- rypic7, on 07/21/2008, -8/+226wow. all this time i have been looking these breathtaking images of it from the front with rolling deserts and pyramids behind it. Now I know it is a football field away from a dumpy city. Bummer.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -2/+78Ya, from the tourist photos you assume the pyramids and the sphinx are out in the middle of the desert... kinda disappointing.
- maxyRO, on 07/21/2008, -7/+70nice ass

- jsauter, on 07/21/2008, -0/+52That is what I thought as well. I suppose Duck Tales episodes from my youth were probably not the best source for Egyptian geography.
- RealmDown, on 07/21/2008, -4/+48The sexual desires of a camel
Are stronger the most people think.
One night in a seizure of passion,
One tried to make love to a sphinx.
Now the sphinx is made out of sandstone,
And has rocks that stick out to the Nile.
Which accounts for the hump of the camel,
And the Sphinx' inscrutable smile. - rittz, on 07/21/2008, -5/+43That's what she said.
- kotn2012, on 07/21/2008, -1/+36Huh, I always pictured it being bigger.
- ArkRaider1936, on 07/21/2008, -0/+32I was fortunate enough to get to go to Giza last year, and I can tell you that it is nothing like what you expect! The number of people there really detract form the majesty of the place -- especially those damn in-your-face, grabby vendors who can't understand the concept of personal space. My first minute in Giza went something like this:
Annoying Vendor #1: My friend, you want free camel ride?
Me: Free?
Annoying Vendor #1: Yes, my friend! Free!
Me: Yeah? Well, how much to get off after the ride?
Annoying Vendor #1: We will negotiate later.
Me: [turns around, walks off, is approached by Annoying Vendor #2]
Annoying Vendor #2: [pushes a t-shirt into ArkRaider's arms] My friend, gift from Egypt!
Me: Cool, shokran (thank you). [walks off and is stopped by Annoying Vendor #2]
Annoying Vendor #2: No no no, you buy.
Me: Umm, no, no buy. You said it was a gift; gifts are free.
Annoying Vendor #2: Well then, is not gift! You buy!
Me: [throws shirt back to Annoying Vendor #2] La shokran (no thanks), pal.
Annoying Vendor #2: But is lucky!
Me: Don't need it; I make my own luck!
There were plenty of other schmos for them to trick out of money, so after a while I just started having fun with them as they approached me. I started talking to them in Latin (sly devils knew every other language I tried) and eventually I started joking around by doing the Jedi mind trick, waving my hand and telling them, "You do not want to sell me [whatever it is they were selling]." That worked surprisingly well because they had no response for it. - Chairboy, on 07/21/2008, -2/+31I like big Sphinx's and I cannot lie, those other egyptians might deny That when a 5,000 year old statue gets in your face you get-
Hey, waitaminute....
BTW, it's really beaten up. The restoration work the greeks did a couple thousand years ago is really noticeable. Until a hundred years or so ago, there was sand up to its neck, and many egyptologists would like consideration given to re-burying it so the head doesn't break off.
Here's a picture I took of the head a couple months ago: http://picasaweb.google.com/walkasone/BenHallert/p ... - areohbe, on 07/21/2008, -1/+21Never seen it from that angle...from the front it looks like its miles away from civilization... this takes the mystery out... :(
- xekko, on 07/21/2008, -1/+20Nope, the Sphinx and the pyramids are right on the edge of Cairo: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=s ...
It's just that every photo you see always points out the other way into the desert, never looking the other way :) - ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -2/+20From behind it does look rather plain.
- kirkness, on 07/21/2008, -0/+18this reminds me of when I went to the Alamo and how if any of the postcard shots panned 10 feet in any direction, or turned around and took a pic, you'd see a shopping mall, and tons of tourist trap shops.
- sexybobo, on 07/21/2008, -0/+15That movie didn't need any help.
- HayString, on 07/21/2008, -0/+13Check out the satellite view: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=29.975278,31.137778 ...

