- Unskillful, on 04/11/2008, -5/+971I would laugh, but a part of me honestly thinks that the second guy is actually retarded.
- w00kiekrisp, on 04/11/2008, -23/+149THAT'S why it's funny!
/hell- 10lbhammer, on 04/11/2008, -2/+25I started watching the video with the thought in mind that: "I'm not gonna laugh at the handicapped guy. I'm not gonna laugh at the..." etc.
mission failed. - hammburglar, on 04/12/2008, -1/+6your right that is why it was funny. because he was still better than the first guy and better than lil wayne.
- 10lbhammer, on 04/11/2008, -2/+25I started watching the video with the thought in mind that: "I'm not gonna laugh at the handicapped guy. I'm not gonna laugh at the..." etc.
- ogmak, on 04/11/2008, -1/+58I feel bad for laughing. Just looking at his facial expressions cracked me up.
- Verz, on 04/12/2008, -0/+21He tatooed the lyrics under his eyelids.
- Jawsh91, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Your comment sent me to the fiery pits of hell.
Thanks for the laughter.

- RubberBinder, on 04/11/2008, -0/+32Then why didn't you spell it like that?
- themoose, on 04/11/2008, -0/+22You know you're typing and not speaking, right?
- kiddirt, on 04/11/2008, -0/+18ADIDAS247's comment is P H fat.
- noahgelman, on 04/11/2008, -4/+89I stopped watching at 2:29, i honestly couldnt take anymore of that
- dmjarrington, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1You missed the best part, my friend.
- kansai22, on 04/11/2008, -8/+15I completely agree. I don't know if the other kids were making fun of him or trying to make him feel like a part of the project but it was wrong anyone I look at it.
- rockefeller2, on 04/12/2008, -0/+16"but it was wrong anyone I look at it."
- narcofiche, on 04/12/2008, -0/+28Somebody caught the Eli bug.
- rockefeller2, on 04/12/2008, -0/+16"but it was wrong anyone I look at it."
- dpcamp, on 04/11/2008, -1/+46dude i was trying to get through his part without laughing and then they did the heard cutout around his face and i couldn't hold it in anymore.. i'm pretty sure i'm going to hell now..
- gn0stik, on 04/11/2008, -2/+76I felt bad for the second kid. Then I felt good about the other guys letting him compete and treating him well, and even complimenting him at the end.
The first guy calling him a cripple kinda sucked but hey, it was a battle. You kinda have to have thick skin, I guess, and it didn't seem to bother him.- jc7012, on 04/11/2008, -0/+45He probably didn't know where he was...
- WallnutBoy, on 04/11/2008, -0/+17Oh god now I am definitely off to hell..
- d0onut, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6At first I thought the cripple thing was just a really ***** diss, but then I saw the other guy...
- jc7012, on 04/11/2008, -0/+45He probably didn't know where he was...
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -3/+28My favorite part was how the words disappeared into the host's shirt.
- rjc5056, on 04/12/2008, -0/+8Second time through, I noticed this little gem: Right as the first rapper finishes and they cut back to the judges, the one in the middle is effusively showing his amazement at the skill of performance he just witnessed. Then, he notices the camera is on them again and tries to play it off with a quick arm cross and scowl, because real thugs don't "enjoy things."
- Starch, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1hah yea! Every time I watch this video I find something new to enjoy!

- BrendanSheehan, on 04/11/2008, -3/+68"I would laugh, but a part of me honestly thinks that the second guy is actually retarded."
That part is called your brain.- unr1, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1hahaha,
- merdiesel, on 04/11/2008, -0/+9The second guy is definitely slow... still awesome nonetheless.
- popfrogs, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12He still won the battle hands down. The part where he tells the super dark guy to "stay in the shade" is hilarious, that was some real battle rapping.
- danomagnum, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1From the moment you knew it was a rap battle, you should have known that.
- InfernoBob, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2He's not actually retarded?
