    No, this is irony. Oxymoron are phrases that combine two words that are often considered contradictory, as in "Military Intelligence," "Jumbo Shrimp," or "Microsoft Works."

    EDIT: I'm still happy to see that someone uses irony correctly.

  • acetv, on 11/21/2008, -7/+32Are you guys seriously smoking something? It's not photoshopped. The sign is hanging on the building nearest the camera on its roof thing that hangs over the concrete. The building in the back, which is actually across the street or whatever, has nothing to do with this sign. You can even see the ends of the lights attached to this overhanging roof just below the sign.

    Any other time you get two things going together that are contradictory (e.g. Sarah Palin and a master's degree), that's a paradox.

    This sign is neither. It just about qualifies as irony.

    That is irony.

    I hate that people alway say "yeah well that's not irony, duh", to ANYTHING that claims to be. It doesn't make you look smart, it doesn't make you cool, it just makes you look smug. And dumb, at the same time, if you're wrong.

    It would be ironic if the sign posted about the missing child somehow caused the child to go missing. What you saw was a coincidence.

  • Harabeck, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5Nope, Jumbo Shrimp is an oxymoron. Its true that in context the definition of "shrimp" is a type of seafood, but the other definition (something small) does exist, so is still considered an oxymoron. In fact, it is the most common example used by texts.

    But keep in mind, as lolwutpear pointed out, connotations should not be used in defining an oxymoron.
