- GutterMoo, on 11/12/2008, -19/+915PNG is better to be honest. JPEG doesn't even do transparency.
- xxacefirexx, on 11/12/2008, -6/+527I feel like a noob because I actually say "P-N-G"
- bionicvskungfu, on 11/12/2008, -12/+508Compression artifacts add character.
- theberlindoctor, on 11/12/2008, -7/+401IE6 is the only reason we arent all using PNG.
- DeathJux, on 11/12/2008, -10/+335Don't worry, there are lots of us. Professionals, even.
This "ping" ***** is *****. - explnx, on 04/27/2009, -3/+293I always made this guttural noise like "pngggh", then ripped out my enemy's heart and ate it.
- Syphon0928, on 11/12/2008, -32/+298I like PNG because it's 1 syllable when pronouncing it as "ping".
- dougmc, on 11/12/2008, -0/+215At least they didn't send you a bmp ...
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -3/+191jpg_vs_png.gif
There i fixed it for you. - MidnightRIder77, on 11/12/2008, -1/+174Or a pdf. I've actually had someone send me a picture in a pdf
- radu79, on 11/12/2008, -5/+164Both have their uses, but I hate when people send uncompressed PNG screenshots or pictures, which take a few MB.
People should learn when to use each format. - jmontes, on 11/12/2008, -9/+156How wrong. It's all about TIFF!
- Phalanxia, on 11/12/2008, -41/+186I thought that was XKCD at first.
How disappointing. - lbrandy, on 11/12/2008, -4/+127Author here...

For context/comments/etc. - DelayedEraser, on 11/12/2008, -0/+116@Midnight:
only once? lucky you. that was the second most common way for stupid clients to send photos at my last job (number one being: embedded in an otherwise empty MS Word document) - goldfenix, on 11/12/2008, -1/+116They all have advantages and disadvantages.
For tiny art on the web, such as logos and whatnot, GIF is usally superior due to it's tiny file size and transparency abilities.
For most photos or moderately complex images, JPG is preferable since it tends to have the best file size.
For images requiring transparency and complex colors, PNG is really the only file type that can handle it at all. Unless you somehow have to deal with the ***** that is known as "Internet Explorer" in which case you just curse a lot. - Rivetgeek, on 11/12/2008, -0/+97I had to work for months to convince my boss to stop sending me pictures in a word document. No text, just an image inside a word document.
- Daniru, on 11/12/2008, -3/+88Nobody loves .gif
- spyker3292, on 11/12/2008, -7/+91Yup, that's the issue with JPEG. Really needs transparency.... PNG FTW
- freshpow, on 11/12/2008, -16/+91The picture is a .png
Big surprise - sexybobo, on 11/12/2008, -3/+76woooooosh
- cyrusuncc, on 11/12/2008, -14/+86animated gifs FTW!
- braveryonions, on 11/12/2008, -1/+71It should be jpg_vs_.png
- JingleHymrShmit, on 11/12/2008, -10/+74Save image as: jpg_vs_png.png
- theOster, on 11/12/2008, -1/+61i'd compose a reply, screenshot it, dump it into word and make it a pdf (you know, so it's "protected") and send it back to him.
- sildude, on 11/12/2008, -1/+61@DelayedEraser
YES the mighty word documents with the embedded images. Gif thumbnails for print work. - mistermaster, on 11/12/2008, -2/+62@Rivetgeek: what did you do? Send him screenshots of Word documents?
- cmsjustin, on 11/12/2008, -3/+62Jpeg works great if you don't overcompress it
- DonJuanAussi, on 11/12/2008, -2/+61Unless you want to archive photos without loss, use the image for film production, want to use the image in a professional print run (I have had trouble with invisible artifacts that show up in white areas of the print job at JPG 100%), or you need accuracy for technical documents...
Jpeg is great, but it's primary use is for low quality high compression image distribution online. - Oxygen, on 11/12/2008, -7/+62I preffer Bitmap.
- dixonHill, on 11/12/2008, -0/+54Whoosh.
- jonathangerlach, on 11/12/2008, -2/+56"Pee Ehn Jii".
And it's "Ess Kyu Ehl". - rockon4life45, on 11/12/2008, -4/+57my favorite post on forums
"your lack of .png disgusts/disturbs me" - vardhaman2249, on 11/12/2008, -1/+52http://xkcd.com/207/
- NotACYBORG, on 11/12/2008, -6/+57Sometimes people go overboard and pronounce every acronym out there. Some acronyms were not meant to sound out.
- freqk, on 11/12/2008, -2/+51Successful troll is successful.
- cmsjustin, on 11/12/2008, -8/+55I always pronounced it pong
- Soniti, on 11/12/2008, -2/+48Oh, that clarifies it nicely.
- tgc1, on 11/12/2008, -1/+47Because ping sounds retarded (or rather is used in networking terminology) I use the term P-N-G too. Why add confusion to an already confusing bunch of technological mumbo-jumbo?
- kayfouroh, on 11/12/2008, -1/+47Sequel?
SEQUEL?
I feel like an ass when I say "S Q L" at my job and everyone says "Sequel". - bullhead2007, on 11/12/2008, -2/+47I've always said P-N-G.
As a computer nerd, PING means something else. As to not confuse to the two, I've always said P N G. - Sakumi, on 11/12/2008, -2/+46Uhm? No...
- dougmc, on 11/12/2008, -1/+45You do realize that he did that intentionally, right?
- keyme, on 11/12/2008, -0/+42I prefer a two dimensional array of bytes, printed on the screen as 1x1 pixel < div >s, using nothing but Javascript and php.
- alexhouse, on 11/13/2008, -1/+42beer.png?
- miralize, on 11/12/2008, -3/+43PNG is superior in so many ways.. Damn that piece of *!&^ that is IE6...
- Beatmiser, on 11/12/2008, -1/+41Count me in as someone who says P-N-G. I never considered another way which is odd because I do say Jpeg.
- DeadOhioSky, on 11/12/2008, -2/+42its just stick figures guys, XKCD doesn't hold the patent...
and if you like the cartoon, why does it matter who made it? - kyle212, on 11/12/2008, -0/+39Notice how one half looks good and the other doesn't Sherlock?
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -6/+45Comics should be funny.
