- sickswaystop, on 07/15/2009, -57/+215Not all cops are jerks.
- novenator, on 07/15/2009, -9/+148I was shocked during my first trip to Europe that law enforcement officers were not arrogant and mean. I thought cops were like that world wide, but in more mature Western democracies, they are actually quite helpful, friendly folks.
*note not every experience with a cop who I didn't know has been unpleasant, but honestly the vast majority have been very much so. - artfulmoments, on 07/15/2009, -9/+75I suppose this "Surviving the World" thing is his vehicle to getting a TV gig.
It's NOT WORKING.
Maybe the 'emotionless grad student guy' should show more character.
He should be more "smirkier"... to match the tone of his faux philosophizing. - stupidape, on 07/15/2009, -2/+58http://wimp.com/coolestcop/
- lemur, on 07/15/2009, -3/+49Actually they're like that in undemocratic states as well. You'll probably get friendlier service from a Chinese police officer than you would from an American one. The problem is cultural values, not political system.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -4/+49This guy really needs to realize that including his creepy face makes all of these messages worse.

- littlebylittle, on 07/15/2009, -2/+36My Dad gave me some very good advice when I was a kid:
"The police are a necessary evil. Just stay off their radar screen." - cawfee, on 07/15/2009, -34/+66But most jerks are cops.
- JinxCrow, on 07/15/2009, -1/+29Now they know what you look like.
- CanadaMan87, on 07/15/2009, -4/+32So you're saying that you jerk cop dicks? That's one way of getting out of a ticket.
- 4degrees, on 07/15/2009, -10/+34maybe not all jerks. but they are all power addicts. Most will do just about anything to wield some kind of power, be it giving ***** tickets, harassing little kids, to kicking the ***** out of someone.
our streets are policed by addicts. - ygeoff419, on 07/15/2009, -2/+26If only spelling was a crime.......
- SweetDaddyD, on 07/15/2009, -5/+27If you really want to help people, serve and protect the public, etc - become a fireman.
If you want to hide in the bushes and give people a ticket for going 6 over- become a cop. - G8kpr, on 07/15/2009, -2/+23I remember listening to the Radio, and they were discussing U.S. cops vs Canadian Cops. (there are plenty of Cdn Jerk cops too, York Region cops are about the biggest dick heads out there).
At any rate, this one guy said he drove into the states, was going down one of the interstate (I-95 i think, not sure) and he pulled over because his car was over heating or something like that. So he stops, turns off the car, and is getting a flashlight from his glove compartment or something, and this cop comes up behind him, orders him out of the car with his hands up, and the cop draws his gun. The guy said he was freaking out. Whenver he tried to tell the cop what was going on, the cop just told him to shut it.
I'm sure this isn't the norm... but just a weird situation. My uncle had a really nice experience with a cop in (I think) Detroit. He was lost, and pulled over to look at a map, a few minutes later a cop pulled up and said "you're not from around here are you?" and he said "no, i'm lost"
the cop said "you should never ever stop in this neighbourhood" and the cop told him to follow him out. They passed a few intersections that were flashing yellow. He later learned that this was so that cars wouldn't stop at the intersections for long, or else they'd be attacked.
scary places man. - KingGorilla, on 07/15/2009, -0/+20I've met some decent cops in the US. Nonetheless I'm still iffy about them due to the things they can get away with it. But anyways this cop is a good one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9yIBOnbJjY - heresy_fnord, on 07/15/2009, -0/+19About your uncle,
Was it at night? I'd tend to think that late at night, our traffic lights flash at low traffic intersection because there aren't enough cars coming through to keep them on. One side flashes red, meaning you have to stop like you're at a stop sign. The other flashes yellow, meaning you have the right of way.
I'd like to think they were trying to prevent crime but it seems more likely its due to low traffic. - BenTheTank, on 07/15/2009, -3/+22Hey, that's the guy from that other thing.
- flyingsquirle, on 07/15/2009, -0/+18Wow...
- consonance, on 07/15/2009, -2/+20Some are just dicks. And we all know how well jerks work with dicks.
- hankthedwarf, on 07/15/2009, -11/+29Dumb. I get the sentiment, and I hate bully cops, but he gives the exact reasons WHY some of them are jerks and then asks them not to be. Not a convincing argument or thought-provoking in the least.
