- Xenon2434, on 07/01/2009, -4/+37Why do we need a census..really? That is a retarded question.
1. It is written in the Constitution.
2. If you "guesstimate" the population, it will become more and more inaccurate with time. In 10 years you would say, oh yeah, there are 300 million people, give or take 25 million or so. That is just not acceptable.
3. It doesnt waste any valuable resources. They hire people to go out and count people. Its not like any government job is interrupted because of this process.
My point being, it is a very useful, necessary process to ensure that we have an accurate count of the number of people in the country. People who believe it is useless are ***** tools who don't understand how the country works. - eir574, on 07/01/2009, -5/+35Do you people even understand what being a census partner means? From http://2010.census.gov/partners/partners/ :
"2010 Census Partners are government, non-profit, corporate or community organizations that have formally pledged their commitment to share the 2010 Census message and mobilize their constituents in support of the Census Bureau's goal of achieving a complete count."
As of a March 26 press release (http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/a ... ), there were at least 250 partners.
Here's a website describing what census partners actually do: http://2010.census.gov/2010census/more_information ... .
Being a census partner absolutely does not mean dealing with the execution of the census itself, but please . . . continue the hysteria and avoid educating yourself. It's amusing. - hawkspur, on 07/01/2009, -8/+27You're a partisan idiot with no understanding of how the Census and 'partners' actually operate. There are hundreds of partners that provide the manpower to go out and get an accurate people count; it's not some devious conspiracy theory to convert people to the Democratic party. I don't even see how they would be able to accomplish anything like that.

The needles that could pass through card holes would make contact with mercury wells and various categories would get a +1

If you put that in a movie people would think you were trying to be Steampunk. - MooseOfReason, on 07/01/2009, -3/+14Congress rarely follows what's written in the Constitution.
- MacEnvy, on 07/01/2009, -0/+10You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
- Swivelstick, on 07/01/2009, -3/+13How bout a dickwad census and you could be the poster child.
- realeskimopimp, on 07/01/2009, -1/+10of course. Why do I need to do research when foxnews does it all for me???
- hawkspur, on 07/01/2009, -3/+11That's because of the whole population growth thing.
- 9bpm9, on 07/01/2009, -1/+9They're not in your home jackass. And you pretty much tell them how many people are in your home when your file your god damn taxes every year.
- dagnome1984, on 07/01/2009, -3/+11Way to build a strawman. No one is arguing against the number of people in your house hold question. The main concern is the questions that are not explicitly authorized by the constitution. This of course has been addressed many times in the past. You are not legally required to fill out those questions. Nor should it ever be the government's business to know the various details of your life. History shows that Japanese Americans were rounded up based on the census data collected by the government. Now that is not to say the current president would do such a thing. If the country ever goes ape ***** again due to some circumstance. You might be better off not filling out that information.
- eir574, on 07/01/2009, -0/+8So, you don't believe the government when it says that ACORN will do none of the things you say it will (control personal information and get paid billions to do it), so you just make stuff up. How is that more reliable again?

