- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26People think they are a clever hacker by watching those web cams. Until you do a bit of googling and you realize those are all public cams linked on a web site some places spexially for the purpose of people clicking and watching it, just like a blogs. You're not spying anything, the cam was put there for public viewing.

- cplkai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I like how they cover the story just to end it with "Uh.. use a password and you're UNHAXABLE"
- honkaform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Haha. I skipped ahead to page 8 to avoid diggeffected cameras, and found a world trade center one: Failed to connect?? What?!
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9did he just say 'voy yours'?
- jmhacc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7step 1. Load your camera viewers activeX control with a trojan
step 2. Post it on the interent without a password
step 3. ???
step 4. Profit - RomeyRome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Default password for these is root/pass.
- spliffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5no, because we are "casing" them so we can rob them later.
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6known issue, has been since these cameras were first released, many years ago..
moral of the story? set a password.. - cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://64.21.226.243/view/index.shtml
Im just waiting for a burglar to fall through the ceiling :) - TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I actually stumbled on a Vegas Casino cam watching several part of the inside. Prob not the best thing to be able to have access to see..
- Jams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Its called geocamming and it's nothing new.. hackaday ran an article about it last year. This falls under googlehacks..
- rkuchiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Perhaps, until you posted it on digg. :P

- 5hinmyoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4why would they be scaring people with the prospect of 'hackable' cams after they scared everybody into putting up surveillance cams everywhere for your security? doesnt make sense, now, does it.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4and someone already went in a defaced it with "digg rules"......classy guys
- jprichard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Found the camera that was shown in the video...

Click on 8 and it will show the same thing as the intro to the fox video. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wonder if these "web-cams" can be used to purvey sexual content...if so, it could very well spell the end of the Internets.
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The motherlode!

I somehow doubt this cam is for "public viewing"

I'm gonna have nightmares after that one. - harmonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's because they're the "***** from fox"
- TheIconoclast31, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Some of the quotes from this story are too good:
"Point. Click. Paranoia!"
"A simple pan? That's his bedroom. A simple tilt? His flip flops."
OMFG Not the flip flops!! - omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's such a trippy feeling to be looking at various small corners of the world like this. One second, a street corner in Switzerland, then a Japanese train station, then a bedroom, then some warehouse...kinda cool.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On 2006-11-24 07:41 the cashier was playing Solitaire on his computer next to cash registers. ROFL
- scottschiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I could swear this was pretty big in 2000-2001 when these AXIS cameras really started getting out there, though being quite expensive ($600?) .. the lack of security may be compared to leaving wireless routers with the web interface open, and default passwords set. I think things have improved at least somewhat since then.
This reminds me of something relatedly-nerdy I did in this area.
Mostly out of boredom (and nerdiness around that time, while I was still in school) I tried setting up a camera (capture card + camcorder) which was mounted on a "lazy susan" with a stepper motor in our living room (a house of mostly electronics engineers, go figure.) I'd wired some lights and a tornado vortex generator (heh) to a solid-state relay controlled via the parallel port on our web server, so viewers could look around our place and also turn things on and off via the web. It was interesting given the spread of tech used (hard/software) to get the job done, pretty fun.
I eventually had to take the thing down when one of my less-technical roommates freaked out, saying that a camera had followed him into the kitchen when he went to make a sandwich. ;)
/nerd rant - harmonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oh rofl, I wonder who sleeps in that bed?
Hahaha, I'm having a battle for control on this one, i'm trying to get it to go to the right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Old as the sun.
Also all of those are public camera's...
 Fox scaremongering. - Ryanxv1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2May be old, but still great stuff =]. Awesome to see what people are up to.

OMG teh hax! - spinchange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ ufia....While a great many of course are, not all the IP based cameras that one can find online are intended for public viewing. Bad security and IP Network Administration can cause this stuff to be unintentionally wide open and even indexed by search bots.
- drewgots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i found some sleepy dogs
oh and this one has SOUND so i wanna check it out later when they're not asleep (during the daytime) so i can hear them yap at whoever owns the flip flops (yes, flip flops caught on camera yet again)

This one gave me a cool idea, looks like I got something to work on this weekend! - scottschiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love how the "bad guy" music plays for a lot of the camera scenes. Unauthorised entry! Showing the URL used on TV! OMG, flip-flop-viewing camera terrorists!
Nothing like a little ol' FUD to shake up those parents who are now perhaps wondering if buying their teenage kids that camera last Christmas wasn't such a great idea. ;)