- Kitakaze, on 07/15/2009, -3/+20There are countless jobs other than of a cop, that are far more dangerous, stressful and boring — yet rewards far less in terms of salary, gratitude, pensions, health insurance and other benefits.
If the average pizza delivery or taxi ride was accompanied with half as bad an attitude as that of the average cop encounter, I think we'd hear a few voices about that, too... - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -6/+22Woooo cop-bashing on Digg! Who would've thought?
- rchargel, on 07/15/2009, -0/+16I'm from Brazil and I can say with absolute certainty that I would rather deal with an American cop (even the most douchey of them) than a Brazilian cop. I've met some halfway-decent cops in the USA. In Brazil when you walk by a cop you keep your eyes on the floor. The police there are as dangerous as any of the gangs and drug lords (hell most of them work for the gangs). I remember I took my wife there once and she wanted to film a cop who had pulled someone over, she thought it was cool that they all carried AK-47s. I had to explain to her that he would probably kill both of us if he even saw her camera, as he was probably going to ask that person for a bribe and wouldn't want to be caught on camera doing so. That's not to say that all Brazilian cops are bad, but the good ones are few and far in between. Not to mention, if you're an honest cop, the bad ones will most likely kill you to protect themselves. Basically picture that show "The Shield," only a hundred times worse. Another example, I went back home for a funeral in 2003. At the time there was a big news story going on that a group of cops had been hired by some local drug dealers to round up the street kids and kill them (street kids steal money from the drug dealer's customers). This particular pair of police officers had killed 36 homeless children and were only caught because media got involved. Most of the time this guys do what they do with total impunity.
- lemur, on 07/15/2009, -0/+15I don't know probably the same reason why China has a lower rate of vandalism than USA. East Asians are not the most disorderly of peoples.
- warriorscot, on 07/15/2009, -0/+13A good deal of European policing standards is down to good recruitment policies. They hire the best either people with degrees or people smart enough to get them so you have people that are smart and conscientious and that once trained know their job and can exercise common sense in its application.
- mnemy, on 07/15/2009, -1/+14Who the ***** cares if they get attitude all day, and are only appreciated on the rare occasion they do something that deserves praise? MOST jobs are like that, except we don't get public appreciation when someone good happens. Your boss just says good job, get back to work. And we don't take out the bad times on the people we're supposed to serve (customers, colleagues, etc).
So yeah, arrogant bully cops can suck a dick. - JackNco, on 07/15/2009, -3/+16Just the on duty ones.

...sigh - rmg7789, on 07/15/2009, -2/+14Does that guy creep anyone else out?
- Ghjnut, on 07/15/2009, -2/+12I went out two days ago and after walking a friend home I ran into a bum with a 1500 trek bike with no seat (clearly lifted). He offered me the bike for 50 and I talked him down to 10. Having three bikes stolen from me, I got home to call the cops and tell them what happened in the hopes that someone would actually get a stolen bike back. Long story short, cops claimed I stole the bike and then got cold feet and called them out of fear of getting caught with the bike - I now have a court date coming up as I am the prime suspect in a bike theft case.
Cops blow - glowfood, on 07/15/2009, -0/+10Seconded...I seriously thought that was a joke.
- warcin, on 07/15/2009, -1/+10Did you do an illegal U-TURN... If so then how is he a jerk for doing his job. The last thing I would want is a cop that played favorites. If people just got it through there head that you break the law you pay the penalty thing would be a lot better.
- contact, on 07/15/2009, -0/+9Wow.. Was he really showing a protest crowd some respect?!?! He better be careful because he's probably going to get some mutual respect back.
This is a great example of an excellent cop. Now if we could only clone him. :) - sv650touring, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8"...yet rewards far less in terms of salary, gratitude, pensions, health insurance and being above the law."
that's better - lezguy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8*****' with me 'cause I'm a teenager, with a little bit of gold and a pager...
- sephiroth965, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8syntaxgs does it again.