- socivitus, on 06/30/2009, -3/+10DAMN YOU ACORN!!!
- Richandler, on 07/01/2009, -1/+8It's funny that in the land of the free you go to jail if you don't answer census questions. No matter how silly the reasoning behind resistance is considered it's still messed up. Jail was designed as punishment for those who hurt others in some way. Not taking the census doesn't hurt anyone since it's true meaning, tallies for representation are completely diminished.
- Richandler, on 07/01/2009, -8/+15The whole point of the Census was to determine how many representatives a state would get. Nothing else. Since we have moved past that there really is zero point to it. Hell we don't even get representation out of it anymore. I mean we went from 15,000 per representative to nearly 500,000.
- MacEnvy, on 07/01/2009, -3/+9@deema1
"ACORN is a criminal organization, and it's been proven over and over."
Show me the proof. Show it to me. Show me a real record of any criminal activity that ACORN has engaged in as an organization.
A few part time workers committing registration fraud so they can pick up an extra $20 has NOTHING to do with the organization. And there was never any voter fraud whatsoever - only some isolated registration fraud that was brought to light BY ACORN THEMSELVES because they were suspicious of the forms.
If you think that ACORN is a criminal organization, it's possible that you aren't partisan, but you're definitely an idiot who gets their information from other idiots. - Mike17102, on 07/01/2009, -2/+8And the Dems havnt figured out how to add a tax to it.
- eir574, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5@oldhick
Come on, don't believe the zealots. You're smarter than that. There are hundreds of organizations that partner with the census. They don't have any access to actual data. Their purpose is to get the message out, provide resources like space for training centers, etc. ACORN will not have access to actual data, unless you choose to disbelieve what the government says and instead make stuff up out of thin air. - indiancompanion, on 07/01/2009, -2/+7well, her plan may backfire, if MN does lose a seat, there is a good chance it could be her very own
- bones09, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5I agree. We should also do voting this way. We could use a 10% sample to cut the number of people who would have to have the day off to vote by 90%.
- MacEnvy, on 07/01/2009, -1/+6There no voter fraud allegations in any of those, and ALL THREE ARE HIT PIECES FROM BIASED SOURCES.
I'm serious - I can't find anything legitimate about any voter fraud. Show me a real source, and authoritative source, that has evidence of voter fraud.
All I'm looking for is evidence. There is NONE in the three links you posted. - inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5it tastes better than your mom's does.
- tnrich, on 07/01/2009, -1/+6During the last census, I had the "honor" of being singled out for the "long form" questionnaire. I declined the honor and only provide the number of people living in my home.
The census folks decided that wasn't good enough and sent a rep to knock on my door who insisted I was "required by law" to answer every question she wanted to ask me (and would face a penalty/fine if I continued to refuse) so that she could fill out the form as she stood at my door (she originally demanded, yes demanded, entrance into my home). When I asked her by what authority she demanded such things she had no answer. I told her I had provided the required information already and would answer no more questions. I politely asked her to leave. She refused and rang my door bell incessantly until I returned to the door and ordered her to leave my property. She still refused. She stood at my front door (full window) and shouted into my house that I was violating the law and would have to report me to the "authorities". She then began to shout out the questions and demanded that I come to the door and answer them. She eventually left, but only to go to my neighbors house to ask them to answer the questions about me and my family that I would not. I watched in amusement as my neighbors rolled over and attempted to answer the questions. I walked over and stood next to them and after a short uncomfortable silence the census taker gave up. As I discussed the issue with my neighbors their only excuse for trying to answer the questions about my family was "we have to, she was from the government".
The Constitution requires the enumeration of the people for the purpose of determining representation. Nothing more, nothing less. Anything else is unwarranted intrusion in our lives that the government does not have the right to ask for. I, for one, will never provide any additional information as a matter of principle. - Archer007, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Dugg for the remarkably trollish-sounding truth.
- jewishmafio, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4YEAH! TAKE IT TO THE JEWS ITS ALL THEIR FAULT!
- dagnome1984, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4While the three things you cited are not of relation to the topic at hand. Census data was used in the past to round up Japanese Americans during World War II. :(
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-03-30-cen ... - inigomntoya, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Ok, I will take a stab at this -
I THINK its because we don't want to know how many Jews there are in the US. We want to know how many total people there are in the US.
amiright? - deema1, on 07/01/2009, -2/+6Rarely is too generous.
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4@swivelstick & richandler - Do you *really* want a HoR with about 20 times the number of people in it as today? It's based on percentage of the population.
Personally, I support 100% the republican boycott on the census. They should absolutely NOT fill it out. They probably wouldn't notice that all of those red states drop down to 1 representative per state anyway. :) - MacEnvy, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4And yet you can't post a single concrete bit of evidence. Odd, isn't it, how there are "thousands of results" but you can't post one that has anything to do with voter fraud?
Don't worry about it - I think we can all see where your priorities lie. - oldhick, on 07/01/2009, -1/+4What kind of intrusive information? Also, because ACORN members have been charged with crimes, it doesn't make the organization criminal. They may be, but they haven't been convicted in a court of law. So you're accusations are lies. You can't factually support your claim and yet you repeatedly make the claim.
I have no love for ACORN and I too wish they weren't involved in the census and will fight their involvement legally and honestly. - AriaNoelle, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3The Computer History Museum in Mt. View, California, has one. It's pretty cool. They've also got one of Google's original servers, one of pretty much everything cool.
- TimtheTaxMan, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3I don’t have a problem with a simple count as called for in the Constitution, but when they start asking questions about race, income, and family structure is when it goes too far.
Here is a copy of the questions they ask.
http://2010.census.gov/2010census/recent_news/0118 ... - jasdf, on 07/01/2009, -1/+4Sounds like an early version of Digg.
- BoneheadFarker, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3Actually, the last time a census-taker came to my door, she did ask those questions. I had no problem with it.
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3Because the Nazis lost the election duh. It's the Jews and Blacks to the rescue!!!!
- anillop, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3If your country has around 300 million people you cant really have an accurate count unless you actually count every one possible at one specific time.
- wtrwlkr, on 07/01/2009, -3/+6I'm sure it will be "Fair and Balanced (TM)" as usual.
- oldhick, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2@eir574, I hope you're right. I hope ACORN volunteers won't be going door to door collecting the data.
- actionsketch, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2The census asks a lot of questions because when the politicians go to redraw district lines to reflect the population changes, they like to take all the other information into account too. Of course, they use this to commit gerrymandering... but what if we used it instead to algorithmically redraw district lines such that a state's population was better represented? If over half of Texas is hispanic, shouldn't over half of Texas's house representatives represent the hispanic population? People want to be represented, but inorder to be represented, you have to be willing to define your self.
- kingnova, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2While deema1 has an axe to grind that ruins his objectivity, I DO have some reservations about the census questions. It is a 40 minute questionnaire. It contains what I consider some awfully personal data to be giving to a complete stranger:
http://www.census.gov/acs/www/Downloads/SQuest09.p ...
This may not be the final version. If it is even close though, I doubt I would be willing to give out all the information requested. Go use the government records already in place. Don't ask me to give this information to a complete stranger. - rugabug, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Illegals are required to be counted too. They aren't here legally but they still have legal rights.
- rugabug, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2The other purpose for the Census is to know how much aid money to give areas during natural disasters and how much funding individual school should get.
- wtrwlkr, on 07/01/2009, -2/+4Do you notice how every time you post, you get buried?
- stevealford, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2I believe the point that he's making is that the questions on the census OTHER THAN "How many people are in your household?" such as the ones about your ethnicity could be used for bad reasons. What harm could it do to tell the government that I'm black or hispanic or Irish? Well, ask that question to anyone of Japanese descent who filled out the census questions before WWII and then get back to me.
If you are willing to answer the questions about family history, what will you do if they ask about political affiliations of known associates or if they ask your sexual orientation? Ever been on a trip to the Middle East? Why? These are things you shouldn't have to answer... just like the question: "What is your ethnic background?" The government has no need to know anything more about your household than how many people are in it so they can determine proportional representation. That is all. Although Barackalypse is a biased, partisan moron, he has a valid point about ethnicity NOT being the government's busines... unless he was just trolling and accidentally hinted to a good point. - PhobosDeimos, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2What won't those scheming community organizers think of next?! If I wanted the poor to have a voice in government, I'd stop yelling at them.