- screamingjoker, on 07/21/2008, -1/+11Wait you mean to tell me that Textbooks, Shows and Movies have only been giving us an idealized version of everything, and not the whole picture of how things actually are ?! (shakes head in disbelief)

- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -3/+12wow...a bunch of 10 y/o on dig
- Parasiteartist, on 07/21/2008, -0/+9Multiple pictures of the Sphinx and around it. http://pharaohsadventure.com/
I always wanted to visit it, and camel-trek across the desert there. But now it looks like I can walk to it while my lunch is being made. Still beautiful though. - MavRevMatt, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8I take it you're not getting much done at work eh'?
- Chairboy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8Yep, that's me. A pair of guys walked in at a restaurant where I was lunching and sat nearby and kept looking over at me. After a few minutes, they walked up and asked if I was Kevin Smith. I denied it, smiling because I've heard it before, but they thought this meant I was being coy and didn't appear to believe me. "That's totally what you'd say if you WERE and were trying to keep it on the down-low" one of them said.
When I left later on, they wished me luck on "my" next film. What they thought KS would be doing in Eugene,OR, I'm not sure... - dannyapplesauce, on 07/21/2008, -6/+14http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=29.975278,31.1375&s ...

- wondertwins, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6Dr.Seuss?
- smashingmonkey, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6As a New Yorker and one who has spend a month in Egypt, I can assure you that Cairo is not a dumpy city. It is a fantastic place with dumpy parts, much like NYC.
But of course bmorris is getting burried by a bunch of ignorant diggtards. Times like this Digg is a dumpy website. - project46, on 07/21/2008, -9/+14this isnt fake is it? i always pictured the sphinx out in the open sahara
- Jadu, on 07/21/2008, -8/+13WTF
- Negligence, on 07/21/2008, -5/+10A sphincter says what?
- Chairboy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5My favorite 'Indiana Jones' moment was near the end of the trip when I snuck into the Giza plateau w/ a couple of girls and climbed to the top of the Great Pyramid. We were hiding from the AK-47 carrying guards and had a few narrow escapes (including a ten minute huddle in the funerary temple at the base of the second pyramid while a guard car hung out nearby) but made it. The only pictures that came out is this one of the wooden structure at the top, I had to use a 15 second exposure:
http://picasaweb.google.com/walkasone/BenHallert/p ...
Plus the next two of the girls laying up there. All of these are 'dark room, bright monitor' pics, heh. - Chairboy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Canon SD 850 (the EXIF data is available on PicasaWeb on the right hand side under 'More info') plus wobbly photographer. I would have loved to have a tripod, but the 'gull wing' shape of the ISS reflects my movement while trying to painstakingly take the shot. It was just a moving point of light.
- cslawren, on 07/21/2008, -2/+7Isn't it near Giza?
- ringo380, on 07/21/2008, -1/+6I believe you mean San Antonio, TX. Same point still applies though.
- faatbuddha, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4I also lived in Cairo for a month, it's a fantastic place. Of course it's got its dumpy parts, but don't all cities?
- yikiad, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4i like the picture of the iss. what did you take that with?
- Hodor, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5how much do you think the condo's across from the sphinx cost??
- T-Maaz, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Nice shot, and excellent detail. kudos to you - BTW, are you the one that bears a striking resemblance to Kevin Smith?
- vintershaype, on 07/21/2008, -3/+7ford trucks, baseball, and kenny chesney. who the hell wouldn't be jealous?
- flamyngo, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4dugg for your awesome khaki outfit. sup indiana.
- dannyapplesauce, on 07/21/2008, -2/+6when the hell did this "in before" ***** get popular on digg? Why the hell is it popular anywhere for that matter?
- db0255, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4"I make my own luck!"
Alright there, Harvey Dent... - SilenceIsFoo, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3True. I remember the Alamo.
