- dougvfr750, on 05/23/2008, -27/+1039I love the "What Now Bitches?" .... classic
- fallen1004, on 05/23/2008, -14/+632I believe the check reads "0.002 + e^(i pi) + sum 1/2^n (n = 1 to infinity).
e^(i pi) = -1
therefore the actual value written on the check is: 0.002 - 1 + 1 = 0.002 - DaMacGamer, on 05/23/2008, -30/+631Am I a total nerd for figuring out the answer before laughing at the picture?
- WraTH017, on 05/23/2008, -6/+400As of matter of fact, yes, sometimes it is standard procedure.
- archiecstll, on 05/23/2008, -19/+365First: OLD.
Second: fallen1004 is correct, it's e to the i pi, making the sum $0.002. This was some guy's response to the misprint in the verizon ads or bills (don't remember which) stating that individual texts cost 0.20 cents, as opposed to 0.20 dollars, which is what they meant and charged (false advertising?). - JVENEGAS, on 05/23/2008, -15/+341this reminds me of the time i asked a kid what his age was and he wrote out a ***** equation.
- nibster, on 05/23/2008, -4/+264yes.
- ndesantis, on 05/23/2008, -3/+234good work Randall Patrick Munroe
- lowspeedchase, on 05/23/2008, -3/+212Only if you were aroused.
- qber, on 05/23/2008, -0/+205I hope you figured out the correct answer, not the one in the caption.
- HollasTJ, on 05/23/2008, -8/+162A better engineer wouldn't have to pay
- bigbadgoat, on 05/23/2008, -1/+154That's exactly what it's from. We're taught to write a certain way according to standard for blue prints. I'm a computer engineer and I've never gotten out of the habit of something that was taught to me 5 years ago and I've never had a reason to use it since.
My father writes the same way, and he graduated 30 years ago and hasn't held a position as an engineer for over 20 years. - bstockwell, on 05/23/2008, -6/+140Randall Munroe is the XKCD guy, So I'm guessing this got yanked off XKCD somewhere
- romistrub, on 05/23/2008, -2/+133As an engineer in training, I would like to point out that it says e^(i*pi), so not only is the description under the image wrong, I don't think this is from an engineer (engineers use "j").
Of course, because the description is wrong, the entire ***** joke is lost, because e^(j*pi) is -1. So this cheque is for approximately 0.002 dollars. - navster15, on 05/23/2008, -1/+130Is that the same guy that does xkcd?
edit: Yeah it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randall_Munroe - mentallyinhell, on 05/23/2008, -2/+111Does the bank have to work that out? I can see them now calling corporate offices and faxing copies of this to every branch trying to work this one out.
- kue04, on 05/23/2008, -5/+108Try cashing that at a bank.........
- Funkly, on 05/23/2008, -0/+93only had to work for 10 years? what did he do right?
- YodaJones, on 05/23/2008, -2/+92Well before you were even a sperm, people used pens, pencils and paper to write and make technical drawings. Yeah, even before CAD. Our teachers made us develop a writing technique that was legible or we had to do it over. You don't know about these skills because your teachers don't want to hurt your self esteem and make you cry.
- ViciousFishes, on 05/23/2008, -6/+94No, but you are a total nerd for letting us know about it.
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -11/+98Yeah this was posted a few weeks ago as "Never piss off a mathmatician" I swear has the internet ended or something because the same crap keeps being submitted to Digg.
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -4/+73USUALLY YOU LEARN TO DO IT IN DRAFTING CLASS.
SO YOU DONT WIND UP WRITING LIKE A DOCTOR OR LAWYER UNINTELLIGIBLY ! - duggtodeath, on 05/23/2008, -2/+67Sadly, Verizon could claim that the check was unreadable and ask him to issue a new one. Still -- this was awesome. Better revenge would have been to pay your bill entirely in coins.
- Daiken, on 05/23/2008, -2/+66lol, gotta love the guy who did the caption. He must have felt so proud to finally figure out what the value was, only to get it wrong.
- heypetray, on 05/23/2008, -1/+59Am I a nerd for getting pissed at him for spelling it wrong?
Pie??? Come on... - inactive, on 05/23/2008, -0/+56http://xkcd.com/verizon/
- MacEnvy, on 05/23/2008, -3/+55Well, it IS Randall Munroe (of XKCD fame).
- skopje, on 05/23/2008, -8/+59This is ooooooooooooold
Full story -> http://verizonmath.blogspot.com/2006/12/verizon-do ... - yuanzhoulu, on 05/23/2008, -2/+52guy better watch out:
http://dheera.net/projects/blur.php
(which has been dugg before) - unionaire, on 05/23/2008, -1/+45i thought this is more trouble for the bank than verizon...
- Laminarcissus, on 05/23/2008, -10/+53Hi Randall --
What now? Well, the non-violent offender we pay six cigarettes a day to open our bills for us takes the three-tenths-of-a-second look at it he was trained to do, and then throws it into a bin marked "not-processable." It gets sent back to you and we don't credit your account.
Then, thirty days later, a computer shuts off your service for non-payment and dings your credit rating, which is ironic because it probably would have enjoyed the joke.
Love,
Verizon - pauleric, on 05/23/2008, -3/+45I can see them saying it's not filled out in a legally correct manner and charging him a $35.00 bank fee. And Verizon still says he owes them money, maybe sends it to a collection agency and ruins his credit. Kind of makes the "What now bitches?" taunt a little hollow.
...of course, I didn't think too hard about the math, and I see now that even that's wrong, so my comment is completely irrelevant But I'll leave it up so you can all laugh at me. - UtopiaInTheSky, on 05/23/2008, -21/+62I'd say it's more about pissing off a mathematician. As an engineering student, I know math skills are required, but seeing a picture like that doesn't really remind me of engineering as much as it does complex math. Though, of course, any image that has "Have A Nice Day! :)" written at the bottom simply must be Dugg anyway.
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -0/+41http://xkcd.com/verizon/
- Bob042, on 05/23/2008, -5/+46Exactly. First thing I thought was "Oh, it's for $.002 (.2 cents)"
2nd thought: "WTF? $536.49?" - VinnieDaMac, on 05/23/2008, -5/+45This jpg is older than John McCain.
- Birdman3, on 05/23/2008, -1/+41Correct.
What's slightly more unsettling is that whoever wrote it spelled "pi" wrong: "pie." - Freedom4Tibet, on 05/23/2008, -2/+39You would be a total nerd except for the fact that IT'S WRONG hahahahahaha........ dumbass
Here's to the REAL engineer.... - dezmo, on 05/23/2008, -2/+38their are many types of engineers and not all of them use j
- puttly, on 05/23/2008, -0/+35it's called Lettering. We are taught how to write text on blueprints/sketches for clarity.
- aenima987, on 05/23/2008, -4/+39Randall Munroe FTW
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -1/+35its called block letters or print writing idiot.
- davidrools, on 05/23/2008, -1/+32Engineers actually have a caps lock button that sometimes gets stuck.
- ChileanGoD, on 05/24/2008, -0/+29Not all engineers are computer engineers.
- plnegative1, on 05/23/2008, -0/+28That's actually e^( i * pi ) not e^(2 * pi )
- Kenzan, on 05/23/2008, -14/+41Math is hard.
- tdogg241, on 05/23/2008, -0/+26It also prevents others from wasting time trying to decipher chicken-scratch handwriting.
Case in point, the check actually says e^(i*pi), not e^(2*pi). Thus, the check is actually for $0.002. - trevorh, on 05/23/2008, -2/+26Dammit I'm a nerd!
- frankingeneral, on 05/23/2008, -7/+31Dugg for ***** Verizon
