- discoloda, on 10/12/2007, -7/+120he now sits in a much higher notch in my book
- InsomniaSlim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+66Once again, a wonderful, clear, straight forward look at an event. Why is it that a satire show on a cable comedy channel gets more respect from me than a news channel?
- kenthorvath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+64"Uh, who ***** cares? That was 5 years ago. "
Before anyone else rips you a new one, I'd like to point out that this is unmistakably the ranting of an immature mind. One day, I hope, you will grow up and learn to consider the way that others feel, and then you will understand exactly who cares, and you will, too. - lowandgrin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51I remember watching this back then, watching him on the verge of tears and actually feeling his emotions as compared to anything that any other "news" anchor said... one of most memorable post-disaster moments for me... it was just incredibly heartfelt...
- ChoKoth, on 10/12/2007, -6/+56"Jon Stewart Post 9/11 Speech" What, exactly did you come in expecting?
I'm really bored with people olding "Dupe" or "Old" or "this was on slashdot two days ago!" Just so they can be part of the conversation....just reply with "Me too!" and be done with it, that way there's no question that you're just trolling. - TheFunny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46Always a class act IMHO
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Sorry about the double, here's the full episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfO-Z1CuJ6w&search=jon%20stewart%20september
- kjm16, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39Conservatives, Liberals, and everyone in between were effected. You cannot deny that. Just think back to how you felt back then.
- drewpost, on 10/12/2007, -10/+43That was amazing. That got my crying all over again b/c everything I felt those days just came rushing back. It also gives you a perspective on just how far we've fallen since then due to incapable leadership. Bush had national unity handed to him and he has ***** it up so bad, I just can only hope that someday we can get back to that level without a national tragedy such as 9/11
- definiteform, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Well I saw this when it was broadcasted in 2001; I still have the entire show on my PC. I love watching it because, the clips are funny, but his speech is powerful. I don't think that he could be bashed, in this instance, for pouring himself out for approximately 9 minutes.
- adam84a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Nice, especially if you saw Bill Maher's comments following the event (why he no longer has a show on network television). This brings back memories of a more united America where democrat and republican didn't matter for a short period of time. It really is sad to see how petty things have gotten in less than five years from this.
- bigrobert327, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36Jon Stewart for president 2012
- madmage, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31Or 2008.
- Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26It's clearly not bravery on the same level as giving up your life, but your point is refuted by the number of people talking about how much this speech touched them. He performed a job helping his thousands of viewers help come to terms with the trauma done to all of them that day, at significant cost to himself as you can see when you watch it. He didn't have to do it and many would have shied away from it, if put in his position.
He looked evil in the eye and said what needed to be said, did what needed to be done. Fits my definition of bravery. - eigh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24wow. the earliest i remember seeing him is being some anchor on MTV on spring break or something, and now he does this. even though night after night i just think of him as a comedian it still makes my jaw drop everytime i see him go on crossfire, make this kind of a speech or direct his efforts towards something non comical. it leaves me with awe in how great he is.
- Pacotheparrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Amazing. Simply amazing. I think that was probably one of the best responses to the attack that I've ever seen.
- Porkape, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I like Jon Stewart as much as I despise Howard Stern. He was on live when 9/11 happened and never went off air during the entire time and the days that followed as most of the talk shows around the country did and came back with similar speeches (Letterman holding hands with Dan Rather and crying). I wonder how the TV talk shows would have been were they on the whole time, Stern definitely managed to do a decent job even though some of his comments were outright racist. Someone should find his 9/11 show and put a link to it.
- Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23The "treasonous media"? Did you come up with that one all by yourself? Oh no, of course not, it's the latest meme that's been fed to you drones by your media and governmental overlords. How does it feel to be someone else's mouthpiece? Did it hurt when you had your free will and freedom of thought surgically removed?
You accuse him of faking his tears for self gain? That's truly dispicable, the most disgusting thing I've read today. You are free to disagree with his politics, but to cast that slur on him makes you every bit as shameful and heartless as the "9/11 was a government conspiracy" crew.
News as entertainment is everywhere on American television. He is worthy of your respect because he is one of the few people honest enough to openly admit that. - pandapoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Have some respect for the families who lost the ones they love
- Tombs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17"It is a speech given from the very heart that can move even the strongest of man." - Unknown
This is how this clip made me feel. I should have listened to myself and not watched it at work though for right now I feel almost choked up. - SoberEmu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17"Its a great speech but it does not belong on digg, especially years after the event."
493+ people seem to disagree with you. I don't get why people often make these comments, "it doesn't belong on digg". WE decide what goes on digg, so everything that makes the front page DOES belong on digg. - magebomb11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17you can post anything you'd like.
are you getting some sort of error message? - pats1237, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I take him a lot more seriously than Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hanitty, Ann Coulter, Michael Savage, and Rush Limbaugh
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17It was really beautiful actually. "And know what you can see from the South Side of Manhattan is the Statue of Liberty, it doesn't get any better than that".
- Eptiger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yeah, it's really old, but I think I can appreciate it more now more than ever. Now we have a little more perspective on 9/11, and I've grown to appreciate Jon Stewart more over the past years so I'm glad that I actually go to see this clip because I was not watching the Daily Show that year.
- pandapoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I think it's because it's not their job to show compassion, who believes the news for emotion, you expect it
- madmage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11His show has actually won seven Emmys and two Peabodys since he joined the show in 1999.
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Agreed, I hadn't ever seen this, I just thought that Jon Stewart was a funny guy who didn't like republicans, but he's much more. I would love to see this whole episode. wish I could find it.
