They want us to kill ourselves. You go out to Beverly Hills, you don't see that *****. They want to us to kill ourselves. The best way to destroy a people is to take away their ability to reproduce. Who is it that's dying out here on these streets every night? Y'all. - Yeah. - Young brothers like yourselves. What am I supposed to do? Fool roll up, try to smoke me?   • PunkRockGeoff, on 04/01/2008, -1/+2The saddest thing is this is in general almost true. Gentrification in this day and age sucks. At least in Baltimore, it's about wealthy real estate developers(aided by the city and eminent domain) deciding a working class (usually white, don't want them pesky colored folks about) neighborhood is undervalued, then deciding to buy it all and price the locals out. It's dirty pool. The local government helps the real developers. Wages haven't gone up much past inflation in the last 10 years but rent has tripled everywhere?(granted I'm not factoring inflation in to rent costs but still..) There aren't triple the people in the city. Last time I checked the city is still losing population.

  • redfan, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Eh, I dunno, for The Onion, I didn't think it was _that_ funny. I assume the point is to make fun of people who complain about gentrification in the cities. Or maybe the gentrifiers themselves...
    Living in Chicago, I did get a kick out of the Wicker Park bit. People always complain about how "it used to be way better before the yuppies moved in" and all.
