- Arramol, on 04/05/2008, -2/+2Although I can't say it'd surprise me if that was it. It'd be just like the Hitchhiker's trilogy and its five books to have an answer that didn't fit the question, especially considering that if they have a literary point to make, it's the absurdity of the universe.
- BelXul, on 04/05/2008, -4/+126 x 9 does actually equal 42, but not in the base 10 numerical system that we all use every day, in which it comes out to 54. Instead, use a base 13 numerical system when you try to multiply it. It would look something like this: ...10, 11, 12, 13, 1-1,1-2,1-3, 1-4... 1-9, 1-10, 1-11, 1-12, 1-13, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3... By the time you have it all figured out, your answer would be 4-2, or forty-two.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Gu ...- BigKoi, on 04/05/2008, -3/+1I have always wondered if HitchHiker's guide was inspired by 42 from Buckminster Fuller's 42 hour long lectures regarding every thing he knew....
http://www.realitysandwich.com/node/208- iamafatguy, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1Douglas Adams stated:
The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an
ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations,
base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk,
stared into the garden and thought '42 will do' I typed it out. End of story.
Best,
Douglas Adams

- fultron89, on 04/05/2008, -0/+0ummm... no Bush jr. is the 43rd President.
but this isn interesting: Bush Sr = 41st pres., Bush Jr. = 43rd pres.

- grimward, on 04/05/2008, -1/+3Actually Cbeach, it's about as plausible as any other theories that are out there. I think what Douglas Adams was trying to say was "we may think we know, but we really don't"

- Voxxov, on 04/05/2008, -1/+3And this is relevant how?
- CrudeDarkness, on 04/05/2008, -1/+1it's just a random verse which I picked trying to find the meaning of life. here is for example another verse 24:42 : "And to Allâh belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, and to Allâh is the return (of all)."
- lickmylovepump, on 04/05/2008, -1/+1so the biblical comparison would probably be the 42nd book, followed by the sixth chapter and the ninth verse, or Luke 6:9 --- "Then Jesus said to them, 'I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?'"
See? That doesn't have much to do with the question either.
