- wearescience, on 10/12/2007, -4/+145He is intentionally making it harder than it could be for effect.
- Anpheus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+122Yeah but _what the ***** is he trying to do scripting Perl with speech recognition?
This language is the end-all be-all of obfuscated syntax in modern languages. (Unless you include esoteric programming languages.) - krasht, on 10/12/2007, -4/+87Maybe someone with no limbs.
- Anpheus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+69Yeah, he should know that "equals" is not the same as "equal sign" and "less than" is not the same as "less than sign."
It looks like Vista's speech recognition actually does a pretty good job. It's just used by an embarassingly novice user at it trying to do something that really should be done on keyboard. - nyx210, on 10/12/2007, -9/+67what kind of person would even think of programming using speech recognition? It would be hundreds of times faster just to do it by hand...
- TKn00b, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53wow that is extremely frustrating to watch.
- noripcord7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51I'm not sure what's worse, trying to code in perl with voice commands or doing all it using Notepad.
I was dying at around 5:00.
"delete would and to the press comma comma delete what a N2 of the loop press comma comma"... - adderx99, on 10/12/2007, -6/+54I was crying with laughter while watching this...
- livetheride, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46Speaker: "Press N"
Vista: "m"
Speaker: "PRESS THE *****' N KEY I'LL KILL YOU." - Jo9100, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37"press caps lock"
just press it yourself - xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32I'm a Mac/Linux fan but to be honest I've never seen any voice recognition software that does any better than that for programming.
- richsipe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30what part of VOICE RECOGNITION are you missing? Yes, pressing the keys would have been MUCH easier, thus the comedy ...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34This is really more about voice recognition products, not about Vista -- but try telling that to a Mac cultist. They'll literally shriek and wet themselves, as you know.
- artofwar420, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I sooo want Vista now. "open firefox, adress bar: digg.com... press enter"
- nyx210, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21None of the ***** as a@like you like your windows.
- wafflez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15>_> it's not all the frustrating to use surprisingly...this guy said the wrong commands like 10 times and he probably didn't train vista with his voice yet..i lol'd anyways.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Honestly, why would you TRY to code using voice recognition.
It's difficult enough for speech recognition programs to grab standard dictation properly. I think this was done just to make fun of Microsoft. Believe it or not, their speech recognition looked pretty good at being able to delete entire phrases easily. It looked like it could end up being very useful for dictating notes, papers, etc. Anything you need to just get your ideas down and then go back and polish later. - merkle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19"open

ugh!

I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at any video on Digg. - evilesttoast, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16its not fake, I've seen this happen
- nyx210, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@krasht: good point
- Sazime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Gah, he over does the flaws for the sake of showing things off. Not using a mute, etc. Not funny. I find this person irritating.
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10When it said ' None of the *****@ like you like your windows' I almost had a heart attack laughing...
- DenTPuzz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11wrong tool for the wrong job
- cptn_cardboard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"oh em gee, that was... delete woes... was... delete woes... was... delete... delete delete woes..." (grabs keyboard)
- johnwc723, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Why would you program using speech recognition? Its designed for opening programs or writing papers/letters....
- romainechester, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Love the file name : "That was easy.TXT"
- SirG3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'd love to be able to program via speech recognition -- there are times that my wrists hurt enough that I am unable to use the mouse... To be able to efficiently do this, you would need to make a speech recognition plugin of sorts, to add the notion of program context -- you'd need to hook up a lexer / analyzer to provide information to the recognition engine as to what to listen for. It'd need to provide variable names, function names, language features (like in Perl, "variable foo" would insert "$foo" or something similar), and in statically typed languages, look for variables/constants that can be used in the current method call, comparison, assignment, etc.
- MagicBobert, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6Would have been funny if:
1) He wasn't trying to program. Who uses speech recognition for programming?
2) He had actually bothered to train it first. All speech recognition programs need some decent training time before you can expect good results.
3) He had realized that it's going to pick up everything you say. If you say "thank you Windows", it's going to write "thank you Windows".
4) He hadn't spoken most of his sentences as mumbled, unintelligible phrases. Of course Windows is going to have one hell of a time figuring out what you said. Garbage in, garbage out. - sup34dog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7WOW, what a ***** tool.
He has no idea how to use it in the first place. What a moron.
(buried as lame) - cyphin6, on 11/08/2007, -1/+6Thats a funny video, I use Speech Recognition every day almost never have problems, this guy is mentally ill and wants his 15 seconds of fame, as being a Dumbass.
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Even I heard him say "Press capital M" maybe he should enunciate.
