly occurring? Is that 5% 20% 40%?
- armorking, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Honestly, people in the US especially do not like to jump into a science degree because it is "too hard." In my opinion, people really do not want to try anymore and the US is looking for fresh faces in the sciences. I'm not saying that we need less accountants, historians, geographers, writers, etc but that we need more scientists if the US wants to maintain the pace the rest of the world is setting.
If people do not know, grad schools will PAY for your education. Nearly every science Ph.D program is willing to pay one's tuition and give a stipend for living expenses. It's quite an excellent option these days. If people can keep a decent GPA, show that they have done research, and, most of all, enjoy what they are doing, anyone can get into a top grad school.
Finally, if anyone is doing something for the money, good luck. Ultimately, life becomes miserable and one will probably end up looking forward to the next Happy Hour at the Pub. Anyways, do something because you love it and everything will fall into place.
- kingmanic, on 05/06/2008, -3/+15Money wise, your statistically better off being a Accountant then a scientist.

- blackgt93, on 05/06/2008, -2/+14I think this is supposed to show life AFTER College. The title of this story is misleading and its confusing people, which is never a good thing because it scares them and makes them revert to an almost ape-like state, flinging verbal poo and whatnot.

- Iztikeit, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Most don't even get big ambitions outside of the usual $$$$ in their first few years. Then reality hits, college doesn't guarantee anything except huge amounts of debt. Fortunately I've survived three years (junior year is over tomorrow!!!!) with minute career aspirations in tact, and those are simply to be able to pay off my debts and be able to afford happy half-hour!

- JoshChan, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1It is not a problem of the major you idiots. It is the problem of not studying hard and being a competent young man whom employers appreciate. Do you know all the highest paying jobs for graduates like those in investment banks and consulting firms don't actually require you to have a relevant degree? It is just the stupid people without life goals and tenacity who ***** things all up.
