- Supafly, on 10/12/2007, -12/+81The stupid ***** in the second car! Her damn baby was in the backseat man! How irresponsible and unfitting was this parent!?
- mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+72The first car definitely knew they were there. He even backed up so he could get behind a bus so he could get past them. The second one looks like they were just following behind the bus.
- stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+68The black car knew it was coming. Did you see it accelerate over the crosswalk to try and beat the system?
Flat out deserved it. - cattar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+63Wasn't the father driving? (driver on the right in england) Unless you're calling the father a *****, which could be a fitting word for such a stupid act.
- jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -3/+62"there should be a red light there"
Looks like it's clearly marked, judging by the first frame in the video. - dpl_, on 10/12/2007, -8/+59They need to bring those things over here.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -9/+55This is in London.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+68This is dangerous, did you see how hard that SUV hit? There should be a red light there.
- xbudex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37wouldn't be a problem on a motorcycle :D
- Phatt138, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39Supafly - not to mention the -stroller- and handful of adults that he almost ran over doing it! They were about to step out into the crosswalk because they expected her to stop. The guy endangered ~7 lives, 2 of them children.
If I had my way, people like that would lose their license for years -and- pay a hefty fine! - livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -9/+46People in America would sue.
... at any given chance - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36when the last vehicle hit the poles you can see the drivers head hit the windshield and shatter it.
- cattar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34I think that first little gray car could have fit through to the side (the right side, from the perspective of the camera).
- copperhead, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Remember which side the steering wheel is on in London, then figure out who the idiot was.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Might it be this same video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvZu_qzZmIo&NR ??
- stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36I don't know the etiquette of cross walks in England, but here in Canada we wait for people to cross when they are at them.
Karma is your friend. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Sadly you don't need a license to procreate. :-(
- layzie1989, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28I was hoping the poles would keep going up and lift the car.
- xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29To speed like that (yes, they weren't just driving, they were speeding to sneak in) with a baby in the back is a crime. The couple should have their right to lead an adult life suspended.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32@ jwyles
That is the same video. Thanks!
@schroeder
"Why does everyone insist on a google video/youtube link"
Because I dont have windows codecs and I hate starting up VM just to watch a movie (thankfully it was already up this time). And its not just windows codecs either, there are plenty of codecs out there that dont play on certain systems. youtube and google video can play on just about anything.
and you can download off of google video which is why I like it :-D - xSTALLiONx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24"The US is in the BOTTOM half of lawsuits per capita for western countries."
Link to your source? + I doubt their in the bottom half for Frivolous lawsuits - cduquette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I watched this video a bunch of times, and yea this is clearly marked. There are giant signs at the before you come across the barriers. These aren't road signs either, they're backlit and look like they're very bright. They're also far enough from the road so that if you were behind a bus you'd see them.
This may be an engineering failure because it doesn't prevent injuries from happening, but before this, people were speeding through the bus zone and hitting and killing pedestrians. This system is probably an improvement :P. It's their fault if they can't read the signs. It's like going the wrong way in the parking lots with spike strips... It's your own fault if you try to do it. - adamfive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass -- Tijuana Taxi
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24"Why does everyone insist on a google video/youtube link? This is just another video site, what's wrong with that? I could understand if it was a youtube link on a blog."
Because google video/youtube just *work*. I don't have to choose a preference or install some stupid codec, I just go to the site and watch the video. I also don't have to worry about google or youtube trying any snakey ***** in the background. - agwyllie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20As far as I can tell, all the vehicles that hit the poles did so knowing exactly what it was. You can see them accelerating to try and get through in time, just for a quick shortcut through a semi-pedestrianised area.
I guess what I'm trying to say is: it's their own fault. - Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18No, it's fricking Manchester as stated. I'm a few blocks from there now.
Plus, is is a safe system. You have a remote sensor in your car/cab whatever that lowers the poles. If you haven't got one, you don't get into the padestrian area.
Which is what it is protecting. - greghunt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I don't know about the US of A, but in England when learning to drive you're taught about "tyres and tarmac"; you should always be able to see some of the road behind the vehicle in front (and usually its tyres). Any safe driver that accidently followed the bus should be able to stop in time. Driving bumper to bumper isn't safe, and plus being behind a huge bus that has limited vision I'd want to be extra careful.
The UK is full of idiot drivers who think they're smart-arses. - Siroro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Actually - this is Manchester
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=411423&in_page_id=1770 - evilpig, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Um, Break.com allows you to use their flash player...
- ryanfelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Yea, you can see the sign in the beginning of the video...
the HUGE red light, and probably saying "Bus Only" too... - Snuffkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17@stylerm
This has nothing to do with crosswalks, it's a bus lane. - ez12a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17The black car saw it. it hesitated a bit cause of the peds (and the baby carriage), but then it sped up because the driver noticed the poles rising. I'm sure those 2ft long signs were blinking after the bus went through. silly SUV.
anyway, the poles hooked just behind the bumper and the airbags deployed therefore his speed at approaching the barrier was around 15 mph. - bolero421, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17"Some drunk cowboys in a dualie would rip those ***** up in a heartbeat."
And we are supposed to be proud of this?
That pass-through was planned and built for the express purpose of allowing the area's public transport to function more efficiently. The plan was probably proposed and voted on in a city council or possibly by the citizens themselves (I'm not very knowledgeable as to the working of the British local government system). The people seen in this video and others like them are selfish and seem to think they are not bound by the same rules as the rest of the populace. How is this any different from parking in front of a fire hydrant and then having your car impounded? What if one of those cars had hit a pedestrian?
