- billso, on 05/27/2008, -5/+441The Times has to explain why the jokes are funny...
- kenij, on 05/27/2008, -15/+374XKCD? Front page, here we come!
- IpHa, on 05/27/2008, -10/+313The only thing funnier than XKCD is watching people who don't understand it pretend it's funny.
- AManWithNoName, on 05/27/2008, -31/+235Buried as inaccurate.
I'm not very good at programming (I made it halfway through learning java before I got bored), and I still find XKCD to be awesome. Although, sometimes, it's just kinda meh. - gsadamb, on 05/27/2008, -3/+157Wisely, the New York Times published this article on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday.
- LessThanPerfect, on 05/27/2008, -6/+144It's always interesting to see journalists attempt to explain why the jokes are funny, and then label anyone who understands them as geeks. Anyway, it's nice to see the comic getting some recognition.
- mavownsyou, on 05/27/2008, -6/+137Was I the only one disappointed it wasn't a new comic but was only a story?
Oh well, good read. - tuxidomasx, on 05/27/2008, -11/+131"It's a UNIX system! I know this!"
--Alexis, Jurassic Park - awesometastic1, on 05/27/2008, -5/+92holy cow, xkcd's alexa rank shot through the roof with the release of this nytimes article: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/ ...
- girldrinkdrunk, on 05/27/2008, -2/+81I know that some people will occasionally complain that XKCD is not always funny, but really if you look at the strip as a whole, I don't believe it is meant to be funny all the time. Some of the strips are incredibly poignant and thought provoking. I often get a chuckle from the strips, but sometimes one of the panels will make me just stop in my tracks, and think about life in a different (usually wider perspective) way. And I think that's just grand.
- inspecality, on 05/27/2008, -5/+78You can always go to xkcd.com... you don't need to access it from Digg.
- captinherb, on 05/27/2008, -10/+82One of my favorites
http://xkcd.com/154/ - cdmarcus, on 05/27/2008, -7/+73I happen to disagree with you... I think XKCD is funny. Not everyone has your sense of humor... respect that and move on.
- bitcloud, on 05/27/2008, -0/+58cmon... the guy makes comics about "geohashing" by encrypting a date with md5 to arrive at geographical coordinates...
he's still very much ours... - richgustavson, on 05/27/2008, -1/+58"Mr. Munroe believes that analyzing a joke is like dissecting a frog — it can be done, but the frog dies." We will now do exactly that.
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -0/+54"Ah-Ah-Ah you didn't say the magic word."
-Dennis' Computer - paranoiabacon, on 05/27/2008, -2/+52Oh my god i can almost hear his ego being bloated.
- khaavren, on 05/27/2008, -3/+50making xkcd no longer just ours.
- berfarah, on 07/08/2009, -4/+43NYTimes makes it sound like all the jokes are about programming...
I have never programmed and I love xkcd - all the romantic jokes really appeal to me, as it seems romanticism is something that is found less and less in our hectic world. - VinnieDaMac, on 05/27/2008, -1/+35Two peanuts were walking down the street, one was assaulted.
- fjf314, on 05/27/2008, -0/+31What I really want to find is someone who 100% COMPLETELY knows everything there is in Java. Being a walking API would be awesome.
- Rexxy, on 05/27/2008, -2/+33The universe started in 1970. Anyone claiming to be over 38 is lying about their age.
- bwdd, on 05/27/2008, -0/+29Ohh... so the magic word was "sudo".
Silly Samuel L. Jackson. - inspecality, on 05/27/2008, -1/+30HAHAHAHA rabbit.
- Lith25, on 05/27/2008, -3/+31NONE of the time it's kinda meh.
There, did we cover all the appropriate adjectives? good. - sexybobo, on 05/27/2008, -0/+26I was the only one to show up at my coordinate last Saturday i was sad.
- JohnDavis730, on 05/27/2008, -6/+31is anyone else fond of the NYT website?
- desuexmachina, on 05/27/2008, -3/+26I don't know UNIX but I think XKCD is mostly funny... mostly.
- iofthestorm, on 05/27/2008, -0/+22Nah, I would think most people who read XKCD know of the Unix epoch.
- teddyrux, on 05/27/2008, -4/+26“We’ve been getting a lot more efficient,” he said. “We were losing money on every T-shirt sold overseas for a while.” (But you can make it up in volume, I helpfully suggested. He moved on.)
That's a business joke by the way. The point is that, if you're losing money in variable costs (t-shirt sales for example), adding to the volume only makes you lose more money! - KaneElson, on 05/27/2008, -0/+22Unless producing in volume reduces the production/distribution costs.
- bliz, on 05/27/2008, -0/+22"Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested and the frog dies of it." by EB White.
- inspecality, on 05/27/2008, -0/+21Diggs do not equal views.
- ThreeDee912, on 05/27/2008, -2/+22For some reason, I have never been asked to login to view a NYTimes article. Don't know why.
- r00tus3r, on 05/27/2008, -3/+23The 'meh' are probably the ones that you don't get.
- AttackingHobo, on 05/27/2008, -2/+21You got halfway through learning an entire programming language? You sir are a god.
- hiopilot, on 05/27/2008, -1/+19DEL?!?!?!
sudo rm Adam4200 - ThreeDee912, on 05/27/2008, -3/+21I have always have been able to see NYTimes without registration...
- foldor, on 05/27/2008, -6/+22How do you "halfway" learn Java? What point is "halfway". That doesn't make any sense to me.
- fugeelama, on 05/27/2008, -1/+17As if seeing it on the front page every day isn't recognition enough...
- s3rgi0, on 05/27/2008, -0/+15How did you manage to misspell xkcd twice? In the same way, no less.
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -2/+17comiCS
- treyd, on 05/27/2008, -0/+15I would consider that to be about 1%.
- Twine52, on 05/27/2008, -4/+19Many of the comics relate to past strips. The spiders are an ongoing theme.
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -2/+16And some are just hilarious
http://xkcd.com/275/ - ArachnidDude, on 05/27/2008, -2/+16sudo is for losers. real men have unrestricted root access enabled, coworkers they can trust, and an elegant firewall.
- Slipkey, on 05/27/2008, -3/+17First, good for Randall Munroe for getting the extra press. Those who say that the publicity from the Times article somehow lessens his comics are being selfish and small. He deserves it and, whether you like his work or not, there are millions of people who wait with anticipation for his next strip. That says something in itself.
Second, I think the Times article was incredibly condescending, even demeaning. It's true that there are a lot of strips that require technical frame of reference, but an great number of them are very universal, incredibly articulate and poignant. I don't think the Times wen't beyond the premise of their headline. - Darksider, on 05/27/2008, -0/+14A sandwich walks into a bar, sits on a bar stool and orders a beer. The bartender says, I'm sorry but we don't serve food here.
- Campog, on 05/27/2008, -0/+14I know a few of the "walking API" types, but they tend to annoy me so much that I avoid ever asking them for help anyway. Google never tries to tell me about its latest foray into the World of Dungeons and Dragons.