- jefffm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Just because we disagree with our president doesn't mean we can't still be united as a people. We could all just learn to "agree to disagree", but I guess that wouldn't be any fun, would it...?
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I can't believe I am defending Howard Stern, but it is good to not break with what you normally do in order to keep people from panic. Example, if you were in New York at that time and every show went off the air, every radio program went off the air and such, it would make you feel a lot more like panicking than if everyone reported the event and moved on. I can't believe I defended Howard Stern, I hate that guy.
Eric Wilson - magebomb11, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13truly powerful was when he said 'you know what the view is now? the statue of liberty. and you can't beat that'
***** beautifully said. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9agreed
Rizmaster, at your age it's better to be seen and not heard. - brok3nti3s, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I remember watching this the night it aired and seriously feeling the emotion through the television screen. It was probably the only time I had felt that way throughout the 9/11 coverage as far as a television anchor is concerned. It was raw and real, something that is lacking a lot today is most media coverage. Hats off to Jon Stewart for this, I think he is definitely a person that our generation should look up to and take advice from.
- alphacorvus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@ Nodren: "I'm glad we went to war over 9/11, and i'm glad those responsible will be caught and will see justice for what they did."
You do realize that our reason for invading Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11? And that Iraq had no involvement in 9/11?
Just some small details, right? - spkaine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@MerlynXLII
There are thousands of links posted every single day, if you don't like clips of the Daily Show, don't click on them.
BETTER YET: Don't leave a comment.
Go ahead now, go. - da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9or 2004 if we can get enough lawyers
- da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I remember watching this live, after sitting at the T.V watching CNN steady and other networks, Then being able to turn on the daily show after all of the confussion and anger and sadness and really for the first time sit and listen. I mean you watch this news and you see all of these things but it's almost like your not there your just absorbing information, then watching jon that night someone I go to, to make me laugh about the things that in other situations annoy me or confuss me, and to just see him so shaken up it just woke me up, we've all been there in those situation on the verge of tears, but instead of making us afaird his tears gave us hope, they told us that we would pull threw, we would rebuild, and we would laugh again.
Truely a great man who always knows what to say and how to say it - CoyoteByte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8okay... that got me blubbering... i'm such a baby
- audi100quattro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Can someone find a link to Bill Maher's comments? Was that on Politically Incorrect?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Whatever barriers we but up are gone.. even if it's just momentary."
Unfortunately, it really was momentary. *sigh* - subversive1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@Rizmaster
It's that exact apathetic attitude that undermines this country.Sniveling, spoiled pricks like you are the bane of our society.I understand that is your right under the Constitution to whine & bitch that it was "5 years ago",but that doesn't make it right.Do you think that the veterans who fought and died, lost limbs, were in POW camps, etc for your rights sit back and say "The war happened blah blah years ago,get over it"?No they don't.They made a huge sacrifice and godamnit you should respect them and the innocent people who died on September 11,2001.As you sit back and type your fecal thoughts on these boards you best understand why you have the privilege to do so.I also want you to think of all the families that were affected that day, they don't say"It was 5 years ago,I am over it".One day there will be a deafening sound overheard throughout the planet,it will set off seismometers, sirens,Defcon 5 will activate. The reason being it will be the sound of you pulling your head out of your ass! - answer42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Wow, I liked Stewart before, but that was so moving and heartfelt. Amazing
- adam84a, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@Crass22
no, I agree that the president has done things that have had a negative impact on national bi-partisan unity, but I was just saying that lazily throwing blame back and forth and using inflamatory and immature language does not help any. - Suplyndmnd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@Tombs
I wish I could have given you 100 diggs. great quote and very true. I am the typical mans man who cries for nothing but that had me close. I've respected Jon for a very long time and remember that show. I looked for that show purposely after 9/11. Jon beats anyone else reporting news, hands down. With all the crap that goes on in our country, it's easier to take with a serving of humor. Jon gives us that every night, without fail, and actually goes at people instead of lobbing softball questions.
+1 Digg for the video
+1 Digg for Jon Stewart - pandapoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My Respect for Jon Stuart has grown and grown over the last few minutes - he's obviously an intelignet guy
- Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You're mainstream because you follow a hardcore Republican apologist line that would rather serve the government than the people of your country? You're mainstream because you happily attack your country's constitution by parroting lines fed to you by the marketing guys working for your favoured party? You're mainstream because your party won 1% more of the vote than your opposition? You're mainstream because you view politics as a matter of party versus party rather than "what benefits the electorate"?
You're not mainstream, you're just deluded. - MikeEFresh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5http://isohunt.com/dl.php?id=10128411
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He is a few notches higher in my book as well. And he is already pretty high up.
The air is thin up there. - budderfly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Jon Stewarts has that humility and respect you don't always find on television. Even if this video is old, it reminds me of how epic a day 9/11 was and how so many people became heros.
Awe, I'm all choked up now. :( - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's so depressing that we went from universal eloquance like this that was shared by so many celebrities and others shortly after the attacks and the world sentiment of "we all today are USA" (seen on a sign carried by french citizens in a vigil shortly after the attacks) to the situation we're in today where we are loathed and scorned and seen not as the victims of 9/11 but the instigators of all the trouble that came after it. And when the majority of the public things Saddam was the one that attacked us and that we're in Iraq because they blew up the trade center buildings, one can't be surprised.
It's so depressing to have the support of the world and to have completely squandered the power which comes from that within so few months. We lost a great opportunity there. -