Breaking the law is breaking the law. Civil rights are not being violated here, it's a farking pedestrian walk-through and bus stop, not the autobahn. Get over yourself. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Probably an RFID tag or something.
- Zuhaib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I am with stylerm, the 2nd one very much knew what was coming because you can see him gun it right as the bus passes. If he was moving much slower he would not have been as hurt as you see in the video. Would have had the damage car #1.
While it might be a dumb idea about the whole road limiting car crap (The UK does that alot from what i hear), the system that use is not any different then those heavy bars that are used at some security check points or the tire razors used to prevent people from going the other way of traffic at some garages.
Even as an American the first time i saw that, you know that sign means do not enter wrong way. - pritch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13To the people saying "This is dangerous" and whatnot, I've seen these things in a couple of places and:
1. They're always well signposted to warn you that they're there
2. The sort of people trying to get across are probably the sort of people who'd do exactly the same thing at a red light on a busy junction as well. Which is more dangerous - hitting a pole, or hitting another vehicle or even a pedestrian? - Cojawfee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I'd like to see them try. There was a video here a few weeks ago showing a truck driving full speed into one of these things with no damage and still worked perfectly.
These aren't just unsuspecting people getting their cars destroyed for no reasons. It is clearly marked that they aren't allowed to go through. They are just jackasses who think they can cheat the system. - gravis86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@ choicetoes:
That's no cheesefactory band, it's Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass with "Tijuana Taxi" - megagram, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16This is absolutely crazy! To those people saying it should be clearly marked, look at the first few seconds of the clip: There are brightly flashing DO NOT ENTER signs clearly marking it. And to those people saying the people driving were simply blindly following the other vehicles, watch again. You can see how they are accelerating hard and keep as close to the leading vehicle as possible. It seems that they all know what they are trying to do.
Just for laughs, for those who didn't notice already, watch again and take note of the last two vehicles. The impact causes their wipers to go on full blast!
The airbag deployment and head impact are pretty dramatic too.
Stupid drivers. - Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@schroeder:
I don't know about anyone else, but personally, I like when people post YouTube links since I use YouTube's "favorites" feature a lot. - itsmekirby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@carapi
As much as you sound convinced and therefore emotionally convincing, nobody will truly believe you without a good source. Your comment doesn't have much merit without one. - belfastbiker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14"I don't think these people were trying to sneak in behind the buses."
Jesus Christ on a stick, YES, of course they were.
"Also, what about pedestrians or bicyclists? Jesus, what a disaster."
It's designed to make life easier for those groups beyond the barrier. You knew that, right? Besides I'm sure cyclists and pedestrians would see the HUGE ***** SIGN and not try and run into these at full whack.
This is a monumentally brilliant idea. They could sell the videos for extra income too. In fact, they should have a 50" screen at the side of the road playing the 2 or 3 seconds of the black car hitting the barrier, on a loop.
Just for ***** and giggles. - aidanpryde18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It is a bus lane, they shouldn't have been in that lane to begin with, also, they were using excessive speed in a heavily-pedestrian area.
I was reading the comments section for this on the Manchester Nightly News, and one comment that struck me as quite true was "What if that bollard had been a little girl" Would we be saying that little girl's family deserves to pay the damage to those people's car.
I also read that in addition to the huge neon signs, the road is marked that there is no entrance, and there is a robotic voice warning that the bollards are being raised and lowered. If that isn't enough warning, then I don't know what is.
Maybe they should just play this video on the back of the buses when they get ready to go through the bollards. - milarepa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13the government did not "***** up" their car. their recklessness and general stupidity were the primary causes, the way I see it.
and no drunk cowboy could "rip those ***** up." cue dodge truck music "they're solid like a rock." - noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Every single one of those people deserved it. Watching these incompetant, selfish, plain UNSAFE drivers get exactly what they deserve felt so good, I just about crapped myself.
- newsninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10All of the drivers shown in the video are clearly trying to beat the system. The small silver car backs off and waits for a bus to pass before tailgating it. The driver of the black Toyota 4x4 clearly knows what is going to happen and accelerates in the hope that the bollards will see he is approaching and lower again (a la elevator/lift doors). The man in the white Iveco van was evidently holding back, waiting for an authorised vehicle to lower the bollards before tailgating. All of them thought the rules didn't apply to them — they all deserved what they got.
I think this is an excellent example of natural selection. If you're moronic enough to ignore the massive, flashing signs, the clearly marked signs on the road, hold back and tailgate an authorised vehicle or even accelerate at the sight of the raising bollards, you deserve a bit of whiplash and a trashed car. If said idiot has a passenger in the car, that's their responsibility — it's no different to crashing into the side of a building.
The bollards in question are made by a company called Urbaco (www.urbaco.co.uk), by the way. They are pretty damn resiliant, and I can't see someone with a pickaxe coming along and ripping them out anytime soon!
P.S. For cripes sake, there is more than one city in the UK. Only ~7 million of the 60+ million British residents live in Greater London. - Animal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I would imagine there is a sign, the way these people tried to speed through very close behind the authorized vehicles is a pretty strong indication of their intent.
As for the posts knowing when the vehicle passes, probably some kind of infrared system. The parking lot I use for work has an exit gate that goes up as you approach and will stay open until you pass and then close behind you. Same idea I suppose. - mystere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Geez people, it wasn't the woman driving. It's england, and the driver is on the right hand side of the car (look closely, you can see the air bag deploy on the steering wheel). It's a man driving.
- webphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@vuzman: here is the video of the truck http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7032957814174795479&q=truck+pole