- paintballer1833, on 07/15/2009, -2/+9I think a lot of the hatred of cops stems from the enforcement of non-violent crimes. They cannot be everywhere at once and cannot prevent crime all the time. They are human and I feel people understand that. In fact in many ways, cops are deemed necessary to protect our freedoms within our own country. Similar to how the Military protects our freedoms outside our country. We are disgusted when innocent people are killed or have their rights violated overseas by our own Military, and act similarly in our country when we see cops arresting "innocent" people. The difference is that we experience the latter in our everyday life. Those "innocent" people are our neighbors and friends.
No matter what stance you have on the laws involving non-violent crime, when one is arrested for committing them, there is a similar feeling among people. This feeling is the violation of your "natural rights"; everyone has a different opinion on what those are. When a person is arrested because they violate a "victimless crime", there is a large change in perspective. You realize that YOU are the victim and the COP is to blame.
The blame should really be on is the LAW which we all create through electing representatives who make the law in the first place. Although the cop may be the easiest to point your finger at, the real culprit is yourself and your fellow citizens. We create the laws through our political system that the cops enforce. In order to change these laws with integrity and success, you must engage in the current system, no matter how much you hate it, to initiate change.
Cops should be viewed in a similar light as the Veterans who have served our country. If "victimless" crimes were legalized, I believe police will get the respect they deserve and operate at peak efficiency. There is a reason we have the most advanced military in the world, and it's because we believe they protect our liberty that holds our country together. If the police force had this same goal, they would be seen in a better light. - tgc1, on 07/15/2009, -1/+8Pretty good guy I guess. But obviously there is reason to the guy eating the weed, bag and all. If the current drug enforcement policy in that country wasn't so ***** up, he wouldn't have done anything.
I mean honestly, it's a ***** plant. I appreciate the cop being fairly forthright with the guy, but that doesn't excuse the current state of things and the behavior of his fellow officers. - aschwartz, on 07/15/2009, -1/+8I just read thru a bunch of his lessons. 20 minutes I am not getting back..
- XkenX87, on 07/15/2009, -1/+7"confiscating"
- stripesonfire, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6when i was in germany a few months ago...we were having trouble figuring out how to get back to our hotel using the u-bahn...and we asked two police officers and they actually told us where to go and went with us.
- Sangreal2007, on 07/15/2009, -2/+8why would you buy the bike if you knew it was stolen?? that was completely your fault.
- Entroper, on 07/15/2009, -3/+9Indeed, 90% of my encounters with the police have been positive. I crashed my car when I was 16, at about 10:45 pm. It was dark out, I was driving on an unfamiliar road, and I didn't see the stop sign that was half-hidden by the trees (the intersection that I plowed through no longer exists, because there were too many crashes there -- it was moved 100 yards further down the road). The cop not only gave me a ticket for reckless driving, he gave me another for breaking curfew, which was 11 pm. Obviously I would not have been out if my car wasn't undriveable, and I had already called my parents to come get me. I was entirely polite, he just didn't want to hear any of it. He thought I was just some stupid kid driving too fast at night. The judge dismissed both charges at my hearing.
That was my one bad experience. Any time I've been on the road and needed help, the police have always been right there to assist me. I ran out of gas once and had 3 different police cars stop and ask if I needed help all in the span of 30 minutes. One offered to give me a ride to the nearest gas station, but I already had a friend on the way. When my engine died due to a faulty sensor, a cop was there within 5 minutes to help me push it off the road, before I even called them.
Cops usually aren't jerks until you give them a reason to be. - diulei, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5I've noticed that as well. I used to refer to cops in Japan (and the rest of East Asia) I suppose as walking maps. I would almost never talk to a cop here in the States unless I had to... and I have friends who are cops.
- XkenX87, on 07/15/2009, -1/+6MA's are the Navy equivelant to the Police.
This dude didn't have any money, and asked if he could have a buck. I gave him a 5. I told him you could just get me back sometime with like a favor or something. ( I meant suck my dick)
The next day I was going through the gate, My DOD (department of defence) sticker was falling off, and he scraped it and kicked me off base for a month. He could have just been like dude fix your *****. - noahhoward, on 07/15/2009, -1/+6If your job sucks, and you can't or won't do it properly because you don't like it, find another ***** job. Innocent people should not suffer because Officer McGee is sick of his beat.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7You're guilty of accepting stolen property, Ghjnut. Basically, you're a moron.