- BTConan, on 04/12/2008, -1/+3Either that or a stroke.
- falafelkiosken, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5he looks kinda blind or something
- gn0stik, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah the way his eyes were moving seemed kinda like he was just unaware of them like a blind person might be. However, I don't think that was his only problem.
- TracerMan, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3His rhyme was clever hands down.
- gn0stik, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah the way his eyes were moving seemed kinda like he was just unaware of them like a blind person might be. However, I don't think that was his only problem.
- daschupa, on 04/11/2008, -0/+8Are you sure this wasn't from a special ed school? They all look like they're stuck in second.
- MilitarySon, on 04/12/2008, -0/+0haha, indeed...
- davidjsmitty, on 04/11/2008, -8/+3You're retarded.
- soomprimal, on 04/12/2008, -1/+19Who cares if he's retarded. He was still better most people at freestyling. He had a rough start but picked it up.
- digjam, on 04/12/2008, -2/+13Its sick to see ppl actually makin fun of the second guy here...
- Eezyville, on 04/12/2008, -4/+8LOL WOW!!! omfg I'm ashamed of my race.
- Verz, on 04/12/2008, -3/+4Cut the first three words out of that and you'd be solid.
- chucali, on 04/12/2008, -15/+1***** you *****
- MonkCanatella, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2You should be a rapper.
- Verz, on 04/12/2008, -3/+4Cut the first three words out of that and you'd be solid.
- Rosh37, on 04/12/2008, -2/+3crack kills.
- TheBigBad, on 04/12/2008, -0/+6Shine on Eli, you crazy-eyed diamond. The funniest part is the fact that host Marv-O can't keep his hands off of that judge in the middle.
- w00kiekrisp, on 04/11/2008, -23/+149THAT'S why it's funny!
- BiGBiLLZ, on 04/11/2008, -46/+445Wow.. the first black guy seems typcal in nature but the 2nd black guy was definetly proof of a crack baby. And did anyone notice that the host coudn't stop himself from rubbing the black judge in the middle
- rezist, on 04/11/2008, -19/+5hai, you remind me of david duke
- popfrogs, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5What was the giveaway, the pointy hat or the flaming cross behind his computer? ;p
- BetterOffEd, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1You KNOW David Duke?!?
- rjc5056, on 04/11/2008, -8/+455Thanks for pointing out the race of the judge in the middle. Completely relevant in a video where every single person was black.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 04/12/2008, -29/+8Because identifying race is now considered racist...
Chill out.- StolenLamp, on 04/12/2008, -2/+29No, it was just a superfluous detail.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 04/12/2008, -11/+8They were all male there but he specifically called him a guy.
I guess that's superfluous too.
Everyone could see what the judge was doing... I guess that's a superfluous detail too.
You are arguing over a matter of opinion. Not fact. - rjc5056, on 04/12/2008, -8/+1Do you know what the word "superfluous" even means? Because I don't think it means what you think it means.
- J3EBS, on 04/12/2008, -3/+4I mean, I don't think I mean it to mean what you think it means.
- TheSlinky, on 04/12/2008, -1/+3You idiot he didn't specifically call him a guy. He could've said 'person' but that just takes up as many words. Saying 'guy' isn't superfluous as it's used in place of the word 'person'. Damn some people are stupid.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 04/12/2008, -11/+8They were all male there but he specifically called him a guy.
- skyroket, on 04/12/2008, -1/+4I don't see where he's accusing the OP of being a racist. Maybe you're racist, thinking his comment about how funny it was he pointed out the race when they're all the same race, was racist.
- dorkino, on 04/12/2008, -0/+8All of you shut up, ffs
- StolenLamp, on 04/12/2008, -2/+29No, it was just a superfluous detail.
- matters5, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1That was the funniest comment I've ever read.
- BetterOffEd, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1Agreed. I'm still laughing as I type this. rjc5056 wins the internets for today.
