High-speed hamster watch!
youtube.com — Apparently someone attached a speedometer to their furry friend's wheel to find out just how fast their four-legged pet could sprint. The little fella gets the speed count pretty high before the wheel gets the best of him and spins him around TWELVE times. I haven't laughed this hard at a hamster in, well, ever...

- JeremySeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3man they're really tearing it up, but the whole speedometer leadup is a let down; How fast was he going?..twelve spins?
- JeremySeth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+58Ok, this was buggin me, so..
Im guessing the wheel is six inches across, Tic is running full steam and stops dead letting inertia and the wheel take him away at pretty much the speed he was travelling. He clamps down at 0:31 seconds and makes twelve loops before being thrown off at 0:35. So that makes his speed:
(0.000152 km * pi * 12) / 0.00111111111 hours
= 5.15 km/h or, way faster than you could run if you were 3 inches tall.
I for one welcome our speedy, fuzzy overloards. - deacont23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5From the video description: "Look at that! one of my hamsters breaks his speed record and can not slow down any more!!! To get the hamsters' speed : divide the speed written by ten, then you will have it in km/h. ... (more) "
So thats 6.6km/h according to the poster. - Wildthing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"= 5.15 km/h or, way faster than you could run if you were 3 inches tall. "
3.20 mph for for the Yanks - Anpheus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Your estimate doesn't work because during that time drag will slow down the wheel.
- jpopesku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Jeremy got me thinking:
The hamster: 4-5 inches long according to Petco and runs at 5.15 kph based on Jeremy's estimate.
Cheetah: 45-55 inches long and runs at 112 kph (top speed reported)
Michael Johnson: 73 inches tall and set the World Record at 37.08 kph as the fastest human. To make this reasonable (because cheetah and hamster sizes are determined by head + body), I'm assuming Mr. Johnson's legs are half of his total height. Thus will assume his "height" to be 36.5 inches.
Hamster: 5.15 kph / 4.5 inches = 1.14 kph/inch (1.47 kph/inch if we go with 6.6 kph)
Cheetah: 114 kph / 50 inches = 2.28 kph/inch
Human: 37.08 kph / 36.5 inches = 1.02 kph/inch
Damn fast hamster.
(I could've fixed up the units, but I don't care that much -- I was interested in the comparison).

Cheetah size from Wikipedia. - SakisRakis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What deacont23 said, except it actually capped out at 6.8 km/h.
- JeremySeth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+58Ok, this was buggin me, so..
- RichardF12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0he was goin like 64 something at some point.
- DoctaStooge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Fastest I saw was 68, so if you divide by 10 like in the description, he was going at 6.9 km/h. That's equivalent to 4.3 mph if you go by the rate of 1km/h = 0.621371192 mph
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26This video is NSFW in that you'll probably bust out laughing at your desk and alert everyone to the fact that you're a slacker.
That is one freaking hilarious video.- snlildude87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2In that case, here's a SFW version: http://nerdnirvana.org/2006/05/24/hyper-hamster-spins-out-of-control/
SFW because this one spins less but spins nonetheless.

- Dotcommer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those who dont use km/h
in miles per our it is roughly 4mph (rounded up). Fast little guy!
=Edit=
everyone beat me to it. I fail at the internets. I am sorry. =(- wakachamo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We know how you feel. >:
- Devroush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My hamster was one lazy ***** =(
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A hedgehog would trash that speed. I'm not making Sonic jokes either, get yourself an hedgie and see what it does to the wheel. Ours runs so fast the bost that holds the weel to the frame comes off if it isn't overtightened.
It's surprising, they look like such dumpy animals until they've got their legs outstretched.- ATH025, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I didn't think an article about a hamster could turn into a "___ is sooooo much better" argument.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You've never owned a hedgehog ;). Is there some other way a conversation about a hamster that runs in his wheel is going to be interesting?

- Stewage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hamster1: Hey lets go for a run!
Hamster2: Ok!
Hamster1: Alright, I'll start running then you come in behind me and bury your face in my ass while I
repeatedly kick you in the face.
Hamster2: Sure! - Ferneaux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds much better with the Benny Hill theme song playing in the background.... especially since it hit the "circus music" part right before the little guy starts going into the rolls. LMAO
- Ferneaux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here.... I substituted the music with the Benny Hill for those who don't know what I'm talking about.