Plus, if he actually used the interactive tutorial he'd know that you can spell things out and say "N as in Nine" or "N as in Neighborhood" (etc) - JJayUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's not really Microsoft fanboys, though is it? We've seen comments from Mac users going after the guy. The point here is that he's using it to write a Perl script, and the problem here is that people, especially yourself, seem to think Microsoft is trying to show off or, as you said, 'think they can do it all better'. Voice Recognition in Windows is designed to help people who cannot physically type for one reason or another. Yes, it needs improvement but I still think they've come a long way. Maybe in the future Microsoft will enhance it so that you can write Perl scripts or code using your voice, but at the moment they're trying to get it so standard Windows applications can be used and internet access is available to everyone.
You will not be digged down by Microsoft fanboys alone (although, I'm sure there will be some) I assure you. Oh, and OS/2 had better voice recognition 15 years ago? I think, perhaps not. - MadNuke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Don't you mean 'mildly' entertaining?
Who the hell am I kidding, those sentences were fantastic
DELETE AT WINDOW @ OH *****
DELETE DELETE AT WINDOW @ O ***** WINDOWS ***** OH
DELETE WINDOWS O @ ***** A WINDOW a M KILL
You get the gist. - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The funniest thing is that he kept saying "thank you" when it did something right, and the voice typer would print out "thank you/think you", pissing him off, and having him correct it. When it finally corrected and typed the right thing, he'd be so relieved that he'd say "thank you" again. Pure comedy.
- TheElectricMonk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5if you look around a bit youll come across another video of a guy with a british accent working the voice recognition much better, maybe it works best with real english
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's not faked, but the screw-ups are mostly deliberate. You have to spend a good amount of time training Vista to recognize your voice. Then you have to take like, 2 seconds training yourself to realize that Vista is listening to EVERYTHING you say. You also might want to make sure your microphone is at a reasonable level so it's not distorting your voice. That could be the root of his M/N problem. It could also be his failure to speak clearly. All in all, until I can speak casually and have something recognize every word I say with impeccable accuracy, using speech recognition when I don't have to (i.e. disability) is just not a very good option.
- reflux83, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I COULD NOT BREATH watching this. It was Hilarious!
- Suchmann, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6that was wildly entertaining
- zoomtechtv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When using speech recognition. The first thing that you have to do is train it. It usually takes about 10 or 20 minutes to train Dragon NaturallySpeaking when I tried Microsoft's version of speech recognition. It wasn't all that bad, every person that uses speech recognition. Just has to take the time to train their own voice.
This posting was completely written in Dragon NaturallySpeaking. - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3while that was ***** hilarious, i think it actually shows the power of the voice recognition in vista. Obviously you wouldnt use it for coding, but that looked really good for general windows commands and perhaps even typing urls and IMs.
- mirek, on 11/08/2007, -4/+7This was not funny at all, just frustrating watching this moron.. he deserves a punch in the mouth.
digg me down. - motters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hillarious, but this is a straw man. I don't think speech recognition is yet intended for use by programmers. It's meant for writing letters or emails in ordinary english.
- Rkstar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's probably not fake... but it is weird how every once in a while the command shows up on screen before he finishes saying it.
- Dunnix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, actually I was impressed with the speech reco here... If a normal human being was using it and not a guy tryin to make the software look bad, it would have worked very well.
fanboys will be fanboys - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2stupid thanks the computer when it finally does something right, and cusses it out when it prints "thank you".
- 3dom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sirg3: yea definitely, I've thought for a while that the main problem with voice recognition software is it tries to recognise literally everything in the English language. If you could define what kind of special interest or context you are going to be talking about beforehand it would make everyones lives a lot easier. Note: I dont use vista so if this is actually possible then feel free to digg me down
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This guy obviously didn't use the interactive tutorial.
Other than failing to follow strange syntax of code (when compared to the syntax English), I think Vista did fantastically. - alanrice38181, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ok, I do not disagree that the speech recognition needs a bit more work, as do all current on the market that I have tried, but he is just trying to make it worse not only by talking to himself (for God sake it's SPEECH recognition!) and then not pronouncing words clearly and rushing through sentence when he gets "annoyed".
At 4:07 he says M not N, for sure. High up the volume and listen. I noticed it straight off. - CocaCola88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2isnt it press shift i? just wondering
- zimick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The video is funny. Why is everyone pointing out that he is writing a Perl script? So what? Sure, it is not ideal for voice recognition. Anyone with common sense can figure that out. The humor is in the guy getting so incredibly frustrated with it while trying to code a Perl script with voice recognition. Take it for what it is worth... comedic.