.
- BetterOffEd, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1Agreed. I'm still laughing as I type this. rjc5056 wins the internets for today.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 04/12/2008, -29/+8Because identifying race is now considered racist...
- superfuxxorr, on 04/11/2008, -6/+136Was the judge in the middle blacker than the other two judges?
- dopplerdog, on 04/12/2008, -1/+18It's like, how much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black.
- dorkino, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Yes
- ADIDAS247, on 04/11/2008, -4/+2The first guy had his head down and when the 2nd guy starts you can see him give the WTF?! look
- Enthwar, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I was thinkin he did that because they weren't supposed to use the N word or other expletives, but the "not all there" guy did, and thats when the other dude looks up, like "Oh my god did he just say that?"
- ogmak, on 04/11/2008, -2/+22He might be on crack. His eyes kept on locking up at the ceiling. Super high...
- cheese06, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3I think he was born cracked out due to maternal failure.
- lewhich, on 04/11/2008, -42/+4Wasn't every body three black? You just had to point out since it was the most relevant issue.
You just joined digg like what ... 3 days ago and this is what you have to say ... some fagots will never change. ... too bad for you, like it or not things will change (and are changing)- BiGBiLLZ, on 04/11/2008, -7/+8Calm Down Mr. Sharpton. I know it's obvious hes black. And i know he wasent any blacker then "action jackson" or the "godfather" and that other judge in the middle. Next time ill just say "the black guy standing up". Happy?
I Rest my Case- BetterOffEd, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1I hope you're joking... Do you really STILL not get it? You don't need to say "black" when... oh nevermind.
- digitalunit, on 04/11/2008, -3/+14Over-reaction detected.
- DephexTwin, on 04/11/2008, -1/+40I like how you start making a point about bigotry and then call the guy a ***** out of nowhere.
- lewhich, on 04/11/2008, -25/+1fagot doesn't always mean gay and you know that ... most of the times it means "*****" and you know that
- 10lbhammer, on 04/11/2008, -0/+19***** most definitely means gay. always.
unless you're talking about a bundle of sticks. - wellyuk, on 04/11/2008, -1/+10@10lbhammer:

- wellyuk, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7except that's fag, not *****.
- rjc5056, on 04/11/2008, -0/+8@fancyj
No, that's "fag." Nobody's walking around London saying "I can't wait til break so I can suck down a *****." Well, most people aren't, at least. - DephexTwin, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2"You're kissing a girl? That's so gay!"
- 10lbhammer, on 04/11/2008, -0/+19***** most definitely means gay. always.
- fancyj, on 04/11/2008, -0/+14that is the dumbest ***** argument i have ever heard. @lewhich
- lewhich, on 04/11/2008, -25/+1fagot doesn't always mean gay and you know that ... most of the times it means "*****" and you know that
- madmonkey300, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1What is it with black African American people and "change"?
- BetterOffEd, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1I know... I mean white African American people aren't obsessed with change. What gives?
- BiGBiLLZ, on 04/11/2008, -7/+8Calm Down Mr. Sharpton. I know it's obvious hes black. And i know he wasent any blacker then "action jackson" or the "godfather" and that other judge in the middle. Next time ill just say "the black guy standing up". Happy?
- HumbleDialog, on 04/11/2008, -4/+118Black judge in the middle is black.
- tehrob, on 04/11/2008, -1/+17He rubbed him in the middle of what?
- gthyb, on 04/11/2008, -3/+41They were all black, you idiot.
- brad3378, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3I think you should double check anyway.

- glasnostic, on 04/11/2008, -3/+810 bucks says BIGBILL has used Obama's "typical white person" comment as evidence that Obama hates white people.
- acroyear2, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3ah man, if the crack part probably weren't painfully true, i'd enjoy laughing... but its likely true... sigh. poor kid.

