Mayer Amschel Rothschild 1828
After the turn of the nineteenth century and the invasion of Germany by Napoleon’s army, William left his money to Rothschild and fled to Denmark. Rothschild then assumed the role of William’s banker and executed two fabled moves that ensconced the family as Europe’s preeminent banking house:
The first scam involved the Battle of Waterloo.
With Wellington about to engage Napoleon, Rothschild, on information from his agents, knew that Napoleon was about to be defeated, but spread word throughout London that Napoleon appeared to be on his way to victory.
Rothschild then sold his holdings in the English stock market, starting a panic. After the market crashed, Rothschild agents began buying up the devalued stocks and when official word finally reached England that Napoleon had indeed been beaten by Wellington, stocks soared, giving Rothschild control over the British economy. - Syntaxis, on 10/04/2008, -2/+19Save a tree, eat a beaver.

- Taiyoryu, on 10/04/2008, -2/+15All you people complaining about a $700 billion bailout, where were you when the Iraq war was declared, when each new funding measure was passed, when Bush kept adding programs under the guise of national security that not only cost money but eroded your rights? Heck the $700 billion bailout isn't even going to be available immediately. Only a third of it is being activated. But somehow this magic number makes people angry. The fact that since Bush took office the national debt has nearly doubled somehow doesn't phase you. That $700 billion is just the latest on top of $4 TRILLION already spent.
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/09/29/couricandc ...
Yeah, this $700 billion bailout will probably have an inflationary effect, but if you think it's the sole and primary source of future inflation, you're sadly mistaken. What's an extra 7% on the total national debt? Cut taxes and increase spending. That makes for a real good recipe.
People are angry and rightly so. Their trust has been broken with Wall Street and Capital Hill. The recession is coming no matter what. The writing on the wall was there months ago. Credit is all but frozen and unfortunately businesses operate on credit which for some includes payroll, without this bailout businesses will fail and people may not get paid. Will it be a Depression-like crash whether or not the bailout passed? No. But it's a damned-if-you-do, or a damned-if-you-don't situation. I would have preferred nothing be done, but since the bailout did pass, I'm just glad that there are taxpayer protections and the ability to renegotiate mortgages. Of course people think that it would be better to give the money to the people. Doing so doesn't get people out of their upside down mortgages and it still adds to the national debt. Perhaps being able to renegotiate mortgage terms isn't the meatiest bone they toss to the people but at least it is a bone.
Ultimately, I think it's a sense of injustice that's the biggest issue, that no one's going to jail, that no one person or one group takes the fall. Yet who can you blame when most everyone---lenders, politicians, and consumers---all played a part? - clinko, on 10/04/2008, -1/+13Politics aside:
I'm really amazed at the quality of this photoshop.
I wouldn't doubt that photoshop would be the modern political cartoon if done properly. Daniel Kongos or similar artists should ditch iPoopDaily.com and get a career syndicating similar works within newspapers. - ScottMitchell, on 10/04/2008, -0/+8I blame the Democrats for not having the testicular fortitude to stand up to the Bush Administration and reject this bailout bill. Moreover, I commend the Republicans that had a spine and stood up for what's right by voting No.
In San Diego county, for example, all Republican Congressmen voted NO and the one Democratic Congresswoman (Susan Davis) voted Yes. - Harbinger67, on 10/04/2008, -0/+7There are no crimes if you're a high up in the Federal government.

- raychampagne, on 10/04/2008, -1/+6The money is coming from a concrete place - in the form of Treasury Notes bought by other countries - notably China. It adds to the debt we are racking up at an insane pace, but the money is real and coming from somewhere. I'm wondering when China comes knocking on th door looking for the money, what are we going to do then?
