I'm all for bringing the troops home, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Iraqi military is the last bunch thats going to be intentionally offensive to American troops. American troops right in front of them. There's a context here that we obviously don't see, and I have a pretty good feeling that the situation dictated that it was ok to say that. Hell, culturally, that guy had no idea what he was saying anyway. I've had people from other countries ask me specifically why you cant say... er, "the N word". I mean, some languages don't even have swear words (Japanese for example). I think if you are "seriously pissed off", you should relax. It looked like a lighthearted conversation to me.

- Sawta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This reminds me a lot about how I used to joke with the south americans I worked with at Wendys (A fastfood place, if its not popular in other contries). I would call them madicones(I'm sure its spelled wrong) "Gay" and they would laugh and say "No, you gay amigo!" or point to someone else and we'd all laugh about it. Its essentialy the same thing that was going on in the video, when a bunch of guys sit around and try to talk to each other, while not being able to say much besides a few curse words and basic things like "This is nice" or "Hand me that", it can be much easier to just mimick something that they've seen on televison.

- sovereign3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Coming from a black guy, I don't think he was being racist. I found it quite funny and probably necessary considering the amount of stress they're under. The other two black guys in the video seemed more amused than offended.
One thing I've learned during my time abroad is that many, many people have never directly interacted with Blacks. Therefore the only contact they've had with black people is through TV, movies, music, and video games. These media tend to have a stereotypical and generalized representation of minority groups (for obvious reasons). Therefore, when foreigners encounter Blacks for the first time, this generalized view is all they have for Blacks. It seemed like his humor playing on not just generalized views for Blacks, but for Whites also.

It didn't seem that the black marine was LOLing with the rest of them. The white marines didn't do anything to explain the n-word implications

europeans. I'd like to see how a white person would find it funny if several black colleagues and maybe a Somali soldier or somebody were joking

Obviously you know little of your history because the Arabs enslaved many, many Whites during the 1700 and 1800s. In fact, many abolitionists in the US used the Arab enslavement of Whites as justification for the abolition of slavery. They ruled that it was inhumane to enslave Blacks just as it was inhumane to enslave Blacks.
Further, even in America slaves weren't always exclusively Blacks. Whites served as indentured servants. Also, for a while Native Americans were enslaved. However, the Indians were physically unable to sustain the brutality of slavery and many preferred suicide to enslavement.
The only reason you have the incredibly biased (and in my opinion, racist) sentiment that all slaves came from Africa is because Black Africans were the victim of the largest forced migration in history for the sole purpose of enslavement. - DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yeah they're on the same team...

This is just how guys joke around. Behind closed doors and with inner circles, friends are known to call each other all sorts of racial slurs, even disregarding that persons actual race. It is satirical in nature and is a parody upon the media's culture of hyper political-correctness. It's so taboo it becomes a running gag behind closed doors. It's like saying swears as a 6 year old, so taboo to say "*****" it becomes the in-joke amongst the other gradeschoolers.