- jongos, on 04/11/2008, -11/+274Slinky, the problem isn't the teachers. Slang, ebonics, slurred speech, (whatever you want to call it) are embraced by black culture as 'authentic' or acceptable from parents who talk like that, by their peers, even the musician and athlete heroes some might have. This leads to the a perceived positive reinforcement of what is acutally non-progressive behavior in many cases. Some some kids, despite all the efforts of the school system, maintain what they identify with as part of their cultural identity. Which is fine, until you get out into the rest of society and people think you're an idiot for not speaking english correctly despite having grown up in an English speaking country.

by dephextwin - jrobh, on 04/11/2008, -3/+18I really think there's not a problem with people using dialects other than Standard American English but I also think it's important that people can speak Standard American English when it's appropriate. Hip hop battles are not what I would consider a situation where it would be necessarily appropriate at all. Regarding your comment about people who speak English as a second language being able to "speak it way better than the majority of blacks in America," you are plainly stereotyping people and I doubt it's based on anything legitimate.

- SpeedSteamBoat, on 04/11/2008, -11/+40I'm going to go ahead and give a nod to the subtle racist undertone here. I know jongos probably didn't intend it, but it's not fair to cite this as strictly "black culture." Black culture is a complicated and diverse thing just like "white culture" and "latino culture" or whatever you want to say. The truth is these phrases are meaningless since culture is primarily a localized societal byproduct. I feel it would be more accurate to call this "inner city culture", but even that probably isn't exactly accurate ("Hip-Hop culture" maybe?). The point is that there are black, white, Hispanic, and Asian young men who act and talk this way, and what they have in common is a certain atmosphere and/or social exposure growing up. Anyone can learn behavior from one another regardless of skin color. I understand jongos misinterpretation here though, because the auto-segregation that Americans have imposed on themselves for decades can often give the illusion that race is something other than just skin color.
tl;dr - It's a cultural divide, and culture is, in fact, color blind so it's silliness to pull race into the issue beyond claiming a certain majority in the group. Of course, giving a label like "black culture" to it is just outright. - sherifftruman, on 04/11/2008, -6/+17The people in this video aside, African American Vernacular English is just a dialect, and it means nothing about the intelligence of people who speak that way. Dialects exist all over the world in all kinds of different languages. They're not wrong just because your race/ethnicity/region/whatever uses a different dialect. "Ebonics" has consistent rules, they just happen to differ from standard English.
- randyzaia, on 04/11/2008, -8/+13"it means nothing about the intelligence of people who speak that way"
I beg to differ. If people who spoke this way were intelligent, they would know that speaking that way guarantees that you'll never get a decent job in your life. Aside from that, it's not just the dialect - it's the accompanying amoral, coarse, sociopathic attitude that seems to go along with it that turns people off.- MelroseMan, on 04/11/2008, -2/+6heh, My father is a doctor and was raised up with the most country(est?) family I've ever met. Now, he still says a lot of slurred and country things but he knows a lot of big words too. When he wants to be professional he is conscious of what he says but when he's relaxed he isn't as proper. Slang varies among people.
- lordtyros, on 04/11/2008, -7/+6There's nothing wrong with ebonics in an appropriate setting. As long as you're not at a job interview or in the workplace, it shouldn't matter how you and your friends speak.
Your bigotry is showing.- randyzaia, on 04/12/2008, -3/+7If there's nothing wrong with "ebonics" then what would be wrong about using it in a job interview or in the workplace?
In my personal experience, people who speak like this, white, black or whatever color they might be, are not the brightest people you'll encounter. - lordtyros, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2Is it wrong not to wear a tie to a job interview? No, but you do because the people you're trying to impress think you should. Popular convention != morality.
- randyzaia, on 04/12/2008, -3/+7If there's nothing wrong with "ebonics" then what would be wrong about using it in a job interview or in the workplace?
- d0onut, on 04/12/2008, -2/+4@lord: What's the point of even speaking it if you can speak normally? I understand if someone has an accent, but they're talking like retards to sound cool.
- jrobh, on 04/12/2008, -1/+4do you speak the same around your friends as you do when you are in a professional setting? If you do then I'd say you are in the minority on that one. There's also a difference between people who speak that way because it's a cultural dialect (and note that there is certainly a difference between an accent and a dialect), which I think is legit, and people who only speak that way to sound cool because they idolize the culture. One thing to remember also is that the kids in this video are in high school, so they are probably speaking the way they do for both of the above reasons because at that age everyone really is trying to be cool. You probably spoke improperly to sound cool at that age too sometimes, even if it wasn't anything like how they are talking.
- DannyBoy7783, on 04/11/2008, -2/+7AAVE was acceptable 200 years ago when people were much more isolated and never left their region. That's not really the case anymore. And any self respecting parent would slap the black off their kid if they talked like that because they should know it will hurt their child's chances at doing well in the future.
- Tomchei, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3The problem is that there is an implied 'psychic' connection that I am supposed to understand that doesn't exist an any other dialect on the planet, 'Know what I'm saying?'
- randyzaia, on 04/11/2008, -8/+13"it means nothing about the intelligence of people who speak that way"
- cwright213, on 04/11/2008, -4/+8Well I don't care what anyone says. That clip is just sad. The Education system has failed those kids. When i was in high school many years ago we had a very diverse student body and no one spoke like that.the hip hop culture has let down todays children too because they fuel this garbage. Lupe Fiasco (rap artist) has a song about how the industry wants rappers to dumb down the songs so others can understand them and sing along singing the same line over and over and over and call it a hit.
- Grym11, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3In what hypothetical world would "Eli" ever be an all-star academic? The kid is borderline retarded. Or are you trying to suggest that there aren't retarded white people?
You people need to relax. This isn't some kind of social commentary. And it most certainly isn't a fair example of black students (even though they are undoubtedly worse off). It's a funny video--nothing more.
- Grym11, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3In what hypothetical world would "Eli" ever be an all-star academic? The kid is borderline retarded. Or are you trying to suggest that there aren't retarded white people?
- dmiles3480, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2Okay this is bad, but anyway the use of slang in and of itself is not bad. What is disturbing however is inarticulance. There are a lot of poets and rappers who use slang and well... speak from the heavens, but their numbers are decreasing. Making new words to express things or playing with language itself can be a good thing. Tolkien invented a bunch of languages in his youth and is applauded for it. At the same time young people need to be able to communicate. That is what rap is or WAS (another topic) about using your words to express yourself. In flowing with the beat several lyrical tools are utilized such as rhyme meter and metaphor. A lot of slang comes into being to fit the rhyme, and that's okay as long as you know what your doing.
- randomerratum, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Yo, you speek the troof dawg.
- ISmokesDaPot420, on 04/12/2008, -1/+3What if someone said the same think about leetspeak? If n00b suddenly faced the same criticism? The problem isn't slang or ebonics. Hating the slang is just an excuse for hating what is a culture. And hate will not address problems that this culture has been used to spread.
- elamr, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1well, that wasn't the typical digg commentary on race. Its usually something like "naggers huh huh - [+60 diggs]" or "sparkly wiggles - [+40 diggs]"
Great perspective, jongos. kinda cool when someone actually understands. - NCfan991, on 04/17/2008, -0/+0Here's the thing I don't get. I grew up speaking English, French, and Russian. I can now speak English and French fluently, and I understand Russian and can speak it reasonably well. Most of my friends are also children of French people living in the US, and they all speak both languages fluently.
I don't buy the argument that because these kids hear this "dialect" at home and that this "dialect" is glorified by rappers, it is somehow harder for them to learn proper English. I am more partial to the idea that the education system has failed. I have to say I've never been to a public school in my life. I have plenty of classmates who don't speak English at home at all (ie children of Chinese immigrants), but they all are fluent in English. Why? Good schools.
